Minbar of Masjid al Haram

منبر المسجد الحرام

A minbar (Arabic: منبر‎, also spelt mimbar or mimber) is a pulpit in the mosque where the imam (leader of prayer) stands to deliver sermons (khutbah خطبة ) where the speaker sits and lectures the congregation. The word is a derivative of the Arabic root m-b-r 'to raise, elevate'; the Arabic plural is manābir (Arabic: منابر‎).

The ornamental design for the Masjid al Haram minbar was produced by Jay Bonner in the same pan-Islamic style that he originally developed for the Sliding Domes at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. This white marble for this minbar is from Macedonia, and was hand carved by the finest Muslim stone workers in Ajmer, India. The floral panels are of two types: high relief, and pierced. The high relief panels include inlaid Persian turquoise stones set in gold plated bezels. The floral elements in the pierced panels are designed so that they have optimum contact with one another; thus providing greater structural integrity to each pierced panel. The Masjid al Haram minbar is mechanized so that it can be easily removed from the Haram courtyard during the Hajj; thereby avoiding potential accidents among the throng of circumambulating pilgrims.

Completed in 2002.

For this revered mosque, Saray Design was given the honour of making a minbar in pure white marble set with turquoise leaves and Qu'ranic calligraphy, which could combine 21st century German technology with 17th century Mughal craftsmanship, to create a movable and air conditioned structure--the first of its kind.

A square meter of land in Makkah

now costs SR 2 m

Saturday 9 February 2013

Investors may have to pay a whopping SR 2 million for a square meter of land in the central zone around Makkah by the end of 2013, said chairman of the real estate committee at the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mansour Abu Rayash.

Prices ranged between SR 500,000 and SR 1.5 million in 2012. A square meter in a strategic area in Japan is about $ 100,000, seven times cheaper than Makkah, he was quoted as saying in Al-Sharq newspaper.

“Real estate investments rose to 45 percent in Makkah alone while the rest of the country’s regions accounted for the remaining 55 percent,” he said, adding that the percentage would increase to more than 50 percent in 2013.

“The real estate market in Makkah witnessed above-expectation figures in terms of pricing and deals. Forty-five percent of all liquidity poured into the city of Makkah.”

“Makkah is witnessing massive activity in its real estate market caused by property-expropriation compensations which amounted to SR 200 billion in 2012.”

Abu Rayash said a lot of money was poured into the real estate market in Makkah by many investors from different regions including Riyadh, Qasim, Eastern Province and southern regions. He said liquidity in Makkah would increase to SR 250 billion in 2013 as a result of “the demolishing of the Parallel Road, the expansion of the Madafe, Jabal Alkaba and Harat Assada districts and progress on the issue of unplanned districts in the city.”

Abu Rayash said many investors are heading to Makkah instead of other main cities such as Riyadh and Jeddah because of the massive growth in the numbers of Umrah and Haj pilgrims. “It is expected the city will receive seven million Umrah pilgrims and four million Haj pilgrims this year as a result of expanding the Holy Sites, the new Mashaer and Makkah trains and the completion of the Jamrat Bridge expansion.”

Haj minister starts meetings

with foreign Haj delegations

Saturday 9 February 2013

Haj Minister Bandar Hajjar will start meeting today with Haj officials of various countries to discuss arrangement for this year’s Haj pilgrimage.

Over the next three months, Hajjar will meet with officials of 70 Haj offices from different parts of the world.

While making the announcement, Hajjar said the name “Haj delegations” has been changed to Haj offices.

This year the Haj expected to fall on Oct.13.

“The Haj offices, in collaboration with the Tawafa establishments, the Car Syndicate and the United Agents Office and the Guides Establishment of Madinah, will discuss details of arrangements for the pilgrimage including pilgrim housing with the aim of achieving a record success in offering pilgrim services,” Hajjar said in a statement to the Saudi Press Agency yesterday.

The minister said these meetings are organized sufficiently in advance before the beginning of the Haj season annually and prepare plans for foreign Haj officials and organizers so that they can organize pilgrims’ journey, accommodation and transport in the best possible manner.

