Wednesday 15 May 2013

The first annual photography competition in the Kingdom will be organized by Raffles Makkah Palace, in partnership with the Saudi Arabian Society for Culture and the Arts (SASCA).

The competition, entitled ‘Inspiring Makkah,’ aims to highlight diversity of the Holy City while supporting emerging artists.

“The competition supports emerging and professional photographers by highlighting their talent, promoting their work, providing financial awards, and creating networking opportunities with seasoned photographers from the Muslim world and Saudi Arabia,” said Khaled Yamak, group director of Communications & Business Development of Fairmont Raffles Hotels International, Makkah (FRHI). “Raffles Hotel and Resorts have a long tradition of supporting local arts and heritage. The competition is also a valuable opportunity to showcase the vitality and dynamism of the Holy City to the whole world,” he added.

Submission is open until June 10, and a panel of distinguished photographers and experts in the field will judge all entries. The 2013 panelists are: Photography professor at the Institute of Technical and Vocational Training Mohammed Al-Malki, photographers Suzan Iskander, Issam Knafani, Lamia Al-Rumaih and Mariam Beydoun. Criteria for evaluation include technique, creativity, composition and innovation.

“We hope to see a very broad range of entries that reflect the city’s diversity. We are looking for participants to capture the passion and intensity of the city and people’s relationship with this amazing holy place,” said Mohammed Al-Malki, award winner of aerial photography of Masjid Al-Haram and Makkah. Winners of the competition will be announced on June 30.

The winner of the competition will be awarded a cash prize of SR 10,000 as well as a complimentary ticket and two-night stay in Raffles Makkah Palace. SR 5,000 and SR 2,500 will be awarded to the photographers who come in second and third place respectively. An elderly Kazakh Muslim to cycle to Mecca

He has visited not only all Kazakhstani regions, but almost all CIS countries.

27 Apr 2013

Unusual trip is planned to travel by a 76-year-old cyclist Olzhabay Smagulov. He is set to cycle his two-wheeled bicycle from Karaganda straight to the holy places of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Express K newspaper reports.

The first bicycle trip he made in 2003 was from Kazakhstan to Turkmenistan. He has visited not only all Kazakhstani regions, but almost all CIS countries. The traveler dedicates his trips to memorials.

The current route however, is longer and harder. Olzhabay Smagulov plans to start from Ashgabat and drive through Iran and Turkey. However, the UAE government set a clause: to drive across the border only with a group. So Olzhabay Smagulov is busy looking for like-minded people who want to join in such trip. He hopes to become the first Muslim (from Kazakhstan) who reached the holy places on bicycle.

Rare photos on display in

Al-Aqs Mosque exhibition

Tuesday 14 May 2013

The Al-Aqsa Mosque exhibition kicked off at the Shadda Gallery in Red Sea Mall in Jeddah on Sunday.

The event was organized by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and was inaugurated by Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary-general of the OIC, in the presence of Jamal Abdullatif Al-Shobki, Palestinian ambassador to the Kingdom, Emad Sha’at, Palestinian consul general, Saleh Atiyah, Algerian consul general and dean of the Arab Consuls General Group.

The event was also attended by other diplomatic officials, eminent personalities from the academic and cultural community and members of the press.

The Turkish photographer, Orhan Durgut, exhibited 54 photos of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the first of the 'qiblas' (the direction Muslims face for prayer) and the third holy mosque after Makkah and Madinah.

“It is worth mentioning that this event is part of the OIC’s efforts to raise awareness among Muslims to protect the Al-Aqsa Mosque, as this dated holy site is still under occupation,” he said.

The artist took the pictures during his visit to the mosque, saying they reflect the strategic, architectural and historic elements of the site.
Durgut also stated that the religious significance of the Al–Aqsa Mosque for Muslims lies in the fact that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) went to Jerusalem as stated in the Qur'an.

Ihsanoglu thanked King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, for his support and commended the Kingdom's position vis-a-vis the Palestinian cause. Jamal Al-Shobki also thanked the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques for his support, expressing sorrow that few Muslims have the opportunity to visit Jerusalem given the fact that it is occupied by Israel, a country with few political ties in the region.

Coronavirus News

Coronavirus not certain to be severe
— discoverer

Monday 13 May 2013

CAIRO: The doctor who discovered a new SARS-like virus says it will probably trigger an epidemic at some point, but not necessarily in its current virulent form.

