Just steps away is Masjid Nabawi, the second holiest site in Islam and one of the largest mosques in the world, making the hotel ideal for religious travellers.

The hotel is set to become a hub for events, meetings and conferences with state-of-the-art facilities at the disposal of corporate travellers. The hotel features a multi-functional business centre, five fully-equipped meeting rooms and free internet access throughout the hotel.

Pascal Gauvin, Chief Operating Officer, India, Middle East and Africa for IHG, added: “We have a long history in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, having opened our first hotel in the country in 1975, and we’re proud of our commitment to the country. This will be our fourth Crowne Plaza in Saudi Arabia and we are confident that, like its sister hotels, it will enjoy resounding success.”

IHG is currently the largest international hotel company in Saudi Arabia, both by number of hotels (23) and by number of rooms (5,600). Umrah-Plus visas

________________________

Saudi Arabia to relax visa rules
for foreign tourists to Islamic sites

Friday, May 10, 2013

Saudi Arabia will relax visa rules to allow foreigners to visit certain Islamic and historical sites. Prince Sultan bin Salman Al Saud, Chairman, Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities, said that from this year Saudi would issue ‘Umrah-Plus’ visas, which would permit supervised tours of other sites to those visiting the country on Islamic pilgrimages, a report in arabianbusiness.com stated. The conservative Gulf kingdom currently does not issue tourist visas to travellers.

“The month-long visa can also be used for tourism. What changed is that we’re now moving to Islamic history sites to revive those to make them more presentable and to create museums and experiences,” Prince Al Saud said. He added that the Saudi government was investing “a lot of money” in building and renovating about 30 museums and Islam-themed attractions in Makkah and Medinah. “There are a lot of heritage hotels now being constructed in small villages with mud and stone. We’re serious about reigniting the heritage of Saudi Arabia,” he said.

Last year the country saw tourism revenues rise ten per cent to SR (Saudi Riyal) 61.8 billion, the majority of which is derived from Islamic pilgrimages and visitors from other GCC nations, who do not require visas.

Prince Al Saud said that tourism was a major contributor to the country’s efforts to increase employment among nationals. “Tourism is the second most Saudiazed economic sector, with 28 per cent. That’s big for a sector that is new and not yet been fully supported. We’re serious about making tourism a major player in the economy and also in job creation, and keeping Saudis in Saudi Arabia,” he added.

Prince Al Saud hoped that the country would be able to emulate some of Dubai’s success in becoming an East to West travel hub. “People can stop, perform Umrah, and connect from Madinah or from Makkah. We also connect from airports like Riyadh, and Ha’il and Jizan for cargo and support,” he said. “We have the added advantage of the location of Saudi Arabia, the accessibility of Saudi Arabia, the airports, the abundance of fuel, and the services,” he said.

Saudi tourism may get a boost from

easing of visa rules

Thursday, May 09, 2013

Dubai: Saudi Arabia may soon drop its barriers to GCC residents that want to explore other areas of the kingdom. “Soon, we will announce new visa packages for travellers to the kingdom,” said Prince Sultan Bin Salman Bin Abdul Aziz, President of Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA), during a forum at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) on Tuesday.

He added that visitors to Makkah and Madinah “want to visit more of the country”.

Saudi Arabia issues a number of visas to non-GCC nationals, designed for the purposes of business, family visits, Umrah and Haj, among others. Yet, there are no tourism visas in the kingdom.

While the exact time of when these visa packages will be launched remains unknown, travellers can expect something else in the short term. Due to be implemented in late December this year is the Umrah Plus programme, which allows travellers to go on trips to other cities in the country after they perform Umrah, according to Abdullah S. Al Jehani, vice-president for marketing and programmes at SCTA.

This leaves non-Muslim visitors with fewer options. Their entry is limited to business engagements, Al Jehani said.

Saudi Arabia’s marketing efforts are targeted at GCC countries, its strongest international markets, as well as nationals and residents of the kingdom, according to Al Jehani.