The minister stressed the need for organizing Haj awareness programs for pilgrims before they set out for Haj from their native countries. The awareness programs are aimed to instruct pilgrims on the correct conduct of the Haj rites, and also the way they would be grouped for the stone-throwing rites at Jamarat. The program will educate pilgrims about the need to follow all safety regulations and the Kingdom’s rules while they are in Makkah, Madinah and the holy sites.

The minister will also advise Haj officials to complete formalities such as signing contracts of air transport before the beginning of the Ramadan.

The minister also said that all Haj offices should hire houses that have new licenses and supply the ministry a copy of their licenses. The offices should also ensure that pilgrims have been instructed on all details related to the pilgrimage before they start their journey to the Kingdom.

The Haj offices should also sent their officials for grouping of their respective pilgrims. Those officials should arrive in the Kingdom ahead of the pilgrims because they have to attend the training programs on pilgrims grouping for stone throwing organized by the ministry, the minister said.

The minister added that the authorities in the Kingdom are keen on making the Haj safe and comfortable for each pilgrim and that is why various expansion and development projects have been implemented in Makkah, holy sites and Madinah.

Jeddah’s Briman Bridge

to ease travel to holy cities

Briman Bridge as part of Haramain Train project was opened on Thursday

The completed bottom of Briman Bridge, which was opened on Thursday.
Saturday 9 February 2013

A portion of an important bridge at intersection on Jeddah’s vital Haramain road leading to King Abdulaziz International Airport opened on Thursday.

Commonly known as Briman Bridge in East Jeddah, it is a vital conduit for transport systems between Jeddah’s Airport and holy city of Makkah.

It also plays an important role in connecting between two holy cities of Makkah and Madinah besides Jeddah. The new bridge will also serve as the main conduit for newly constructed additional highway of 85 kilometers section that links the airport and holy city of Makkah through Huda . It is expected to reduce travel time by half.

Unlike other bridges inside Jeddah and built by Jeddah Municipality, the Briman Bridge was constructed by the Ministry of Transport as part of Haramain Train project.

The old bridge, which was built 30 years ago, was demolished last June for the train line in which trains pass through the airport. The new bridge was scheduled to completed within seven months. However, technical issues related to pipelines of Aramco retail depot in adjacent area and additional modification to the storm water facility led to delays.

The bridge measures 114 meters long and 20 meters wide. The lane that comes from the airport to the Makkah Highway was opened on Thursday. An hour later the lane in opposite direction from Makkah highway to the airport opened.

However, the vertical part that connects east to west and vice versa remains under construction and closed as work continues.

The train route that links King Abdulaziz International Airport with two holy cities will pass through to Jeddah’s main central station at Sulaimania, and then to Makkah through this route of Harmain Highway. On Harmain Highway, seven bridges are scheduled for construction. They include structures on Tahlia Street and King Abdullah Road where preparations are being made for the demolition of existing structures. Several properties were already demolished in this route to allow the train line to pass.

Real estate prices surged in the adjacent Briman Bridge area and other locations along the Harmain Road due to the rapid development and improvement of the transport system via Hada Road, as well as the coming Haramain high speed train.

Apart of facilitating train movement, newly constructed bridges will ease traffic on Harmain Highway.

Pak officials explore ways

to improve pilgrim services

11 February 2013 - 30 Rabi Al-Awaal 1434 H

JEDDAH — Pakistan has asked Saudi Arabia to increase its Haj quota by 20,000 for the upcoming Haj season.

Pakistan’s Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, talking to media persons at the residence of Consul General of Pakistan Aftab A. Khokher here Saturday night, said: “Pakistan has a quota of around 180,000 pilgrims this year, but we have again requested the Saudi authorities to increase it by 20,000.”

The Pakistani minister had a detailed meeting with Saudi Haj Minister Dr. Bandar Bin Mohammad Al-Hajjar Saturday, where they discussed ways to improve the services for Hajis.

The minister said Haj applications this year would again be accepted on first-come-first-served basis. The 180,000 pilgrims would be divided 50:50 between the government and the private Haj companies. He pointed out that airfare remained the same the last two years. “This year, however, it will go up. The final cost of the Haj package is still being worked out,” said the minister.