The new strain of coronavirus (nCoV) that Ali Mohamed Zaki found last year, related to one that caused the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003, has killed at least 18 people in the Middle East and Europe.

On Sunday, the World Health Organization said it seemed likely the new virus, which can cause coughing, fever and pneumonia, could be passed between humans, but only after prolonged, close contact.

Zaki, an Egyptian virologist who identified the new virus last June in a patient at the hospital where he was working in Jeddah, noted in a telephone interview on Monday that no one else at that hospital had been infected at the time.

More recently, there has been a cluster of cases in a hospital in Hofuf in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern province, as well as a case of transmission between two patients sharing a hospital room in France.

Zaki, now working at Ain Shams university in Cairo, said the virus was probably mutating. “From what is going on, it seems it is going step-by-step to become more easily transmitted,” he told Reuters.

But he said doctors and authorities were in a better position to deal with an outbreak than they had been with SARS because the new virus had been identified relatively early:
“Now we have the virus before the epidemic happened — and I think it will happen — and we have tools to diagnose it.”

Lessons of SARS

SARS emerged in Asia and took several months to mutate into a highly contagious form, eventually killing 775 people as it swept across the world in 2003 before being contained by isolation measures and a broad public health campaign.

Zaki noted that it was unclear whether the new virus, which has been fatal in more than half of the 32 confirmed severe cases so far, would still remain as lethal if it became more contagious.

But he said authorities should prepare for the worst and apply standard infection controls such as isolation, just as they did with SARS, noting that Saudi Arabia has a large population of expatriate workers who could spread the disease around the world.

Haj season

Furthermore, Saudi Arabia draws millions of pilgrims to the Muslim holy cities of Makkah and Madinah for the annual Haj pilgrimage, which next takes place in October.

“The possibility of transmitting the virus outside Saudi Arabia? I think, yes, there is a great possibility because many people are working in Saudi Arabia, many people are visiting Saudi Arabia for religious tourism,” Zaki said.

Michael Baker, of the department of public health at the University of Otago in Wellington, New Zealand, agreed that the new virus could turn into a serious threat.

“The arrival of SARS in 2003 reminded us that entirely new human infections can emerge without warning and develop into global epidemics that may be difficult to control,” he said in an e-mailed comment.

An earlier Arab News report a comment by a World Health Organization (WHO) official on Sunday saying the world can learn a lesson from the experience and knowledge that Saudi Arabia has gained fighting coronavirus.
“One of the reasons why more cases have been identified in KSA may be because they have gone ahead to strengthen their surveillance system, lab capacity and network,” Keiji Fukuda, assistant director-general of the WHO’s Health Security and Environment, said in a press conference in Riyadh after his team visited health facilities in Hofuf where a number of infected cases were treated.

Saudi Health Minister Abdullah Al-Rabeeah said that since last September, the Kingdom diagnosed 45 virus infected patients, of whom 15 died.
“We will continue to cooperate with the WHO and other international organizations in the fight against infectious diseases for the betterment of the nation,” he stressed.

Coronavirus is ‘not spreading’

Tuesday 14 May 2013

The Ministry of Health said yesterday that it had stopped the spread of coronavirus from Al-Ahsa in the Eastern Province to other parts of the Kingdom.

The virus had reached Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, but no further incidences have been reported.

“No new cases of the virus were found in any part of the Kingdom,” Dr. Ziad Al-Memish, undersecretary to the Ministry of Health for Public Health, told Arab News.

So far, the Kingdom has reported 24 cases of the virus, including nine fatal cases. The recent cases included two men aged 48 and 58.

The first patient, a 48-year-old man with multiple coexisting medical conditions, became ill on April 29, and is in stable condition, while the latter fully recovered and was discharged from the hospital May 3 after falling ill on April 6. Al-Memish said the ministry has taken all precautions against the spread of the disease.

However, he added that in keeping with the transparency policy, the ministry would keep the public informed of all developments in this matter.

Keiji Fukuda, assistant director-general of WHO’s Health Security and Environment, who visited the Eastern Province on Saturday, said the Kingdom has taken the coronavirus situation seriously and the Saudi Ministry of Health has initiated public health actions, including intensifying surveillance, initiating investigations and ensuring control measures are in place.

“One of the reasons why more cases have been identified in the Kingdom may be because they have gone ahead to strengthen their surveillance system and lab capacity and network,” he said. “We know that the disease is caused by a virus from a group called coronaviruses.”

