It’s a blessing to serve the Guests of Allah

11 July 2013 - 02 Ramadan 1434 H

MAKKAH – Sheikh Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, Head of the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, made late Tuesday night an inspection tour of the ongoing expansion work at the Grand Mosque.

Speaking to reporters, he said that serving the holy mosques and the pilgrims as well as extending to them the best possible facilities is a great blessing from Allah Almighty to this great nation, its leaders and people.

“We are honored by the order and directive of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to open the ground floor, first floor and the first mezzanine of the annex of the Grand Mosque and its outer squares. We are also witnessing the unprecedented progress in the expansion of the mataf (circumambulation area around the Holy Ka’aba),” he said, adding that the Umrah pilgrims and visitors of the Grand Mosque will take advantage of the first phase of the expansion project in the holy month of Ramadan.

Accompanied by Maj. Gen. Yahya Al-Zahrani, Commander of the Security Forces at the Grand Mosque, Sheikh Al-Sudais inspected the lighting, air-conditioning, fire-extinguishing and sound systems at the new building and its squares that can accommodate more than 400,000 worshippers. He also toured the new areas for ablution and toilets.

He urged Muslims not to repeat Haj or Umrah so as to facilitate performance of the obligatory ritual by those who did not perform it before.

Sheikh Al-Sudais also inspected the first phase of the mataf expansion project, especially the temporary mataf area for the pilgrims with special needs that can accommodate 1,500 people per hour.

A major workshop on the expansion project and the services rendered to the faithful is underway in Makkah.

On Tuesday, King Abdullah ordered the partial opening of the new expanded building of the Grand Mosque.

The building is part of the largest ever expansion in the history of the Grand Mosque, launched by King Abdullah in August 2011, at a cost of SR80 billion.

World-class pilgrim city in Makkah soon

Thousands of pilgrims wait for iftar (breaking fast) sitting in rows around
the Holy Kaaba on Wednesday, the first day of Ramadan.
Thursday 11 July 2013

A full-fledged pilgrim city with state-of-the-art facilities will be set up in Makkah, similar to the one planned for Madinah, as part of the Kingdom’s efforts to extend world-class services to the millions of pilgrims who come for Haj and Umrah from around the world.

Haj Minister Bandar Hajar has presented a proposal to Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal for establishing a massive city in Makkah to receive and see off pilgrims.

The city will have offices for all foreign Haj missions in addition to various services required by pilgrims.

It will also have housing units, offices of Umrah companies, museums, exhibition centers and heritage markets.

A committee comprising representatives of government departments has been set up to study all aspects of the project.

The ministry is currently looking for a suitable place for the project, said Hajar.

The final plan will be presented to the governor after the completion of studies, he said.

The government recently unveiled plans to establish a pilgrim city in Madinah on an area of 1.6 million square meters along Hijrah Road with modern facilities and public transport systems to house 200,000 people.

Mohammed Shaker Dahlawi, a consultant engineer with Saudi Railway Co., said the new pilgrim city with world-class facilities would bring about remarkable improvement in pilgrim services.

The project is significant as the number of pilgrims coming to Makkah snowballs year after year.

“Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah wants to extend superior services to the guests of God by carrying out giant projects such as the haram expansion and Haramain Railway,” Dahlawi told Arab News.

Abdul Rahman Yousuf, a Saudi businessman, also welcomed the project saying it would further improve Haj and Umrah services.

He called for an underground railway system to connect the city with the Grand Mosque.

4.8 million pilgrims perform Umrah

Thursday 11 July 2013

A total of 4.8 million pilgrims performed Umrah up until Tuesday, the last day of Shabaan, according to a senior government official.

Hatem Al-Qadi, deputy minister of Haj and spokesman for the ministry, said 4.5 million pilgrims have already left the Kingdom. “We now have only 300,000 people who have not left so far.”

He said the recent extension of applications for Umrah until Ramadan 10 (July 19) would not cause overcrowding.

“We are taking into account the huge expansion project of the tawaf area at the Grand Mosque, which is currently under way. Umrah companies still have time to obtain visas, provided pilgrims in the country leave before new ones arrive.”

He said that the decision to extend the deadline for Umrah visas was welcomed by Umrah companies.

“This expansion project of the two holy mosques is the largest ever. Experts say that the mosque can accommodate a maximum number of 500,000 people each night,” he said.

Al-Qadi said the ministry was conducting inspection campaigns to ensure Umrah companies provide the services they promise pilgrims.

“Of special importance in this regard is that they should provide accommodation, adequate food and adequate transportation to and from the holy places.”

“Sometimes the minister of Haj also participates in the inspections to ensure that everything is alright. He is accompanied on these visits by Issa Rawwas, deputy minister for Umrah affairs,” he said.