Shah said the Saudi side wants most of the Hajis from Pakistan to land in Madinah. He said: “I also wish it was possible, but Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has some route issues. We will, however, look into it again. Anyhow, we will be sending 40,000 pilgrims to Madinah this year.”

This move in fact would save pilgrims time and travel expenses since they would not have to travel the same route twice. Once they land in Madinah, they would stay in Makkah till Haj.

Al-Hajjar, kicking off the annual round of meetings with Haj delegations, urged the delegation to help prepare the pilgrims for Haj before they begin their journey.

Shah asked the Saudi side to hand over field offices to the respective bodies at least a fortnight before the season starts so they can plan things accordingly. The Haj missions, according to the visiting minister, are given the field offices only days before the Haj season.

Ambassador Muhammad Naeem Khan, who was also part of the Pakistani delegation that met Al-Hajjar, said they also raised the issue of permits issued annually to buildings in the holy cities. “We asked the minister to look into the possibility of issuing the permits for three years, so that we can contract the same buildings for three years. We would not have to run around looking for buildings every year.”

Shah pointed out that he has instructed the Pakistan Haj Mission to hire buildings in the same vicinity so that it is easy to look after the pilgrims. “The hiring process has started. We used to hire around 350 buildings. In 2011 we brought this number down to 180 buildings. The figure further came down to 140 the next year. This year we do not want to hire more than 100 buildings.

“The bigger the buildings and the closer they are to one another, the better we will be able to serve the pilgrims,” he said.

The minister said the mission will again be looking for buildings in Aziziah district in Makkah. That way they increase the number of buses ferrying pilgrims to and from the Haram mosque. It would help facilitate the pilgrims further, he added.

In reply to a question regarding pilgrims’ transportation services, Syed Abu Ahmed Akif, Director General Haj, Pakistan, said: “We hire the buses ourselves on a daily basis. We manage them ourselves. Two motorway officers, both in the rank of deputy inspector general, come from Pakistan and handle the bus movement.”

Talking about the tracking system, which was introduced last year, Akif said: “It was not successful.”

Pakistani pilgrims are issued tracking tags in addition to tags issued to them from Pakistan’s Ministry of Haj and their field office. Pakistani pilgrims were initially issued the tracking tags, but the authorities noted that most of the pilgrims were not wearing them and thus stopped issuing them.

“This year, however, the Haj Mission is working on ways to add the radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip into the main tag issued by the Ministry in Pakistan. This way the Haji will be have only one tag to wear,” the Haj Mission official added.

The visiting minister made it clear to the press that he is doing his utmost to make the 2013 Haj as comfortable for pilgrims as possible, but he will not be there to see the operations since his government’s mandate will expire mid-March.

We will make the policy and hand it over by mid-March, but a lot will depend on the interim set-up,” he added.

Tuesday 12 February 2013

Prince Sultan bin Salman, president of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities, yesterday announced SCTA’s plan to develop historical Islamic sites in the Kingdom, including those in Makkah and Madinah.

Addressing the First Conference of “Archaeology and Tourism in Al-Ula: Challenges and Aspirations,” he said the project would be carried out in consultation with Islamic scholars and archaeologists.

“A number of prominent Islamic scholars have expressed their desire to visit archaeological sites in the Kingdom and last week two members of the Council of Senior Islamic Scholars visited Madain Saleh in Al-Ula,” he said, adding that SCTA would encourage such visits.

Prince Sultan commended Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah and Crown Prince Salman for their support to SCTA’s efforts to preserve the Kingdom’s heritage sites.

“It has a cultural dimension as these heritage sites reflect the great contributions made by the people of Arabian Peninsula to human civilization over the years and the Kingdom’s heritage is part and parcel of world heritage,” the SCTA chief said.

The three-day conference at Taibah University’s Al-Ula campus is organized by the university in association with SCTA. Madinah Governor Prince Faisal bin Salman attended the opening session.

The conference aims at highlighting the cultural role of the people of Al-Ula, review appropriate means of preserving its cultural heritage and discuss practical experience and examples of sustainable development in archaeology and tourism, an SCTA official said.

