By ARAB NEWS

Published: Sep 2, 2011 00:11 Updated: Sep 2, 2011 00:11

MAKKAH: On Wednesday and Thursday evenings, Makkah residents were treated to a performance by a Chinese circus. The shows, which were held in the holy city for the first time, will conclude Friday.

The circus put on its performances at Al-Wehdah Sports Club's theater located in Al-Taneem district.

This is outside the boundaries of the holy precincts, so there was no issue in inviting non-Muslim performers. Under Islamic law, non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the holy city.

The acrobatic featsin the circus were performed by 20 young Chinese men, whose strength, flexibility and precision dazzled the audience - young and old alike.

Eid celebrations were also held in other locations, including the car park on the Makkah-Jeddah Expressway.

More than 10,000 spectators attended the celebrations in which folklore troupes from Egypt, Yemen and Syria presented their traditional cultural dances.

Special programs, including competitions for children, were also held during which giftsweredistributed.

The Aziziyah municipality hosted folklore dances and special entertainment programs for children at Al-Hussainiyah park near King Abdullah MedicalCityWednesday evening. Other branch municipalities organized events in their respective areas.

Makkah imams prolonging prayers taken to task

By ARAB NEWS

Published: Sep 3, 2011 23:40 Updated: Sep 3, 2011 23:40

MAKKAH: The acting director of a branch of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs Endowments,Call and Guidance in Makkah province, Bakr bin Hamid Mir, has criticized the prolonging of prayer in Makkah mosques and said the imams have been advised not to do so.

In a statement published Saturday by Al-Madinah Arabic daily, the official also said the ministry has noted that some loudspeakers were not closed while the sermons were being delivered and lessons being imparted during the holy month of Ramadan. “The ministry will direct these mosques to comply with the rules.”

He said the remarks and observations of the ministry were conveyed to imams and khatibs of mosques in the holy city.

Mir said when the ministry receives complaints that the sound from the a mosque’s loudspeakers is extremely loud, it will send its technicians to adjust the sound system.

“There have been some complaints from people living near mosques about the loudness and on occasions the lack of volume of the speakers from the mosques. In many cases, the sound is normal and the complaints are unjustified. But if it is blaring, then it is regulated. When the sound is low, we receive complaints that people cannot hear clearly, then we tell the imams to fine-tune the sound so as to help people hear the call to prayer,” he said.

According to the acting director, there are 1,400 government-run and 500 privately-funded mosques in Makkah. The ministry supervises the private mosques.

Umrah package rates coming back to normal

4 September 2011

RIYADH — The round-trip Umrah package rates are coming back to normal after recording an all-time high of SR300 and above during the last 10 days of holy month of Ramadan.

Currently, the Umrah rates that include to and fro transport from Riyadh and hotel accommodation in the holy cities dropped to SR100 for a three-day package tour. The operators are charging SR150 for a five-day package for a round-trip to Makkah and Madina from Riyadh.

However, the package rates are yet to come back to the normal SR90 for a three-day tour to Makkah and Madina and SR130 for a five-day trip. According to tour operators the Umrah rates will drop to the normal level when schools reopen next week after the long summer vacation.

Muhammad Abdu of Shawkani for Haj and Umrah said a large number of people are staying in the two holy cities and waiting for schools to reopen. “The people will start leaving the two holy cities by this weekend, as the schools will reopen from Saturday,” said Abdu.

Umrah tour operators had a hectic activity during the last 10 days of Ramadan, when the demand from people opting to spend their time in the two holy cities increased substantially.

The Umrah rates from Riyadh to Makkah and Madina had touched all-time high of SR300 for a three-day package tour.

According to Haj and Umrah tour operators the huge demand from prospective Umrah pilgrims pushed the round-trip rates.

Many tour operators have stopped taking bookings after the end of Ramadan, because of the drop in demand. A large number of offices of Umrah operators were seen closed, an obvious sign of drop in demand from Umrah pilgrims. The operators that started taking bookings for a three-day will start package trip from this Wednesday.

According to Umrah companies some tens of thousands of people from Riyadh traveled to Makkah and Madina during Ramadan.

The demand from intending pilgrims declined during the first week of Shawwal, they said.

Egypt religious authority: Eid crescent sighting was correct

31 August 2011

Suspicion by the Jedda Astronomy Society regarding the sight of the Eid crescent in Saudi Arabia has raised doubts in several Islamic countries as to whether the holiday was pronounced at the right time.

The society had said that people actually saw the planetSaturn and not the crescent moon that marks the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal.