Holy month comes in hottest weather

and longest days

Temperatures are expected to rise above 43 degrees Celsius in Makkah this year.
Thursday 11 July 2013

The holy month of Ramadan has approached for Muslims, with scorching summer temperatures and high humidity levels.

This year, the days will also be longer, lasting more than 15 hours in the first few days. Fasting hours will gradually decrease as the month progresses and will last around 14 hours and 40 minutes toward the end of the month.

Temperatures are expected to rise above 43 degrees Celsius in the Kingdom during Ramadan. The holy cities of Makkah and Madinah are expected to record the highest temperature levels besides the Eastern Province, Yanbu and Riyadh.

The coastal city of Jeddah recorded 70 percent humidity on the first day of Ramadan, the highest in the Kingdom, with residents in open areas sweating it out and the holy city of Madinah recording the highest temperature.

Meanwhile, the dusty weather conditions that had Riyadh residents worried two days ahead of Ramadan has since subsided.

The weatherman, however, says this is only temporary and that dusty weather will return to Riyadh in the next few days.

Hussain Al-Qahtani, a spokesperson for the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment, told Arab News yesterday that the temperature during Ramadan was expected to remain hot due to low pressure in the Arabian Peninsula and hot weather conditions in the Middle East region.

According to him, temperatures will range between 43-48 degrees Celsius in the Makkah region, 42-47 in the Madinah region, 44-47 in Riyadh and Central Province, 44-48 in the Eastern Province, 50 degrees Celsius in Al-Ahsa, 39-45 in the Northern Border Provinces and 42-46 in the Southern Province.

Revealing other statistics, Al-Qahtani said that Makkah recorded 49.8 degrees celsius on July 1, 1989, Madinah registered 49 degrees celsius on July 20, 2005, while Riyadh recorded a high of 48 degrees celsius on July 25, 1987, and Dammam recorded 50 degrees Celsius on July 28, 2007.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which is based on the lunar cycle. Consequently, the holy month occurs around 11 days earlier every year in the Gregorian calendar. The cycle for each season takes nine years and the next time Ramadan will occur in spring will only be in 2017.

With summer temperatures reaching their peak across much of the Middle East, remaining hydrated will be the real challenge. Yet despite the hardship caused by a long, hot summer, Ramadan is that period of the year which Muslims all over the world look forward to.

It is, however, important to ensure that harsh weather conditions do not take a toll on the body. During fasting, body energy and fluid levels are low. Hot, spicy or salty food should be avoided during suhoor. Doctors also recommend meals with a high fiber content, which takes a longer time to digest, before beginning the fast.

New prayers mats in Masjid al Haram

سجاد جديد للمسجد الحرام

The old red prayers mats will be given in charity
for mosques in needy countries outside the Kingdom

09/07/2013

An opportunity no Muslim would miss

Friday 12 July 2013

Umrah pilgrims visiting here say it is a privilege and absolute joy to break their fast in the Prophet's Mosque.

Abd Al-Jaleel Fadl, a Pakistani Umrah pilgrim, said he was extremely happy to be in the mosque during Ramadan and had praise for the "great and outstanding services available to visitors as soon as they set foot in this holy land. We were warmly welcomed by all people we met."

"I especially like the umbrellas in the yards of the mosque which protect worshippers from the heat of the sun, and the fans spraying water vapor on worshippers. This is especially valuable for fasting people who move around under high temperatures during the day," he said.

Abd Al-Razzaq Issam, an Egyptian pilgrim, said he always dreamed of visiting the two holy mosques. "Now my dream has come true and I thank Allah for that. I could perform the rituals in this holy month of Ramadan, which brought tears of joy to my eyes. I have been dreaming of doing this for a long time, to visit all these places and drink from the water of Zamzam," he said.

The Prophet's Mosque is a hive of activity during Ramadan. Meals are laid out after Asr prayer, in preparation for Maghrib time. There are all kinds of dates, fruit juices, bottles of water, yoghurt and laban. These are provided free by the residents of Madinah, who do it for the sake of Allah and follow the injunction that every Muslim should provide food to a fasting person.

The mosque is filled with people of all ages, sitting and waiting to break their fast. This spirit of giving and sharing impresses many visitors.

Inside the mosque, only dates, water, laban and coffee are allowed. But in the courtyards, everything can be served: fried chicken, meat, rice, fruits and juice.

It's really a huge banquet, with some Ramadan meals provided in the mosque costing up to SR 8,000.