Prince Sultan described Al-Ula as one of the important Islamic sites in the Kingdom. “We have signed an agreement with the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments to renovate historical mosques. We have already renovated an old mosque in Al-Ula.”

He said SCTA would work with the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques to preserve historical Islamic sites and museums under the presidency. He emphasized the cultural, archaeological and economic dimensions of the Kingdom’s tourism development strategy.

Prince Sultan disclosed plans to develop 120 archaeological sites, establish five regional and six local museums, develop existing museums and preserve the Islamic historical sites in Makkah and Madinah as well as those sites related to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Caliphs. “We’ll also transform historical palaces and government buildings into cultural centers.”
He said 24 scientific missions, including Saudi and foreign archaeologists, are working in different parts of the Kingdom to explore antiquities.

“We’ll work to enhance citizens’ relations with their heritage and include the topic in the curriculum, conduct national and international heritage exhibitions, encourage private museums and promote heritage villages,” he said while expressing satisfaction over the positive results of Saudi heritage exhibitions in Europe and the United States that attracted more than 1.5 million visitors including archaeologists.

Prince Sultan said SCTA was able to retrieve more than 14,000 pieces of antiques from abroad and 3,000 from inside the Kingdom with the support of government and private agencies. “Many citizens have handed over their artifacts to SCTA in order to take care of them properly,” he pointed out.

The SCTA chief commended Prince Abdul Aziz bin Majed, former governor of Madinah, for his support to the commission’s efforts to preserve historical sites in the region. He congratulated the new Governor Prince Faisal for winning the confidence of the Saudi leadership. “I wish him every success to serve the region as well as its citizens and visitors.”

Dr. Adnan Al-Mazroue, president of Taibah, emphasized the importance of protecting the Kingdom’s cultural heritage and archaeological sites. “Some of the archaeological sites in the Madinah region date back to the Stone Age,” the president said.

Salim Al-Bulwi, supervisor of Taibah University campus in Al-Ula, said 40 research papers would be presented by experts at eight sessions of the conference. The papers will focus on Al-Ula Antiquities and History, Cultural Heritage Resources Management, Urban Heritage and Tourism Development.

British family killed in Makkah

Three generations perish in crash, leaving behind a one-year-old

February 12, 2013

Five members of a British family were killed in a car crash while on pilgrimage in Makkah on Friday, leaving behind a one-year-old, British media reported.

Three generations of a Muslim Welsh family were in Saudi Arabia to make the minor pilgrimage, the Umrah, when the taxi they were traveling in hit a concrete bridge, somersaulted off the road and ended up in a ditch.

They were travelling to Jeddah to meet relatives four hours away, according to the South Wales Argus newspaper.

The victims have been named as Shaukat Ali Hayat, 56, a teacher, his wife Abida, 47, eldest son Mohammad Ishaq, 33, daughter Saira Zenub and Mohammad’s pregnant wife, Bilques, 31. Saira was due to be married this weekend.

shaq and Bilques’ son, one-year-old Mohammad Eisa Daniel, however, survived. He was found by the rescue team being cradled by his dying grandfather, Shaukat Ali. The toddler suffered a dislocated shoulder and a broken arm and ribs, said the paper.

Shaukat Ali’s brother Sma Hayat, 58, was quoted by The Mirror as saying: “He saw what happened as the car went out of control.

“He grabbed the baby, clutched him in his arms and cushioned him. His actions saved his life.

“The boy has lost everyone but luckily he has pulled through.”

The family had made the 4,800km trip to Makkah from their home in Newport, South Wales for the Umrah.

Saira Zenub was a pharmacist and Mohammad Ishaq was pursuing a PhD in neuroscience.

The five members of the family were buried in Jannat Al Baqi cemetery, according to British media. Twenty members of the family travelled for the funeral.

Newport West MP Paul Flynn told the BBC: “The city has immense respect for the Hayat family and there will be real grief in Newport tonight at these terrible tragedies that have happened.”

The family was also involved in charity work in and around Newport and in 2010 they helped raise funds for victims of flooding in Pakistan.

A UK Foreign Office spokesman said consular assistance was being provided to relatives.