The Egyptian Fatwa Authority, however, has confirmed that the sighting in Egypt was 100 percent correct.

"The crescent was clearly seen with the naked eye in Toshkaand Sohag," said Ashraf Fahmy, the official responsible for determining the beginnings of the Islamic lunar months.

"There are seven committees made up of the finest astronomers that view the crescent in Helwan, 6th of October City, Sohag, Toshka,Moqattam,Aswan and New Valley," he explained. "And they coordinate with each other before they take a collectivedecision, soasto avoid error."

Grand Mufti Nasr Farid Wasel has also confirmed that the sighting was correct, and that Tuesday was the first day of Eid. "Spreading such doubts only harms Islam," he said.

Hatem Auda, director of the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research, had said that astronomical calculationsby scientistsof the institute noted that the crescent of Shawwal would start atexactly5:04am on Monday,29August, and disappear a minute to ten minutes before sunset in the vast majority of Arab and Islamic capitals. That would mean that the first day of the Eid would be Wednesday, 31 August, making Tuesday, 30 August the last day of Ramadan for the Hijri year of 1432.

But Muslim Shaltout, vice president of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, said the countries that share part of the night, such as Senegal, Mauritania and Nigeria, mayhavea unified sighting of the crescent.

"Therefore, Egypt announcing the beginning of the Eid on Tuesday is correct," he said.

Maged Abu Zahra, director of the Jedda Astronomy Society, was doubtful, saying that all astronomers in the Arab world sighting the crescent in Saudi Arabia that night would be impossible.

Patek Philippe’s Mecca Edition Luxury Watch Sold Out

5 September 2011

The introduction of the new, high-end timepiece 5130P Mecca Edition World Timer proves once again that Patek Philippe deserves his spot as one of the world’s leading watchmakers. This newest, stunning and sophisticated timepiece is inspired by the holy city of Mecca, capturing its wonder while at the same time tracking times at cities around the world.

The curious thing about this creation is that Philippe didn’t use gold while manufacturing it. The reason for this is a fable from the holy book of the Quran, which tells about how the prophet Muhammad met a man who on his dying bed was clothed in gold and silk, and relieved him of this clothing telling him that when the soul reaches heaven, he would be divested of material possessions before being given entry.

Despite not using any amount of gold, the watch is still a pinnacle of refinement and opulence, with its platinum chassis and an emerald green center on the dial. Platinum markings on the emerald green design indicate the hours. The outer rings of the dial features the names of prominent cities of the world and their times. Fitted with a 240HU movement that features 33 precious stones, the watch also has a scratch-resistant polished sapphire crystal casing. Water-resistant up to 30 meters, the Mecca edition Patek Philippe features a transparent casing, a 48-hour power reserve and a hand-stitched black crocodile skin strap.

The limited edition piece was designed exclusively for customers in the Middle East. All 150 pieces of the Mecca-inspired luxury watch have already been sold out, with a price of 58,500 Euros.

Saturnine faces as astronomers query moon sighting over Saudi Arabia

Error could mean millions of Muslims
began Eid celebrations on the wrong day

after mistaking Saturn for the moon. Photograph: Ho/AFP/Getty Images

Monday 5 September 2011

It is a pivotal point in the Islamic calendar, the moment when a month of fasting and contemplation finally comes to an end. But the celebration of Eid this year has been marred by controversy after claims that Saudi religious officials announced the festival on the wrong day.

Traditionally Ramadan comes to an end when the new moon is visible with the naked eye.

This year, officials in Saudi Arabia announced a sighting on Monday 29 August. Since then, however, astronomers have presented evidence to show that the moon was not visible at the time, and suggested that the Saudi officials may have actually been looking at Saturn.

Maged Abou Zahra, president of the Jeddah Astronomical Society, told the Egyptian paper al-Shorouk: "The sighting of a new moon would have simply been impossible."

If true, the mistake would mean that millions of Muslims around the world stopped fasting a day too early. When the new moon rises, it is not visible as it is completely in the shadow of the earth and astronomers claim that it usually takes around 15 hours before it is visible to the naked eye.

But in Saudi Arabia barely five hours passed before authorities announced the first "moonsighting" had been made by the requisite credible and pious person.

Middle Eastern analyst Issandr El Amrani, author of the Arabist blog, said the confusion suggested that Muslims should start using more scientific methods to determine the start of the Islamic month.

"The need for a naked eye sighting is a literal interpretation of Islamic tradition that should be adapted to technological realities," he said.