While the country welcomes millions of pilgrims every year, Islamic tourism is not Saudi Arabia’s only focus. “We focus our marketing on Saudi Arabia’s business activities, such as exhibitions, and antiquities,” he said.

The capital city Riyadh is home to a number of trade exhibitions. The Riyadh Exhibitions Company (REC) has organised more than 330 shows in the last 30 years, across different sectors, including food and beverages, automotives and energy, and has attracted international participants from over 40 countries.

Business tourism in the kingdom has shown modest growth over the last few years. “Business tourism in the country is growing at a rate of four per cent year-on-year, and it is expected to reach double-digits in the next two to three years.” Al Jehani said. He added that there were more than two million business trips in Saudi Arabia last year.

Meanwhile, the country’s antiquities or cultural artifacts are being emphasised in the country’s marketing efforts. The SCTA, which participated at ATM this week, exhibited various products that cities across Saudi Arabia have to offer. The kingdom is expected to host 15.8 million tourists by 2014, according to Business Monitor International (BMI), an international industry consultant.

The hospitality sector is showing strong signs of growth to keep up with rising inflow of tourists. Around 178,870 hotel rooms are expected to be delivered in Saudi Arabia by 2017, with occupancy rates rising to 63 per cent, according to BMI. There are several hotel brands in the country, including Rotana, Hyatt Hotels and Resorts and Accor.

Additionally, Saudi Arabia has been ramping up efforts in developing its infrastructure, with major rail and road projects expected to be delivered in the coming years.

Saudi Arabia has 35 airports that are being developed, expanded or upgraded. These will have a combined capacity of handling 82 million passengers by 2016.

SR 5.5 billion Haramain compensation paid

Saturday 11 May 2013

The Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) has paid out SR 5.5 billion in compensation for properties appropriated for the Haramain high-speed railway.

Chairman of the SRO Mohammed K. Al-Suwaiket said recently that a further SR 2.1 billion will be paid for properties that have been identified. This will bring the total compensation to SR 7.6 billion.

The Haramain high-speed railway is one of the biggest projects undertaken by the Saudi government to provide good public transport for pilgrims, residents and citizens.

The 449-kilometer project is also known as the “Western Railway” or "Makkah-Madinah high-speed railway.” It will link the holy cities of Madinah and Makkah via King Abdullah Economic City, Rabigh, Jeddah and King Abdul Aziz International Airport (KAIA). It will also connect with the national network in Jeddah and is expected to begin operations at the end of 2014.

Construction started in March 2009. The railway is expected to carry 3 million passengers annually, including many Haj and Umrah pilgrims, helping to relieve traffic congestion on the roads.

The double-track line will be electrified, with the train traveling at around 360 kilometers an hour. It will complete the 78 kilometers between Jeddah and Makkah in less than 30 minutes.

There will be five stations, at the Knowledge Economic City, King Abdullah Economic City, KAIA, in Jeddah’s city center and Makkah in the south. The Makkah central station will be located near the third ring road. The Jeddah central station will be located on Haramain Road. The railway route will be on the median of the Haramain road. The station in KAIA will be a terminus station. Madinah will have only one passenger station that may be required for the Haj terminal at Jeddah airport.

The design of the stations will be “aesthetically iconic,” taking into account Islamic architectural traditions.

They will have shops, restaurants, mosques, car parks and VIP lounges.

E-system to ensure swift Haj visa process

Sunday 12 May 2013

An international electronic network will be established for the reception of Umrah visa applications and the issuance of visas, said Minister of Haj, Bandar bin Hajar. The network will directly link the ministries of Interior and Foreign Affairs to other government departments.

The new system will implement regulations concerned with the follow-up of Umrah and Haj companies and their compliance with the specifications for introducing the service under the ministry’s supervision.

The minister said Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has called for the implementation of this service as soon as possible.