Fasting — a unique form of worship

Muslims at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah wait for
breaking the fast on the first day of Ramadan on Wednesday.
Friday 12 July 2013

Fasting has been practiced for centuries in connection with religious ceremonies by Christians, Jews, Confucianists, Hindus, Taoists, and Jains. God mentions this fact in the Qur’an:

“O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become righteous.” (Qur’an 2:183)

Some Native American societies fasted to avert catastrophe or to serve as penance for sin. Native North Americans held tribal fasts to avert threatening disasters. Past nations of the Old World, such as the Assyrians and the Babylonians, observed fasting as a form of penance. Jews observe fasting as a form of penitence and purification annually on the Day of Atonement or Yom Kippur. On this day neither food nor drink is permitted.

Early Christians associated fasting with penitence and purification. Later, these fasts were made obligatory, as others days were subsequently added. In the 6th century, the Lenten fast was expanded to 40 days, on each of which only one meal was permitted.

Fasting took another form in the West: The hunger strike, a form of fasting, which in modern times has become a political weapon.

Islam is the only religion that has retained the outward and spiritual dimensions of fasting throughout centuries. Selfish motives and desires of the base self alienate a man from his Creator. The most unruly human emotions are pride, avarice, gluttony, lust, envy, and anger. These emotions by their nature are not easy to control, thus a person must strive hard to discipline them. Muslims fast to purify their soul, it puts a bridle on the most uncontrolled, savage human emotions. People have gone to two extremes with regard to them. Some let these emotions steer their life which lead to barbarism among the ancients, and crass materialism of consumer cultures in modern times. Others tried to deprive themselves completely of these human traits, which in turn led to monasticism.

The fourth pillar of Islam, the fast of Ramadan, occurs once each year during the 9th lunar month, the month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar in which: “…the Qur’an was sent down as a guidance for the people.” (Qur’an 2:185)

God in His infinite mercy has exempted the sick, travelers, and others who are unable from fasting during Ramadan.

Fasting helps Muslims develop self-control, gain a better understanding of God’s gifts and greater compassion toward the deprived. Fasting in Islam involves abstaining from all bodily pleasures between dawn and sunset. Not only is food forbidden, but also any sexual activity. All things which are regarded as prohibited is even more so in this month, due to its sacredness. Each and every moment during the fast, a person suppresses their passions and desires in loving obedience to God. This consciousness of duty and the spirit of patience helps in strengthening our faith. Fasting helps a person gain self-control. A person who abstains from permissible things like food and drink is likely to feel conscious of his sins. A heightened sense of spirituality helps break the habits of lying, staring with lust at the opposite sex, gossiping, and wasting time. Staying hungry and thirsty for just a day’s portion makes one feel the misery of the hundreds of millions who go hungry in the world. After all, why would anyone care about starvation if one has never felt its pangs oneself? One can see why Ramadan is also a month of charity and giving.

At dusk, the fast is broken with a light meal popularly referred to as iftar. Families and friends share a special late evening meal together, often including special foods and sweets served only at this time of the year. Near the end of Ramadan Muslims commemorate the “Night of Power” when the Qur’an was revealed. The month of Ramadan ends with one of the two major Islamic celebrations, the Feast of the Breaking of the Fast, called Eid Al-Fitr. On this day, Muslims joyfully celebrate the completion of Ramadan and customarily distribute gifts to children. Muslims are also obliged to help the poor join in the spirit of relaxation and enjoyment by distributing zakat-ul-fitr, a special and obligatory act of charity in the form of staple foodstuff, in order that all may enjoy the general euphoria of the day.

Madinah transport plan proves to be a blessing

A large number of people use the new public transport service to reach the Prophet’s Mosque.
Friday 12 July 2013

A new round-the-clock public bus transport scheme has been introduced in Madinah to facilitate travel of worshippers and visitors and reduce congestion of vehicles near the mosque.

The governorate’s move also coincides with Ramadan, when millions of Muslim faithful visit the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah.
The service is now available from four centers to transport people to the Prophet’s Mosque.

It covers Prince Muhammad Sports City, Khalediya Parking, Sayed Al-Shuhada Square and Aliya Mall.

“The service will also spread a culture of using public transport among citizens and expats,” said Muhammad bin Saif, a media spokesman of the Madinah governorate.

The service was expanded this year on the directives of Madinah Gov. Prince Faisal bin Salman, who had set up a special panel to bolster the system.
“This will reduce the number of vehicles going toward the mosque, especially during peak hours such as Maghrib and Isha prayers. It will also reduce environmental pollution,” Saif said.

“This service will enable a large number of people to reach the mosque with ease, especially for iftar, and save the time they spend on looking for parking space,” said Abdul Elah Al-Johani, a Saudi.

He requested authorities to continue the service throughout the year.
The service is available for SR 2 (one-way). It was introduced last year but with only one line.

“This year the service covers different areas,” said Ali Al-Marwani.
It will serve a large number of citizens and expatriates who do not have cars.

Conditioned umbrellas to protect worshipers
at Quba mosque from the heat sun
