(MENAFN - Jordan Times) His Majesty King Abdullah on Tuesday inaugurated the Prophet Mohammad Museum at the King Hussein Mosque.

The King toured the facility, where some of the prophet's belongings were on display, including a single hair from his beard and his letter to the Byzantine emperor of Eastern Roman Empire, in which he urged him to covert to Islam, a Royal Court statement said.

The museum also includes a sapling of the tree under which Prophet Mohammad rested on his way to the Levant for trade in the pre-Islam era. The tree is located in the badia region.

HRH Prince Ghazi, chief adviser to the King for religious and cultural affairs and the King's personal envoy, also attended the inauguration ceremony along with Royal Court Chief Riyad Abu Karaki, Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Abdul Salam Abbadi and other senior officials and officers.

Speaking to the Jordan News Agency, Petra, Abbadi said the museum's belongings hold significant value in the history of Islam.

"The concerned authorities in Jordan will work to bring more of the prophet's belongings to the museum," the minister said.

The museum's design is inspired by Islamic architecture through its domes, arches and the murals and etchings of Koranic verses, King Hussein Mosque's Imam Ghaleb Rababaa told Petra.

Al-Azhar Ulama Call On Iran To Stop Film On Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 (Bernama)

The ulama (Islamic scholars) at the Al-Azhar University in Egypt have called on Iran to stop the ongoing production of a film on Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), saying that such a production is haram.

According to Jordan news agency, Fact International's website www.factjo.com, the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Ahmad Al-Tayeb, said that Al-Azhar ulama and followers of Sunnah Wal Jamaah (Sunnis) had rejected the production of the film, which was being produced by an Iranian filmmaker.

"It is clearly an irresponsible act, just liketheonecommitted by the western countries when they produced images insulting the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)," Ahmad was quoted as saying.

The film is said to be focusing on Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) lifefrom childhood to prophethood.

Meanwhile, Al-Azhar Advisor, DrHassan Al-Shafie, was reported by Egypt's daily, Al-Ahram, as saying that the production of the film would affect the faith of Muslims across the world.

Shariah violation

Pakistan Govt paid fine for ex-PM's Umrah faux pas

Official documents reveal that former premier Shaukat Aziz and his entire 50-member delegation violated
a Shariah tenet while circumambulating the Kaabah during their Umrah in 2007.

ISLAMABAD: May 17, 2012

Pakistan's mission in Jeddah had to pay 19,500 riyals (Rs472,660) in religious fine to the Saudi Arabian authorities in 2007 because then-prime minister and his elaborate entourage had violated a basic and widely-known Shariah condition while performing Umrah, The Express Tribune has learnt.

According to Islamic Shariah, it is mandatory for every male intending pilgrim to wear Ahram (traditional white, unstitched robe consisting of two sheets) before entering the geographical limits of Meeqat, Kaabah, while performing Umrah.

However, if a pilgrim performs Umrah, and does Tawaf-e-Kaabah (circumambulation of the Kaabah) without wearing Ahram after crossing into Meeqat, will be liable to slaughter a goat or pay its price to the poor as fine (damm).

Official documents reveal that former premier Shaukat Aziz and his entire 50-member delegation violated this Shariah tenet while circumambulating the Kaabah during their Umrah in 2007.

While performing Umrah, it's mandatory for the pilgrims to circumabulate the Kaabah seven times anti-clockwise.

Ironically, neither Premier Aziz nor any member of his delegation knew about the Ahram condition and were hence fined for violating the Shariah tenet.

The auditor general of Pakistan (AGP), in his report for 2008-09, raised objection to the payment of 19,500 riyals from the public exchequer for the religious mistake of Premier Aziz and his delegation.

The report says that Pakistan's Consulate General in Jeddah, in violation of rules, also spent around 34,354 riyals on the purchase of Ahrams, costly dates (Ajwa) and Aab-e-Zam Zam for the premier and his delegation as a gift.

The AGP recommended to the ministry of foreign affairs to recover the amount from those officials who spent the public money without any authorisation.

Sources, however, say that the foreign ministry is still squabbling over the mode of recovering the money from the officials. Some officials believe that the amount should be recovered from Aziz and his delegation members.

Temperature rises as hot easterly wind blows across Makkah areas

Jeddah: Badr Alqahtani

Wednesday 23 May 2012

.The western region of the Kingdom experienced searing heat yesterday, with Jeddah witnessing dust storms and scorching heat.

