MADINAH — The owner of a house in Madinah that was designed to resemble the Holy Ka’aba has been ordered to repaint the building.
The house owner designed and painted his house in Al-Mestarah neighborhood of Madinah to resemble the holy structure and was criticized by local residents.
Okaz/Saudi Gazette witnessed the repainting of the house.
However, the house door is still painted in gold, resembling the Kaaba’s door. The owner refused to talk to Okaz/Saudi Gazette.
The head of the Prince Naif Chair at the Islamic University of Madinah Ghazi Al-Metairi said common sense should govern a Muslim’s actions.
Designing houses to resemble the Ka’aba is a degrading act, he said, adding that the design of the house was considered a deviation in thinking and vision.
Spokesman for Madinah governorate Mohammad Saleh said in a statement that the governorate became aware of media reports on the controversial house and coordinated with the municipality to investigate the matter.
The general supervisor of municipality branches was contacted and the owner of the house was called and told to change the house’s color.
He was also asked to change any exterior features that may resemble the Ka’aba.
Concerned authorities are keeping an eye on the house until they are satisfied it does not resemble the holy building.

MAKKAH — A number of tourist experts and Makkah residents have called for the establishment of an international airport in the holy city to serve pilgrims and visitors in light of the mega development projects currently being executed in the holy city.
Speaking to Al-Riyadh newspaper, they said an air link between Makkah and Madinah would facilitate visits to the two holy cities and satisfy the need of an increasing population for easy and quick transport.
Makkah residents were unanimous in their view that an international airport in their city was long overdue.
They believed that the dream was not difficult to realize in view of the large uninhabited areas available outside the central zone around the Grand Mosque.
They said these vast empty plots of land could be used for the construction of an international airport that would not only serve residents and pilgrims but also reduce pressure on King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and the Taif airport.
Hamad Al-Ghammas, a businessman, said he had conducted a feasibility study about the significance of establishing an airport in Makkah.
"With an area of 15,159 hectares and an annual population growth of 8.3 percent, Makkah is the third largest city in the Kingdom."
Al-Ghammas expected the Makkah population to increase to 10 million by 2030.
"Makkah is steadily growing with the expansion of surrounding villages and hamlets," he said, adding that the city is supervising 11 regions and 99 suburban districts.
According to Al-Ghammas, rooms in hotels and furnished apartments occupy about 39.9 percent of the constructed area in Makkah, while commercial buildings occupy an area of 6.56 percent.
This is considered a high ratio reflecting the significance of trade in the holy city.
He said the increasing number of vehicles on the roads leading to Makkah makes the establishment of an airport a necessity.
Quoting official statistics, Al-Ghammas said on the 27th night of Ramadan more than 2 million cars entered Makkah, while about 1.8 million leave it on that night.
“Makkah is also a seasonal headquarters for government ministries, diplomatic and Haj missions in addition to senior government officials who are in charge of Haj affairs."
Al-Ghammas said the establishment of the airport would enable the transit passengers to perform Umrah quickly.
Abdullah Omar Qadi, deputy chairman of the National Umrah Committee, said the establishment of an airport in Makkah is a dream that has been on hold for a very long time.
He said the airport would save visitors the two-hour road journey between Jeddah and Makkah. "When the airport is established the same journey will not take more than 30 minutes."
Qadi noted that the number of Umrah pilgrims last year was about 6 million and said this number would reach 10 million when the expansion project of the Grand Mosque is completed.
Saad Jameel Al-Qurashi, chairman of the transport committee of the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the establishment of an international airport in Makkah will spare Haj and Umrah companies the time they usually spend in welcoming the pilgrims at KAIA, clearing their luggage and transporting them to Makkah.

Makkah Mayor Osama Al-Barr said the municipality aims to develop an advanced network of modern roads to link various places and districts in the city.
When completed, the Ring Road IV will be a major addition to the transport infrastructure in the holy city.

The contracts have been signed with specialized companies experienced in such works.
The contract for the intersection of Madinah Road with the ring road and a connecting road with the Old Jeddah Road is at a cost of SR 633.14 million while the second contract of SR 418 million is for the ring road’s intersection with the Taif Sale road.

MAKKAH – Floods caused by heavy rains at Al-Kar and Al-Hada mountains prevented scores of residents from getting to their homes in several valleys outside Makkah Thursday night.
The Civil Defense sent text messages warning drivers to stay off of roads and avoid flood-hit areas.
Despite this warning, many drivers attempted to navigate flood waters and were forced to abandon their vehicles and fight heavy currents to get to dry land.
Noman Valley’s roads were recently asphalted and streetlights erected but floodwaters caused extensive damage to infrastructure and there were reports of downed light poles that in turn caused small fires.
Civil Defense rescue teams were put on alert to respond to any emergency situation.
More than 10 people had to be saved by rescue teams after they became trapped in the flood. They suffered light injuries. Three vehicles became submerged in floodwaters and had to be removed.
Makkah Civil Defense spokesman Maj. Gen. Salih Al-Alyani said teams remain on standby and are ready to deal with any emergency situation.

More than 2,000 young men will lose their jobs if downtown Madinah hotels are demolished.
About 150 hotels in downtown Madinah are scheduled for demolition to make way for the expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque. Significant job losses totaling about 2,000 are expected.
Some of the young men hold high school diplomas, and some are college graduates.
Many workers are employed by the hotels and not through the Human Resources Department. The workers say they hold the Labor Office responsible for finding employment for them after their termination.
They want authorities to allocate pieces of land to large property developers to build new hotels so new jobs are created.
Many workers are the sole breadwinners of their families.
