Expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque

14 November 2012 - 29 Thul-Hijjah 1433 H

In an exceptional session held last Saturday at the behest of King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, the Board of Senior Ulema unanimously approved the expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque from its northern side but rejected plans to expand the mosque from the southern side.

The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Ibrahim Al-Assaf and Sheikh Bakur Bin Laden.

Many citizens from Madinah and elsewhere in the Kingdom had sent letters to the King to inform him that any expansion from the southern side of the mosque would not have the desired benefits. The issue was then put before the Board of Senior Ulema, which after detailed discussions decided that the expansion should be from the northern side.

The new expansion plans had already been prepared. King Abdullah laid the foundation for the Prophet’s Mosque expansion on Sept. 24, 2012.

in initiative to be launched in Makkah

November 12, 2012

Riyadh: A charitable organisation in Saudi Arabia has announced an initiative to distribute braille versions of the Quran to blind people in the country and around the world.

The charitable organisation named Ibsar will soon undertake the mission to distribute braille copies of the Quran starting from Makkah, where it will be distributed to registered blind people who can read braille, according to the Al Sharq Al Awsat newspaper.

The second stage of the initiative will involve distributing copies of the Quran as far as the Al Aqsa mosque in occupied Jerusalem. This decision is consequent to a request from the mosque administration.

The head of Ibsar, Tawfiq Bulu, said the organisation currently has 507 registered members who can read braille, and 667 registered vision-impaired individuals who cannot read braille but can read regular text in enlarged fonts.

Hijrah calendar:

A landmark of the world history

Friday 16 November 2012 - 2 Muharram 1434 H

The word Hijrah, which stands for migration, is a full message of Islam in itself. It strikes the mind with several questions such as, who migrated; and when, where and why the migration took place. In brief, Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) migrated in September 622 CE from Makkah to Madinah to save and promote the Truth. Almighty Allah protected him against all dangers and brought him an era of great success. This was the reason that Umer ibn al Khattab, the second great Caliph, ordered this event to be taken as the starting point of the Hijrah calendar. There were other calendars that carried personal tags like names of Jesus Christ or Judah; birth or coronation of a king, or foundation of a city. But, Hijrah calendar is unique in its inception attracting humanity to inquire about Islam.

It was only six years after the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) that Caliph Umar in 17th AH consulted the learned and canonized the Year of Hijrah, as suggested by Ali Ibn Abi Talib, as the beginning of Islamic era. Uthman bin Affan suggested that the year might begin from the month of Muharram after Haj, which was approved. Thus the first year of Hijrah (1 AH) began from Muharram 1, corresponding to the 16th July 622 CE, a Friday.

The actual migration of the Prophet (peace be upon him) had taken place on 12th Rabi Al-Awal, 1 AH, corresponding to 24th Sept. 622CE.

Islam being the religion most suited to natural way of human life prescribed the cycle of recurring natural phenomena familiar to common man in his every day life for observance of Salat, Saum, Zakat and Hajj, and best suited to the people of every color, clime and the continent. The most obvious and most precise of these are the alteration of day and night and the changing phases of the moon.

As a matter of fact all the three religions — Judaism, Christianity and Islam — were prescribed with lunar calendars. Jewish calendar is still lunar and like Islamic calendar begins at preceding sunset. Christian calendar was lunar in the beginning, but later it was changed to a solar one. However few festivals such as Easter and Good Friday are still celebrated on lunar dates. The natural phenomenon of day and night is more acceptable to the common man than a.m. and p.m. As the moon appears in the night, the date in the Islamic (also in Jewish) calendar begins in the night and follows the day. It is not like the Gregorian calendar where the night is split into two halves.

Can someone believe that under the generally accepted solar calendar, the year 45BC was 445 day long? Or, in October 1582, people went to bed on the 4th and woke up on the 15th. This is what and much more than that happened all through the past centuries to readjust the solar calendar.

The well publicized Christian calendar was invented by Dionsius Exigus in CE532 presuming the birth of the Jesus Christ to be 1 CE. But later Biblical scholars declared that his calculation was wrong as Jesus Christ was born in BC 4 of the present calendar. Further, the Christian calendar was revised in CE1582 by Pope Gregory III, hence known as Gregorian calendar. France accepted this calendar in 1582 but Great Britain refused to do so resulting in two different dates prevailing in Europe up to 1752 when Britain accepted the Gregorian calendar and applied it in all its colonies in Asia, Africa and Americas. It was only 90 years before and after WWI that this calendar assumed an international status. Greece accepted it as late as 1923; and Turkey in 1927.