Makkah province witnessed soaring temperatures that reached 46 degrees Celsius, according to Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) spokesman Hussien Al-Qahtani. He said easterly winds contributed to the rise in temperatures.

Al-Qahtani estimated that today's temperatures would return to the more normal range of 40 to 43 degrees, but warned of a continuance of hot weather in Jeddah and the eastern and central parts of the Kingdom. The PME also forecast that this morning's weather would be dusty, as northeasterly winds bring dust storms. Yesterday the wind blew at a speed of 15 to 38 km/h northwesterly to westerly. The temperature at noontime reached 45 degrees with 80 percent humidity, with visibility being reduced in certain areas to 5 km.

According to PME continuous wind activity raised dust and reduced visibility in Najran, and parts of the southwest and west of the Kingdom including Makkah, Madinah highways and coastal areas.

"What made people feel the heat yesterday was due to the hot air not the temperature. However, people differ in terms of feeling the heat as those who are overweight, for instance, are affected by high temperatures more than others, as are people suffering from diabetes," Al-Qahtani told Arab News.

"The type of clothes one is wearing also makes a difference in the heat," he said, adding summer began May 20 and people can expect temperatures to average between 37 and 49 degrees. Dr. Sami Badawoud, Jeddah's Health Affairs director, told Arab News the ministry's hospitals emergency rooms did not record any increase in the number of patients. Badawoud, however, advised people, especially children and the elderly, to drink more fluids, and called for workers not to work directly under the sun and take a break at least once every three hours.

- Fouzia Khan contributed to the report.

Qibla from Sun

The sun will be above the Kaaba Sunday

Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah

capital of Islamic culture

Governor of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah Region underscores the importance of highlighting
the occasion of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah as capital of Islamic culture ( SPA )7/7/1433 H4

Islamic Cultural Capitals

Every year a handful of cities across the Islamic world are chosen to be Islamic Cultural Capitals; cities which are emblematic of the best that contemporary and traditional Islamic culture has to offer.

The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO), based in Rabat, Morocco, has the ambitious plan of strengthening, promoting and consolidating cooperation between the member states, through education and scientific projects. One such project is the naming of three or four cities each year as Islamic Culture Capitals; one each in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. It gives the cities an opportunity to develop their architectural and cultural assets, with the view of educating the people about the importance of history in their region.

The cities chosen for 2012 are: Najaf, Iraq; Dhaka, Bangladesh; Niamey, Niger.

In 2013 the cities are: Tripoli, Lebanon; Al-Madinah al-Munawarah, Saudi Arabia; Ghazni, Afghanistan; Kano, Nigeria.

Swissotel Makkah to open at start of Ramadan

The Swissotel Makkah, Saudi Arabia’s largest hotel and the Zurich-based hotelier’s first property in the Middle East, is due to open on the first day of Ramadan this year, it was announced on Sunday.

The 1487-room hotel will offer views of the Grand Mosque and the Holy Kaaba and is due to open in July, when the Islamic holy month begins.

"With the most convenient location in the holy city of Makkah, we anticipate Swissotel Makkah to be the preferred destination not only for pilgrims and Umra performers but also for business travellers, who will be visiting the holy city of Makkah," said Mohammed Arkobi, vice president and managing director of Fairmont Raffles Hotels International Makkah, Swissotel’s Canada-based parent company.

Facilities in the hotel will include 352 triple-bed rooms and 22 disabled-friendly rooms.

Fairmont Hotels and Resorts plans as many as 12 hotels in Saudi Arabia in the next three to four years, requiring up to 10,000 additional employees, the chain’s vice president in the country said in May.

The US hotelier, which in April announced plans to build its fourth property in the kingdom, plans to tap into rising demand for luxury travel in the Gulf’s wealthiest economy.

“It is our plan to expand in all major cities in Saudi Arabia,” Arkobi, vice president for Fairmont in Saudi Arabia, told Arabian Business during April's Arabian Travel Market event in Dubai.

“Each major city can accommodate all three brands but it depends on the market. In my opinion within three to four years we’ll have around 12 hotels. Maybe we’ll need another 10,000 staff.”

Saudi’s cities play host to millions of religious tourists each year, who flock to the kingdom to undertake the pilgrimages hajj and umrah. The number of pilgrims entering the kingdom is expected to grow to almost 14m by the end of the decade.

