Haj ministry can’t cancel
mahram condition

October 21, 2019

MAKKAH — The Ministry of Haj and Umrah has said that the cancellation of the condition of the mahram (male guardian) for women of all ages to be granted Umrah visa was not within its jurisdiction.

The National Committee for Haj and Umrah of the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry in a recent meeting asked the Minister of Haj and Umrah Mohammed Saleh Banten to cancel this condition.

Ministry's spokesman, Hatim Qadi, said it is not within the authority of the ministry to cancel the mahram condition.

"This is rather the concern of other ministries and government departments not our ministry," he explained.

Chairman of the committee, Marwan Shaaban, said the requests presented to the minister during the meeting included the cancellation of the mahram condition.

He said these requests would require the consent of and the coordination with other concerned parties before being implemented.

He said he also asked the minister to exempt the counties which do not have regular systems for money transfers from the condition of remitting the Haj and Umrah fees to the ministry.

Shaaban said he and the other members of the committee presented as many as 11 recommendations to the minister to approve.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from the ministry, investors in the Umrah sector, hoteliers and other concerned officials.

Photos reflect the development
of Makkah in 10 years

Mataf expansion

The passage of 10 years means that many and many have changed, both in terms of urban and cultural development, a time when some people do not notice its passage unless you see images that reflect this prosperity.

Saudi photographer Mohammed al-Bustani
tends to take pictures of building designs in various places in Saudi Arabia. After witnessing the beginnings of the development of Makkah and the central region and the Great Mosque of Makkah, Bustani decided to accompany the lens of his camera in time, to document the stages of this rapid development, within 10 years

What are the places documented by the Saudi photographer, Mohammed Bustani, in 10 years?

Ghaza الغزة

Amer people شعب عامر

Mount Kaaba جبل الكعبة

Umm Al Qura Road طريق ام القرى

From Jabal al-Ka'bah to the people of Amer, the photographer seeks to highlight the work done in a short period of time, while documenting the chronological stages of urban and urban development in Mecca.

If you are curious about one of these places, the neighborhood of Ghaza, one of the neighborhoods adjacent to the Grand Mosque, had many hotels and popular souks. In 10 years, it has been transformed into yards of the Grand Mosque and public transport stops.

In an interview with Al-Bustani, he said that the development of these places over the past 10 years has a "great impact in organizing and providing comfort to the residents and destinations of Makkah."

The work of the gardener has not been without challenges .. After a major change in some areas, it has become difficult to restore the scene to a different angle. Although he has been waiting for many years to take one picture, the result is "fun and different," he said.

Al Bustani, an architectural specialist, tends to document the city of Makkah in many respects, such as monitoring pilgrims, pilgrims, and documenting the Hajj and Umrah seasons.

Birmingham pilgrims 'lose thousands' on cancelled Mecca trips

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-50562083

Worshippers fear they will lose thousands of pounds after their Hajj pilgrimages to Mecca were cancelled.

Pilgrims, who each bought packages through travel agent Taha Travel, in Small Heath, Birmingham, said refunds were not received and the shop was closed.

One woman took 17 years to save for her family's summer trip to Saudi Arabia.

Jameil Kendawi, of Taha Travel, said he was trying to pay back funds.

Every year millions of Muslims make the journey to Mecca.

An investigation by BBC Midlands Today found at least 11 people paid for packages for their families, which were being sold by Taha Travel for up to £4,000 each.

'Disastrous news'
It is understood the firm was not Atol protected.

Mohammad Asif Qureshi, from Birmingham, said his family's bags were packed until they received the "disastrous" news they were unable to go on their trip.

"My wife is really depressed. It took her about 17 years she was saving," he said.

"I have never heard before of somebody doing this. I've truly trusted a person.

"I thought how can somebody do this kind of job on a pilgrimage?"

Shahnaz Latif said she had been preparing for the trip for five years and the disappointment was "very hard" for the family to deal with.

In September, Mr Kendawi, a director of Taha Travel, spoke to the BBC when he was in Iraq and said he was "let down by the Saudi authorities".

The BBC has contacted Mr Kendawi on several further occasions, but he failed to respond to requests for comment.

Rashid Mogradia, the chief executive officer from the council of British Hajjis, said people should look for licensed Hajj organisers to make sure the company had a Ministry of Hajj and Umrah licence accredited by the Saudi Ministry.

Grand Mosque gate numbers illuminated

December 22, 2019

MAKKAH — The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques has started writing the numbers of the gates of the Grand Mosques in illuminated colors to make it easy for the pilgrims and visitors to recognize them.

4 historical graves discovered
in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Maala
cemetery in Makkah

50 historical graves had been discovered 10 years ago during the expansion of the cemetery

MAKKAH: The Holy Makkah Municipality announced the discovery of four historical tombs, one of which that dates back to the second century of Islam and the rest dating back to more than 700 years. The tombs were discovered during the excavation and processing of a new smart parking project located at the northeast of the historic Al-Maala cemetery.

One of these graves is historically attributed to a person named Jamaluddine Al-Jilani who died in 1288.

The municipality explained that while the contractor was conducting the excavation works for the new project, the tombs were found.

A source at the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH) told Arab News that four historical graves were found near Al-Ashraf Awqaf, northeast of the historical cemetery, one of which dates back to the second century of the Islamic calendar. He stressed that the SCTH would receive the tombs officially next Sunday.

He also pointed out that 50 historical graves had been discovered 10 years ago during the expansion of the cemetery.

FASTFACT

The graves were discovered during the excavation and processing of a new smart

parking project located at the northeast of the historic Al-Maala cemetery.

Dr. Fawaz Al-Dahas, director of the Makkah History Center, told Arab News that the discovery of such historical tombs was a natural occurrence so close to the old cemetery.

According to Al-Dahas, there were a number of tombstones from similar finds in Al-Zaher Museum, which is supervised by the SCTH.

Al-Dahas explained the naming behind the cemetery was due to its location in Makkah.

It is the place where the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) wife, grandfather, and other ancestors are buried.

Historically, when a deceased person was buried, a sign would be placed on the grave to leave a mark, most probably an uneven, engraved rectangular stone.

While the drilling and processing contractor performed his duties within the new smart car parking
project next to the Ma’alah tombs, tombstones dating back to the year 687 AH were found.

Makkah launches project
to improve checkpoints for pilgrims

The Makkah Region Development Authority (MRDA) has begun a modernization
project of checkpoints for pilgrims undertaking Hajj and Umrah.

January 15, 2020

MAKKAH: The Makkah Region Development Authority (MRDA) has begun a modernization project of checkpoints for pilgrims undertaking Hajj and Umrah, which should reduce waiting times significantly, it has announced.

The project was launched under instructions from Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, governor of Makkah and MRDA chairman, and the supervision of Prince Badr bin Sultan, deputy governor of Makkah.

The security-control center on Al-Shumaisi Road, which links Makkah and Jeddah, is underdoing development and should be fully operational before Ramadan. Development work includes increasing the number of traffic lanes to 16, updating the center’s technological infrastructure to increase efficiency, and integrating several government services under one roof. Fifteen percent of the work has already been completed.

MRDA spokesperson Jalal bin Abdul Jalil Kaaki said that the authority has also begun development of a security-control center in Al-Nawwariyah in northern Makkah, adding that the new service facilities at the improved centers will also benefit residents of Makkah. Those facilities — at least in Al-Shumaisi — will include administrative offices, a mosque, a civil defense center, a Red Crescent center, and a building housing other government agencies.