It was Islam that introduced for the first time a natural and truly international calendar. The Hijrah calendar canonized in AH17 (CE638), and within the first century Hijrah when Caliph Umer bin Abdul Aziz ruled at Damascus in 99AH, this calendar was used in Muslim territories of France, Spain, North Africa, the Middle East, Turkey, Iran, Chinese Turkistan and India. This gigantic region comprised more than half of the then known world.

Astronomically, we know that the moon revolves around the earth in 29 days 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.78 seconds. It completes 59 days in two lunations. The remaining fraction constitutes 11 days in 30 years. For a uniform Hijrah calendar, the first month is taken as 30 days and the second as 29 days totaling 59 days in two months and 354 days in a year. The extra 11 days are added as 30th Dhul-Hijja in 11 years numbering 2, 5, 7, 10, 13, 16, 18, 21, 24, 26, and 29 of a 30 year-cycle thus creating a perfect Hijrah calendar. This system has already been accepted by all Muslim and non Muslim astronomers, scholars, historians of the past and the present. It has been reiterated by Wustenfel Mahler of Germany, Mohammed Mukhtar Pasha and Ahmad Atiyatullah of Egypt, Habibur Rahman Sabri of India, Abdul Quddus Hashmi of Pakistan and Dr. Ibrahim Juma of Dar Malik Abdul Aziz of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Interestingly, the Gregorian calendar, which is based on Roman calendar, was lunar in the beginning, covering 304 days in 10 months and starting from March. Later Numa the second king of Rome (716-673 BC) added two months of January and February after December with a year comprising 355 days. By BC46, the Roman calendar was out of step with the seasons by about three months. In BC45, Julius Caesar on the advice of Egyptian astronomer Sosigenes started a new calendar in 709 year of Rome after his name as Julian calendar.

In order to adjust the calendar, he inserted 67 days between November and December, thus making that year 445 days in length. He abolished lunar calendar and decreed the regulation on the basis of solar calendar. The year was to begin on Jan. 1, and not on March 1. Further, every fourth year was decreed to be leap year of 366 days by inserting a day between Feb. 23 and Feb. 24. In 44BC, the month Qintilis was renamed July as a memorial to Julius Caesar. In BC7, Octavius, who took the title of Augustus Caesar and ruled Rome from BC27-CE14 to adjust the mishandling of the leap years during the past 38 years, lengthened the month Sextilis and had it renamed in his honor as Augustus.

Again in 15th century Pope Gregory XIII approached the government of the principal states of the Roman Empire and after their agreement issued a brief in March 1582 promulgating the Gregorian calendar and directing the day following the feast of St. Francis on Oct. 5, should be reckoned as October 15 and that no century year should be counted as leap year unless it was exactly divisible by 400. France, Switzerland, Italy, Portugal, Poland, the Netherlands and Catholic parts of Germany adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1582. Protestant did not accept it until 1700, Sweden in 1753, Japan in 1873, China and Albania in 1912, Soviet Russia in 1918, Rumania in 1919 Greece in 1923 and Turkey in 1927.

Britain approved Gregorian calendar in 1752 and added 11 days in September 1752. It was declared that the day following Sept. 2, should be termed Sept. 14, 1752 and that from then on, the year was to begin on Jan. 1 and not on March 25 as earlier. The same year, Britain imposed the Gregorian calendar in all its colonies including America. All dates preceding Sept. 2, were marked as OS or old style. George Washington was actually born on Feb. 11, 1732 OS and after 1752 his birth day fell on Feb. 22 under the Gregorian era.

The Hijrah Islamic calendar had no intercalation or extra-calation during the last 1400 years. Further it does not suffer from the lacuna of being subordinate to the seasonal equinox. Subsequently, the Muslim festivals rotate through all the seasons of the year – a fact which lends a unique charm to them for all the people of the globe whether they inhabit the northern or the southern hemisphere. It is not like the icy cold Christmas in the north fixed every year on 25th Dec. while it is boiling hot in South Africa and Australia. The event of Hijrah stands as the seed of entire Islamic history, which is most important part of the world history.

Expansion to triple ''Mataf'' capacity

Tower cranes are being set up outside the Grand Mosque
as work for the mataf expansion began on Thursday.

16 November 2012 - 02 Muharram 1434 H

MAKKAH — Construction work on the expansion of the mataf (the area where pilgrims circle around the Holy Ka’aba as part of the tawaf ritual) in the Grand Mosque started Thursday.