Hoteliers Hilton Worldwide, Marriott International and Hyatt International have signed deals to operate 12 properties in Makkah, as part of a US$5.5bn mega-project in the city.

Saudi Arabia’s tourism market has also largely sidestepped any impact from the widespread political unrest in the Middle East, Arkobi said.

Fairmont operates two hotels in the kingdom, the Raffles Makkah Palace and the Makkah Clock Royal Tower, which opened in September.

“During the last ten months, we have had an average occupancy rate of almost 60%, and during weekends we have often had 100% occupancy,” Arkobi said. “This is a big achievement for a new hotel, especially in a seasonal market.”

MAKKAH — Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Emir of Makkah region, Monday signed two contracts worth SR1.9 billion to construct new roads, bridges and tunnels in Makkah.

The contracts, part of the King Abdullah Construction Project for Makkah, were signed with Saudi Binladen Group which has been given 36 months to complete the projects.

The first contract focuses on the remaining parts of the second ring road while the second covers the third phase of the third ring road in the holy city. For the second ring road project, Al-Nakasa Bridge in Al-Kakiya District will be extended while new bridges will be erected at Al-Tandabawee and Al-Biban districts. The total cost of the project is SR460 million. Compensation for about 1038 acquired properties will reach SR8 billion.

For the third ring road project, bridges and tunnels will be constructed in different areas including Al-Jamarat Square located between Prince Majed Street and King Fahd Road. Al-Haj Street will be extended from both sides.

Hajj Gets Smart App

AMIR Personal Haj & Umrah Assistant

27 May 2012

BERLIN – A German Muslim computer scientist has developed a new smartphone application to help millions of pilgrims to find their way in the holy city of Makkah for hajj and `Umrah.

“I thought it would be interesting if I could have had a navigation device that could also be a religious guide,” Habiburrahman Dastageeri, a graduate from computer science department in Stuttgart University, told GlobalPost on Sunday, May 27.

Dastageeri got the idea for the smartphone application while visiting the holy city of Makkah in 2006 with his family to perform `Umrah.

Performing the different rituals of `Umrah, he found it difficult to find his way back to his accommodation.

In hajj, the process is even more complicated.

Moving from Makkah to Mena tent city, Dastageeri said a plethora of similar-looking hotels have led some people to go lost for up to three days as they try to find their way back to their accommodation.

The 32-year-old, who was born in Mainz after his parents immigrated to Germany from Afghanistan, decided to develop a new application to help Muslim pilgrims.

“I realized that it was not as easy as I had imagined,” he said.

“Of course my family and I had prepared, but when I was there, I saw that there was a lot that we just couldn’t have known.”

He soon embarked on a Masters program, deciding to develop a prototype GPS system for hajj.

It took over two years to develop the “Amir” app, named for the Arabic word for guide.

The step-by-step guide helps pilgrims prepare, with a checklist and interactive tutorials, how to perform the rituals.

Once they are in Makkah, the GPS navigation system comes into play.

The app helps pilgrims find the exact pilgrimage sites as well as how to get back to their tent or hotel room, and other meeting points.

“The first big challenge for a pilgrim is to know what, when and where the rituals have to be performed” Dastageeri told GlobalPost.

“These are not part of everyday life for most people. They would not have practiced them before at home.”

Religiously Fit

The young German Muslim has consulted with an Australia-based Muslim scholar, Abu Muneer Ismail Davids, who has written numerous books on the hajj, about the new app.

“It was really important that there would be neither religious nor technological mistakes,” Dastageeri said.

Finishing the hajj iPhone app, it is now available in Turkish, English, Arabic and German so far, and Dastageeri plans to translate it into other languages soon.

He is also working on an Android version.

The young German Muslim also travelled to Saudi Arabia as part of a business delegation with the finance minister of Baden-Württember state, and held talks with officials about how the app could be utilized in the organization of the hajj.

For Dastageeri, the chance to combine his tech skills and his religious beliefs was the main attraction in developing the app.

“As a computer scientist, you learn to find solutions to known problems, and the hajj has existed for 1,400 years.

“With these new possibilities we can now significantly simplify the hajj, and also help many people. That was my motivation from the start.”

Muslims from around the world pour into Makkah every year to perform hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam.

Hajj consists of several ceremonies, which are meant to symbolize the essential concepts of the Islamic faith, and to commemorate the trials of Prophet Abraham and his family.

Every able-bodied adult Muslim who can financially afford the trip must perform hajj at least once in a lifetime.
