Makkah cemeteries to get a facelift

Cemetery Jannatul Mualla, Makkah

By ARAB NEWS

Published: Feb 4, 2012 02:39 Updated: Feb 4, 2012 02:39

MAKKAH: Makkah municipality has started implementing a major project to give two famous cemeteries — Mualla and Al-Sharaie — a facelift.

The municipality awarded the project to refurbish and construct new walls around the cemeteries to a Saudi company, which started work Thursday. The project is estimated to cost SR5.63 million, Al-Watan Arabic daily reported Friday.

Abdullah Aqeel, director of the department for furnishing at the municipality, said that the two cemeteries are being refurbished in a way in order to make them major landmarks in the holy city. “Demolition works of old walls of Mualla Cemetery, which is popularly known as Jannatul Mualla, are under way. A strong new wall similar to that of the Baqie Cemetery in Madinah would be constructed around Mualla, which is close to the northern courtyard of the Grand Mosque,” he said.

According to Aqeel, cemeteries of Mualla and Al-Sharaie would get new walls surrounding them on all four directions. “The walls would have the hallmark of the Islamic architectural design. Visitors of graves will be prevented from committing any violations of the Islamic Shariah regulations,” he said.

Saudia issues 34-point Umrah plan

January 24, 2012

LAHORE, Jan 23: The Saudi Arabian Haj ministry’s Agency for Umrah Services has chalked out a 34-point strategy for the Umrah season this year.

The plan would formally be launched on the first of Rabiul Awwal (Jan 25) and comprise a package focusing on upgrading the standard of services, the religious affairs ministry announced on Monday.

The services would include reception of Umrah pilgrims at the entry points, specified seaports and airports, their transportation, accommodation and departure, the ministry added.

The Saudi agency has stressed that pilgrims should not be kept waiting in buses for more than 30 minutes while warning them not to squat or sleep at airport lounges or on the floor of hotels and residential buildings allocated to accommodate them.

Only pilgrims having valid (confirmed) return tickets would be allowed to go for Umrah this year, it said.

The Saudi Arabian government has taken the step to avoid rush of pilgrims at its airports at the commencement of Umrah season from Jan 24.

A record 4.7 million pilgrims will perform Umrah this year from all over the world, said the announcement.

again jzk. brill updates.

am i the only one who thinks the new makkah extension looks very odd - it looks like another masjid's next door the current haram? the design i thought would be most future proof was the design where they constructed a circle shape in that new part and could have easily added to it in future decades which wouldve eventually led to a fully round/circle shape of the masjid (with the palace taken out and safa-marwa included within the circular shape)

Yes, they are the same from different angles.

However, notice the number of floors. It could be that the will go ahead with the expansion of the extra Tawaf floors as well as a mobile Mataf.

And yes it is an alien design. The Bin Laden Design was much better and realistic.

The other circular design may have to wait a few more decades, maybe even a century.

When I said centuries, I really meant it. This is a long shot, but can you imagine the beauty of it. No skyscarpers!

Question would be, Where would we stay. Under ground hotels! Not a bad idea, we could just take a lift into the Haram.

Any opinions?

4,700 arrive as Umrah season begins

By ARAB NEWS

Published: Feb 8, 2012 02:25 Updated: Feb 8, 2012 02:25

JEDDAH: More than 4,700 pilgrims on 19 flights arrived at the King Abdul Aziz International Airport (KAIA) in Jeddah on the fist day of the 2012 Umrah season at the Haj terminal on Tuesday.

The pilgrims were mainly from Turkey, Algeria and Iraq, the Saudi Press Agency reported. The General Authority for Civil Aviation said the KAIA administration has done all needed work in collaboration with government departments and operations agencies at the airport to handle the pilgrims smoothly.

Eight counters at the Haj terminal have been set up for incoming pilgrims and five for outgoing pilgrims and one counter as a reserve counter with facility for various operations, director general of the airport Abdul Hamid Abul Ora said.

Punishment for thieves of Haram steel upheld

By ARAB NEWS

Published: Feb 8, 2012 02:24 Updated: Feb 8, 2012 02:24

MAKKAH: The Court of Appeal in Makkah rejected a plea by two men convicted of stealing steel. The metal was being used for the expansion of the Masaa - the stretch between the mounts of Safa and Marwa in the Grand Mosque.

Informed sources told Arab News that the court saw no reason for a retrial, since the crime was sacrilegious against the House of God - Islam's most sacred shrine.

"Anyone who dares commit such a heinous crime should be severely punished to deter other people from ever daring to do such a thing," the court said.

It considered the rulings issued by a general court to be final and never to be appealed. The court sentenced three members of the gang to 10 months imprisonment and 200 lashes each.

The court did not reveal the exact number of thieves, but said the rest of them were currently being tried.

The thieves - civilians including government employees - were accused of stealing steel worth more than SR25 million about three years ago. The case soon became a matter of public interest.

The charges against them are forging official documents, receiving unlawful amounts of money, enabling an Indian accomplice to travel outside the Kingdom, stealing quantities of iron bars owned by the municipality in Muzdalifah and others.

The attorney general presented more than 20 pieces of evidence to incriminate the accused. These included their own confessions, authenticated by a Shariah court, a forensic report, false contracts, checks, rent contracts among others.

The attorney general called for harsh punitive measures against the accused.

Infrastructure to serve 10m pilgrims soon, says Khaled

8 February 2012

EDDAH - Infrastructure in the holy city of Makkah will be developed soon to serve an estimated ten million pilgrims, Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Emir of Makkah region, has said.

Speaking at an event titled "Shared responsibility dialogue" at Okaz headquarters here Tuesday, Prince Khaled said that the ongoing expansion of the Grand Mosque and its ritual sites would help pilgrims carry out their rites in ease and comfort.

Prince Khaled applauded the major role played by the print media in transforming society from simple to civilized. "Right from the establishment of Saudi Arabia, the media, especially the print media, has played a major role in ensuring the continued stability and unity of our nation," he said.

"We have moved from being illiterates to a nation of academics. We have given emphasis to research and studies and have achieved distinction in advanced studies and won world recognition. This progress could not have been achieved without the solidarity of the leadership and citizens," the Emir said in his opening remarks.

In Makkah, the Emir said, public transport will include light transport, buses and trains and metros in addition to easy to walk pathways leading to the Holy Mosque. Apart from this, the Haramain Train project will connect the two holy cities and pass through Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City in Rabegh, he said.

Talking about development projects in Jeddah, the Emir said several projects in the city have either been completed or are near completion.

The most important projects to save the city from floods have been completed ahead of schedule, he said.

"We have achieved plenty in Jeddah; many projects have been completed on time, others are on schedule... a sewage water system covers most parts of the city; the immediate projects of rain and flood water have been completed ahead of schedule; the removal of urban and industrial waste has achieved more than 85 percent of its target; the pollution cloud engulfing Jeddah is gone and the sewage water reservoir east of Jeddah (Misk Lake) is gone for good, he said.

East Jeddah will have one of the Kingdom's largest national parks, and a new ring road will connect the airport to Makkah without going through Jeddah, he said.

Four other major road projects will be merged into one and will be announced soon, he added.

Talking about the issue of unplanned districts, the Emir said ramshackle and old areas of the city will soon be modified and urbanized.

Regarding projects in Taif, Prince Khaled said the summer resorts of Al-Hada and Al-Shifa will be modernized and the traditional Souq Okaz will be refurbished.

The technology valley project, the improvement of public transport infrastructure and several building projects proposed by four ministerial committees are also on the cards, the Emir noted.