Many claim that the Saudis, in fact, already use astronomical calculations to pinpoint the start of the next Islamic month, but present the information as a traditional moonsighting to please conservative Muslims. There has been no official comment from Saudi religious authorities.

The confusion has prompted some commentators to question whether the world's estimated 1.6 billion Muslims should follow rulings from Saudi clerics simply because the site of the holy pilgrimage, the Ka'aba, is located in the country.

Sheikh bin Baz, a religious scholar in Mecca said in a recent speech that "there are no grounds for Muslims in the UK to follow Saudi Arabia".

Iqbal Sacranie, former general secretary of the Muslim Council of Britain, said that he wanted to unite the Muslim community to celebrate the occasion at the same time: "It is extremely sad that the Muslim community in the UK are divided on this very important issue of celebrating Eid. I believe it is now time for key scholars from different schools of thought to come together with Muslim organisations like the MCB and address this issue once and for all."

Ahmed Versi, editor of the Muslim News said that it was not uncommon for Muslim communities to celebrate Eid on different dates – mosques in the UK marked the festival on at least three different days.

Websites such as Moonsighting.com have existed for a number of years, giving the precise details of where it is possible for the moon to be seen.

But the majority of Muslims still use more traditional methods, only celebrating Eid when the moon is seen with the naked eye. This year's embarrassing error may lead more people to use astronomical calculations to decide about the new Islamic month instead of relying on the Saudi methodology.

A committee assigned to study the problem recommended that the bodies of the pilgrims should be either handed over to the families back homeor buried in the Kingdom within a maximum period of 60 days.

Foreign airlines blamed for Umrah flight delays

King Abdulaziz International Airport

9 September 2011

JEDDAH - Ten foreign airlines have delayed 49 flights of Umrah performers due to technical and operational malfunctions, according to Khalid Bin Abdullah Al-Khaibari, the spokesman of the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA).

"Some 86 scheduled foreign airlines flights of Umrah performers took off successfully Wednesday while 37 were delayed," he said.

Some of the airlines whose flights got delayed were Iraqi Airlines, EgyptAir, Nigerian Airlines, Pakistan International Airlines, Algerian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Moroccan Airlines, Tunisian Airlines, Cham Wings Airlines and Egyptian Nile, said Al-Khaibari.

He said that 2,711,689 Umrah performers on board 15,660 flights have left for their destinations.

A number of Egyptian Umrah performers protested at the Haj lounges over the delay of their flights for over three days, Al-Khaibari added.

"Thousands of Egyptian Umrah performers were stuck at the airport. Some of the angry passengers caused damage to public facilities inside the lounges and some attacked the employees who were trying to calm them down," he said.

A committee with members from the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Haj and the GACA has been formed to investigate the reasons which led to the delay in the departure of Egyptian passengers, Al-Khaibari said.

A visit to the foreign airlines terminal Thursday presented a picture of total chaos and confusion. Umrah passengers with trolleys loaded with luggage were found to be rushing from counter to counter to check about their flight status.

"Ignore the TV screens," said an employee of a foreign airlines as a passenger told him that his flight status was not being shown on the screen.
"They just did not issue the boarding passes to us and closed the counter," said another perturbed passenger. He claimed that the airlines had confirmed seats more that its capacity.

Some passengers who failed to board their flights were at least fortunate enough to be transported in airlines buses to hotels, but many were left unattended in the lounges.

Pilgrims' housing: Landlords penalized

9 September 2011

MAKKAH - Some 300 property owners in Makkah have been fined by the mayoralty for failing to meet pilgrims' accommodation requirements before the set deadline, which was last Rajab (June 2011).

The Pilgrims' Housing Inspection Committee (PHIC) listed the names of all those who filed late applications to obtain rent licenses for Haj. It sent the names to the compliance committee at Makkah Mayoralty, which in turn, decided to impose a SR500 fine on each applicant found not in compliance with the requirements, sources told Okaz/Saudi Gazette.

PHIC asked the violators to pay the fines at the Civil Status Administration and fulfill all conditions to meet the accommodation requirements.

"No exceptions are made while granting licenses for pilgrims' housing. All applicants have to comply with the pilgrims' housing regulations," said Eng. Zuhair Haddad, PHIC Chairman.

He said applicants were given seven months to submit license applications together with necessary documents for pilgrims' housing but they failed to do so.

This year, PHIC issued 6,900 licenses over seven months to buildings which meet pilgrims' accommodation requirements and which can accommodate 1,600,000 pilgrims, said Haddad. "Currently, PHIC is processing 400 license applications."

There are enough buildings for pilgrims' accommodation for next Haj season, Haddad said.