He said one member of the coronavirus family is the SARS virus. This new virus is not the SARS virus. He said the virus has infected people since 2012.

Experts hired as 6 new
coronavirus cases detected

Wednesday 15 May 2013

The government has hired US and Canadian experts to help control the spread of coronavirus as six new suspected cases have been identified in Al-Ahsa, raising the total number of the infected cases in the Kingdom to 26 since September.

Fifteen victims have died since the outbreak of the deadly disease. Nine deaths occurred in Al-Ahsa.

Dr. Ziad Al-Memish, undersecretary at the Ministry of Health, said that all six suspected cases were from the Eastern Province.

He said that one of the six patients has already been discharged from the hospital while the remaining five are kept under observation.
Al-Memish said the foreign specialists are working in coordination with the National Committee of Infectious Diseases.

The committee, headed by Al-Memish, is composed of consultants from the local universities and various health agencies across the Kingdom. It is tasked to make scientific recommendations about the disease.
Disease experts suggested that the new virus be called Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

The virus can be passed between humans following prolonged contact.
Dr. Siouxsie Wiles, a microbiologist and infectious disease specialist at the University of Auckland, told a London-based newspaper that a feature of disease was that “the majority of infections have occurred within health care facilities, such as hospitals, as has just been reported in France. Those people were in hospital for a reason though, suggesting that some underlying disease may be required to make people more vulnerable to infection with the coronavirus.”

Transmission of the disease is thought to be limited.

The virus has reached Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, but no further incidences have been reported.

“No new cases of the virus were found in any other part of the Kingdom,” Al-Memish said.

In an earlier statement, Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah said high temperature, cough and severe pneumonia affecting both lungs are the main symptoms of the disease.

“The way of transmission and source of the virus are still unknown. Serious efforts are being made for further research, survey and study; to inform the people ways to tackle the deadly disease,” the minister said.

The implementation of 30% of the removal phase
of expansion of the Prophet's Mosque

Google t: Said Ghazi pole head of the Real Estate Committee in Madinah Chamber of Commerce and a member of the National Committee of Real Estate: The removal phases of expansion work of the Prophet's Mosque have yet to reach 30 per cent, describing the project as "Giant."

And cut the work of expansion of the mosque of Prophet Mohammad strides and wide in the first phase, the expansion ordered by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz during his visit to the city of Medina last summer, where they were in the past weeks to remove about a dozen properties next to the Prophet's Mosque from the eastern side, but specialists say that the phases of the removal did not go after only about 30 per cent of the overall work of the expansion.

The pole that construction work is that will take a lot of time, especially as the specifications required for the project is the highest level, and according to the highest tastes and techniques, blaming Development Authority Medina in what he described as "fuzzy" in the detection limits of the project and trends.

Gt: Kotb said: "The delay in the decision after the removal, the places that must be developed befuddled developers and investors alike, and delayed a decision in this matter shows investment in the region of the recession and the developers of the confusion in the absence of a clear picture of future heart of the region, blurry picture of the places to be covered by development , "pointing out that the project is a giant project has positive effects on all economic levels in Medina, but only clarify the required dimensions.

The engineer Mohammed Ali Amin Madinah Development Authority has made it clear that the expansion will include the western and eastern sides and northern parts of the scene surrounding the Prophet's Mosque in the event of completeness accommodate about two million visitors and 600 thousand others.

Gt: And the price of Secretary of the development of Medina at the time the approval of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques on the designs and the final plans for the expansion of the Prophet's Mosque, to confirm that the consent of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques come in the context of his interest in the continuing care of the maintenance of the Two Holy Mosques and attention to them, and in order to provide a means of comfort for pilgrims and visitors.

He said Al-Ali said: "This expansion constitutes a quantum leap great, and is the major round expansions, which affected the Prophet's Mosque throughout its history, confirms the keenness of the leadership to serve the Two Holy Mosques," adding that "the efforts and capabilities that have been developed for this purpose, the High Big compatible with comprehensive plan for the city of Medina who has a personal follow-up and continuous support from Prince Faisal bin Salman. "

The report pointed to the development of Medina, that the number of properties expected to be removed in favor of the project from the eastern and western sides of approximately one hundred drug, while a total compensation of about 25 billion riyals from an area of about 12.5 hectares.

It is expected the start of the removal of the remaining properties during the next few days while removing a number of other postponed them until after the expiration of the month of Ramadan, so as not to affect significantly to the smooth movement of visitors and pilgrims experiencing in the holy month of their maximum level.