An Umrah visa applicant would apply through a foreign agent that is contracted with a Saudi Haj company. The foreign agent provides the data for an Umrah-visa applicant through the electronic network and links the application to the group of services for which the agent is contracted with the domestic company. The agent then pays for the services to the approved Saudi company via bank transfer.

Umrah pilgrims’ data are then provided to the Ministry of Interior, who will issue an electronic entry number for each pilgrim. The numbers are provided to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who will issue the visa 48 hours after it receives the pilgrim’s information via the Ministry of Interior. The foreign agent will be notified to appear at the Saudi embassy to have the visa issued in the applicant’s passport.

After the pilgrim has arrived in the Kingdom, the Ministry of Haj will ensure that all services paid for are provided through field committees. These committees would detect company violations and submit reports to the Legal Affairs Department that will investigate the violations and issue the required penalties.

An elderly Kazakh Muslim

to cycle to Mecca

27 Apr 2013

Unusual trip is planned to travel by a 76-year-old cyclist Olzhabay Smagulov. He is set to cycle his two-wheeled bicycle from Karaganda straight to the holy places of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Express K newspaper reports.

The first bicycle trip he made in 2003 was from Kazakhstan to Turkmenistan. He has visited not only all Kazakhstani regions, but almost all CIS countries. The traveler dedicates his trips to memorials.

The current route however, is longer and harder. Olzhabay Smagulov plans to start from Ashgabat and drive through Iran and Turkey. However, the UAE government set a clause: to drive across the border only with a group. So Olzhabay Smagulov is busy looking for like-minded people who want to join in such trip. He hopes to become the first Muslim (from Kazakhstan) who reached the holy places on bicycle.

Madinah needs 500 hotels in five years

Tuesday 14 May 2013

Authorities in Madinah are faced with the pressing issue of constructing 500 hotels within the span of five years to avoid a hospitality crisis.

Madinah is expected to attract 1 million visitors per month upon the completion of the expansion work at the airport and the Prophet’s Mosque, according to a board member at the Madinah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI).

“Around 33,000 visitors come to Madinah everyday, which amounts to almost 1 million tourists per month. According to these figures, we will have a serious predicament unless we prepare ourselves in advance,” said Abdul Ghani Al-Ansari, the MCCI member. Al-Ansari explained that the authorities have two options to tackle this issue: To rapidly finalize the compensations of the expropriated properties from around the mosque and set a mechanism to ensure that the compensation money is used to build new hotels.

The other option is to establish four or five companies, using the funds that would be allocated for the compensations, making the owners of the expropriated properties investors in the hospitality projects.

He also revealed that 20 out of 214 hotels, which lie around the circumference of the Prophet’s Mosque, will be demolished for smooth construction of the expansion projects. Madinah has 17 percent of the total number of hotels in the Kingdom, in addition to 30 furnished apartment units, according to a report issued earlier by the MCCI.

Madinah has nine five-star, 11 four-star and 44 three-star hotels. While there are five furnished units ranked as second tier accommodations, and 10 units categorized as third class in the city.

Abdullah Al-Sawat, executive director of the branch, said during a training session that targeted 20 employees of the branch, that these courses aim to develop the skills of workers in the tourism sector to achieve the visions of Prince Sultan bin Salman, president of SCTA, to educate and develop the staff and promote local tourism.

He said GIS will help employees of the branch to be familiar with the applications of SCTA, including information, statistics and other details to provide a better service to visitors and worshippers.

Essam Khundaneh, a GIS expert, said GIS is an important system for all sectors. “Its leading role in the day-to-day operations and planning as well as analysis of information related to the work environment is essential.”

He added: “By using technology, one can take advantage of the possibilities the program provides to best serve tourists and worshipers coming to Makkah, and enable them to perform their rituals easily and safely.”

He said a GIS user can within seconds identify the streets leading to the Grand Mosque, as well as the state of traffic along the way.

“A person can also use the system to locate hotels and all details needed in this regard,” he added.

GIS can be used to exchange information between the authorities, he said, as well as interacting with the various development projects established to support the development of tourism.