The engineers overseeing the project gave the go-ahead to set up the two largest tower cranes ever built in the 21st century in the eastern and western parts of the mosque.

The cranes will be used for the construction work.

The contractor requested the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques to evacuate a number of offices in the Grand Mosque including the preachers’ offices and those housing security forces.

The expansion ordered by King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, aims to end overcrowding in the mataf.

Muhammad Abdullah Idris, Deputy President of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Haj Research Institute in Makkah, suggested the expansion in a study he conducted.

The expansion has been designed in a way to preserve the Islamic identity and character of the Grand Mosque and the mataf in particular.

The project will separate the mataf from the prayer areas and link it to various floors, significantly easing the flow of worshippers as they enter and leave the tawaf area.

The study also suggests the tawaf and the masa’a (where pilgrims perform the ritual run between Safa and Marwah) areas be provided with cable car services linking the Grand Mosque with three areas of the holy city to reduce congestion during the peak Haj and Umrah seasons.

The study recommends cable cars mainly for elderly pilgrims and those with special needs.

The expansion project will result in the mataf’s capacity being increased to accommodate 130,000 tawaf performers per hour across all floors instead of the current capacity of 52,000.

The project includes the first floor being allocated for physically handicapped worshippers and will be connected to elevators and escalators.

This floor will also be connected to the masa’a.

Work on Mataf expansion begins

More than two million Muslim faithful attended taraweeh and qiyamullail prayers
at the Grand Mosque last Ramadan.

Friday 16 November 2012

MAKKAH: Preliminary work for the expansion of the mataf (the circumambulation area around the Kaaba) started yesterday with the installation of huge cranes at the northeastern courtyard of the Grand Mosque. The contractor undertaking the expansion has sought the evacuation of preachers’ offices in the mataf and the command office of the Haram Security forces close to Al-Safa Gate.

The expansion is being undertaken on the basis of a study prepared by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Haj and Umrah Studies.
The study focuses on using the available space and potential of the mataf to the maximum while maintaining the architectural features of the Grand Mosque using advanced technology.

According to the study, the mataf will be separated from prayer areas and it will be linked to different floors of the mosque and facilitate entrance to and exit from the mataf. It will also takes care of the crowding at the entrances to the mataf and nearby passages and will also give direct access from the mataf to the masaa.

The mataf on the second and third floors will have cable cars to carry aged and disabled pilgrims and there will be direct access to these floors from outside. The topmost floor of the mataf will have automated walkway revolving around the Kaaba.

The study said the original mataf is a circle with a diameter of 95 meters.

Currently the capacity of the mataf is 28,000 pilgrims in an hour or four persons in a square meter area, though at peak days it rises to 40,000 people or six people in a square meter in an hour.

Muhammad Idris, who prepared the study, said the first Saudi expansion of the facility was undertaken 60 years ago and then roof was not made for prayers.

He said factors such as the change in the level of ground water and impact of salt on the foundation and the shaking caused by the rock blasts for the nearby projects are affecting the mosque building’s strength.

The study said many efforts have been made to strengthen the pillars of the building. The new project will also take steps to make the building tremor proof.

Authorities have made it clear that the new works will not affect the upcoming Umrah season.

Qiblatain Mosque visited by pilgrims

Masjid al-Qiblatain Mosque

Masjid al-Qiblatain (المسجد القبلتین) (Mosque of the two Qiblas) is a mosque in Medina that is historically important for Muslims as the place where the Islamic prophet Muhammad, leading the prayer, is said to have been commanded to change the direction of prayer (qibla) from Jerusalem to Mecca. Thus it uniquely contained two prayer niches (mihrabs). Recently the mosque was renovated, removing the old prayer niche facing Jerusalem and leaving the one facing Mecca.

The Qiblatain Mosque is among the three earliest mosques in Islam's history, along with Quba Mosque and Al-Masjid al-Nabawi.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masjid_al-Qiblatain

The mihrab wall

The inscriptions along the outside are from Verses 133 & 134 of Chapter 3 and read:

"Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a Garden whose width is that of the heavens and of the earth, prepared for the righteous, — Those who spend, whether in prosperity, or in adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon people; for Allah loves those who do good."

The verses across the top of the arches have special significance, given that it is the revelation that changed the prayer direction. It reads:

"Indeed We see the turning of your face to heaven (for guidance), so We shall surely turn you to a Qiblah which is dear to you; turn then your face towards the Sacred Mosque." (2:144)

This commandment came while the Prophet was leading prayer. For the first two rakah, the congregation was facing Jerusalem. Upon receiving this revelation midway through the prayer, the Prophet turned 180º to face Mecca and completed the remaining two rakah.

