MAKKAH — The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques announced on Sunday the plan for the distribution of Zamzam water through some retail companies in all regions of the Kingdom.
The National Water Company (NWC), the main operator of the King Abdullah Zamzam Water Project in Makkah, is undertaking the distribution of the holy water in cooperation with some retail companies.
It has concluded agreements with some retail companies including Othaim Markets and LuLu Group for the distribution.
This was in line with the keenness of the government of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and directives of Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, head of the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques.
In the first phase of the national drive, NWC started distribution of Zamzam water bottles among the people of Makkah two weeks ago. Eng. Mohammed Al-Mowakali, CEO of NWC, said that the company started finding appropriate solutions to distribute Zamzam water in light of the precautionary measures to stem the spread of coronavirus.
The company announced earlier standardization of Zamzam water bottles to a capacity of five liters instead of 10 liters. The new package is part of the Project’s transformation plan in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 to meet the increasing demand for Zamzam water bottles.
Al-Mowakali said that the temporary arrangement for the distribution of Zamzam, due to the outbreak of the pandemic, was made possible with the support of Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture and Chairman of the Board of Directors of NWC Abdul Rahman Al-Fadhli, and Sheikh Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais.
The King Abdullah Zamzam Water Project had announced earlier the closure of all Zamzam water sales outlets until further notice. This was part of the precautionary measures to combat the coronavirus.
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia is suspending the cost of living allowance and increasing the value-added tax (VAT) as part of measures to address the impact of the COVID-19 crisis, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Monday.
“Cost of living allowance will be suspended as of June first, and the value added tax will be increased to 15% from 5% as of July first,” SPA said, citing statement of the Ministry of Finance.
Finance Minister Mohammed Al-Jadaan said the twin measures are part of efforts to shore up state finances, which have been battered by low oil prices and the coronavirus crisis.
Al-Jadaan warned last week that Saudi Arabia would have to take "strict and painful measures" to deal with the twin impact of coronavirus pandemic and falling world oil prices.
“We must reduce budget expenditures sharply,” Al-Jadaan said, adding that some government projects may be slowed down to reduce expenditure.
“Current actions taken to date to cut spending are not enough, and Saudi public finances will need more control and the journey ahead is long," he said.
The pandemic has wrecked the global economy, leaving millions out of work, with the US alone reporting more than 20 million people becoming unemployed in April.

RIYADH — On behalf of the Ministry of Defense, the General Department for Medical Services of the Armed Forces has built two mobile hospitals with 100-bed capacity in Makkah to receive COVID19-infected patients, Saudi Press Agency said on Monday.
This is in line with the leadership's directives to harness all capabilities to safeguard the health of the citizens and expatriates.
The two mobile hospitals are equipped with all the required medical and health equipment to receive patients infected with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
The two mobile hospitals are located about two km from the isolated neighborhoods of the Holy Capital and will be operated in cooperation with the Health Affairs Department in Makkah Province.
This cooperation is part of the integrated efforts between the Armed Forces ‘Medical Services’ and the Ministry of Health at all levels, whether at the level of stationary hospitals or the mobile hospitals and the fleet of air medical evacuation aircraft that operate around the clock to deal with these cases. — SG