Indonesian pilgrims

flood Corniche in post-Haj visit

Saturday 17 November 2012

The Red Sea coastline here is flooded with visiting foreign Haj pilgrims for sightseeing.

Foreign Haj pilgrims, especially Indonesians, say are keen to visit various parts of Jeddah in general and Corniche in particular. Most of Indonesian pilgrims pay an additional SR. 400 to SR 600 depending upon class of tour operator, who arranges Haj visit and visits to various renowned monuments of Jeddah city is included in the package.

However, the visits are largely confined only to shopping in downtown, Balad and Fatimah Zahra mosque at the Corniche, which is commonly known as floating mosque.

Indonesia largely comprises islands amid of shores, yet Indonesian men and women opt to spend long hours at shores of Red Sea. There are approximately 1,400 mosques in Jeddah and four mosques are located at north side of Corniche.

Among the all visitors at the site it’s Indonesians who are in vast majority over there and can be find sitting on sand at down side the mosque and upper levels besides adjacent footpaths and sitting areas. Barely any space left to other than Indonesian visitors.

Almost every Indonesian visitor wants to capture the scenes surrounding areas through their cameras and mobile phones. Some prior but many come after the Haj. Indonesian pilgrims start to arrive from morning and stay until sunset.

The prime cause behind such heavy rush from Indonesian pilgrims is that many pilgrims believe that Fatima Zahra mosque is built on the spot of grave of Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Several Indonesian expatriates are selling their ethnic food and some herbs to their countrymen and women. Surrounding area is filled with odor of ethnic Indonesian food prepared by some expats on the site in hazardous conditions. Some Indonesian photographers with instant Polaroid cameras are busy taking snaps of visitors for SR 10.

In downtown, Balad area’s Corniche commercial center also one of the preferred area of visiting Indonesian pilgrims. A four-star hotel inside the Balad area is largely occupied with Indonesian visitors in the post-Haj period.
The cemetery of Hawa also an important attraction to Indonesians as they believe this is the grave of mother Hawa, first woman on the earth, although Islamic scholars repeatedly insist that Hawa grave does not exist in the cemetery. Nearby, Juffali Mosque is also often visited by pilgrims from Indonesia as part of their tour package.

Among the global Haj pilgrims, Indonesians has unique pattern to visit Jeddah apart of two holy cities in Kingdom.

Number of Egyptian

overstayers hits 700

Thursday 15 November 2012

JEDDAH: The number of Egyptian pilgrims who have overstayed their Umrah visas has grown to about 700 over the past few days. This figure includes children. This number has not been officially confirmed though.

In an attempt to get repatriated, the pilgrims have been sitting in front of the Egyptian Consulate in Jeddah and have now occupied private residential buildings in the vicinity.

Most of them are now experiencing difficulty as water and food supplies are low and they have resorted to sleeping on the street.

In September, 300 Egyptian visa overstayers were granted repatriation. Saudi immigration has since been less lenient.

These men and women had arrived earlier in the year on Umrah visas and had since stayed on illegally to wait for the Haj season.

Most of these pilgrims do not have their original passports, which are believed to be in the possession of travel operators. Repatriation by the Egyptian consulate would possibly let them bypass any penalties.
Egyptian Consul General Adel Al-Elfy and other high-ranking officials are monitoring the situation and insist that the pilgrims should respect the law and follow the immigration procedure of the Kingdom.

Around 80,000 Haj visas were issued to Egyptian pilgrims this year.

Shoura to tackle problem

of 5 million illegals in Kingdom

Foreigners have either overstayed their Haj and Umrah visas

or entered the Kingdom illegally

Sunday 11 November 2012

There are about five million illegal expatriates in the Kingdom who are, according to police reports, allegedly behind 60 percent crimes in the country.

The Shoura Council will discuss the issue of growing illegal expatriates during a regular session next week, press reports said.

Most of these undocumented foreigners have either overstayed their Haj and Umrah visas or entered the Kingdom illegally.

The Foreign Affairs Committee at the consultative body has called for a quick solution to illegal aliens who live mainly in Makkah, Jeddah, Taif, Madinah, Yanbu, Riyadh, and the Eastern and southern provinces.

The Shoura panel proposed the formation of a committee comprising representatives from the ministries of foreign and interior to send illegals back to their home countries in coordination with their embassies.

It also called for intensifying measures to prevent illegals from remaining in the country as they form a big threat to the Kingdom’s security. The report referred to increasing crimes among the Burmese community in the Kingdom.
