Mobily first to test 5G near
Makkah’s Grand Mosque

May 01, 2019

Saudi telecom giant Mobily has successfully conducted site tests in cooperation with Ericsson for 5G in Makkah reaching speeds in excess of 1 gigabit (1,000 megabits). The tests by Mobily and Ericsson are the first such tests conducted in an area close to the Holy Mosque, which has one of the highest concentration of mobile users in the world. Upon deployment, 5G will boost their customer experience.

Mobily CTO Alaa Al-Malki said: “Our vision as a company is in line with Saudi Arabia’s national agenda that emphasizes the importance of technologies such as 5G to form the pillars of an innovative society. Mobily continues its efforts in enabling digital technologies that empower customers and the ecosystem to lead the way to a digital future. Our partnership with Ericsson is part of our ambition to evolve toward the next-generation mobile technology 5G and contribute to Saudi Vision 2030.”

Consumers can expect faster download and upload speeds with the 5G network, more stable connections, lower latency, the ability to connect a higher number of devices to the network, as well as considerable reduction in device energy consumption and related costs.

The use of 5G technology will allow users to enjoy a much better experience with applications such as VR (virtual reality). The quality of videos and streaming will also be markedly improved as HD will become the norm. On a grander scale, IoT (Internet of Things) will become widely used as related applications become easier to use given faster speeds and lower latency. Mobily said the fifth generation technology will also enable it to present many opportunities for enterprises and industries in the Kingdom.

The deployment of 5G is considered a revolution in ICT and its applications are expected to facilitate scores of services. One such crucial application will be in the medical field while another, highly anticipated application is smart city connectivity. Mobily and Ericsson have a long and successful partnership working toward the new era of 5G technology.

Mobily is working toward digital transformation in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 by implementing latest cutting-edge technologies to meet the increasing demand of telecom services, particularly data services.

Free nurseries for children of pilgrims

2019-05-07

MAKKAH — The seasonal nurseries program is considering introduction of three kinds of nurseries for the children of pilgrims; one of them free of charge, Makkah daily reported on Tuesday.

The concerned government departments are currently working on the final draft to further develop the nurseries so as to forward it to Makkah Emir Prince Khaled Al-Faisal for final approval.

Industry sources said the first category of the nurseries, which was applied during the last year's Haj, was an investment one.

They said this category will remain as it is at the charges of SR2,500 per child during the five days of the Haj while the second category, which will be free of charge, will be introduced on an experimental basis for the first time this year.

The sources said the free of charge nurseries will together have 200 seats. The children will be provided by free of charge meals while Umm Al-Qura University will provide them with 90 male and female nurses for their health care.

The sources said the third category will be a merger of the investment and the free of charge categories. They said the parents will have to pay SR1,000 for each child.

The sources said online application for the nurseries will be closed down mid Ramadan (May 20).

The emir has directed the concerned parties to develop the nurseries within the Kingdom's efforts to provide consummate services to the pilgrims.

Clock tower museum in Makkah thrown open to visitors

2019-05-11

MAKKAH — The clock tower museum in Makkah has been opened to visitors to make a journey of faith through the universe starting from the beginning of Ramadan on May 6.

The museum occupies the top four floors of the clock tower in MakkahOne of the floors is dedicated to the sun and the moon; another to time measurement and the third to the giant clock itself while the fourth is a balcony where the visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the Grand Mosque.

The non-profit Misk Foundation established by Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, is operating the museum, which is located on the highest point in Makkah.

The museum was designed to take the visitors on a tour of the universe, which will tell them how people used to measure the time in olden days. They used the sun, the moon and the galaxies for the purpose.

The visitors will come to know the methods people in ancient times used to measure time through the use of the universe's two clocks — the sun and the moon.

They will also be able to see the largest clock in the world, which is considered a miracle in watch making.

The first floor contains the Makkah clock, which was designed and manufactured jointly by a number of international watch companies. They made various components of the clock, making it the most accurate in the world in giving time.

The second floor dedicated to time measurement explains to the visitors how man in old ages was keen to know the time. Man had invented many tools and systems for time measurement through the ages. They included water and sand clocks, the pendulum and the pocket watch.

Man in the old ages closely followed the orbits of the sun and the moon to decide the dates, the direction of the Qiblah and the prayer time.

On the third floor of the museum, the visitors will have a treat of the sun, the moon and the earth. The visitors can see how man in the past relied on the celestial bodies to organize his life and activities. They will also come to learn how the eclipse and other solar phenomena take place in the universe.

On the fourth floor, the visitors will have a chance to deeply understand the space and the stars, and how man used them in the past to determine his destinations.

Lastly, the balcony of the clock tower will give the visitors a panoramic view of the vast Grand Mosque complex and its surroundings.

Haramain Train: Largest public
transport project in Middle East

July 21, 2019

JEDDAH — The over SR60 billion Haramain High Speed Express Train is considered the largest public transport project in the Middle East, according to the acting director of the Public Transport Authority Rumaih Al-Rumaih.

The train is connecting the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah via Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City in Rabigh.

It covers a distance of 450 km in about 120 minutes at a speed of 300 km/h.

The project has 35 trains each with a capacity of 417 seats and has five railway stations with the main one in Makkah which is built on an area of 503,000 sq. meters accommodating about 19,500 passengers per hour and is only four km away from the Grand Mosque, Al-Madina Arabic daily quoted Al-Rumaih as saying.

The official explained that the ticket price varies depending on the distance. He said the price between Jeddah and Makkah for the hospitality class is SR40 while it is SR50 for the business class.

He said between Makkah and Madinah the prices start at SR150 and go up to SR250 for the business class.

He said each railway station consists of a main building, arrival and departure lounges, waiting areas, VIP halls, shopping places, restaurants, coffee shops, mosques and other utilities.

Rumaih said there are helicopter landing facilities and offices for the Civil Defense.

He said the Madinah station is a work of archeological marvel. It has 19 elevators, 12 escalators and is only 6 km away from the Prophet's Mosque.

The station has a mosque accommodating about 1,000 worshipers, a parking lot for about 1,000 cars and 417 surveillance cameras.

The train transports 3,800 passengers in an hour between Makkah and Madinah and 19,600 between Jeddah and Makah. In a year, it transports about 60 million passengers.

Umrah pilgrims now free
to move around Saudi Arabia

July 16, 2019

JEDDAH: Millions of Umrah pilgrims are to be granted the freedom to visit anywhere in the Kingdom during their stay, the Saudi Cabinet decided on Tuesday.

Muslims making the holy pilgrimage will be allowed to tour anywhere in the country as part of Saudi Arabia’s plans to boost tourism and the economy.

“The Cabinet has decided to exclude people coming to perform Umrah and to visit the Prophet’s Mosque (in Madinah), of the prohibition of movement outside Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah. A royal decree has been prepared to this effect,” the acting media minister, Issam bin Saeed, said in a statement to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Previously, Umrah pilgrims were restricted to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah and the port city of Jeddah.

Vision 2030 aims to increase the country’s capacity to welcome Umrah visitors from 8 million to 30 million every year.

Nearly 8 million Muslims will perform Umrah in the Kingdom this year, and the Cabinet’s move will enable them to enjoy a broader experience of Saudi Arabia by visiting key landmarks, historic sites, tourist attractions and shopping centers.

“We are looking to enrich the experience of pilgrims and facilitate their arrival,” Dr. Amr Al-Maddah, chief planning and strategy officer at the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, told Arab News. “Traveling around the Kingdom is an opportunity for pilgrims to visit cultural and tourist sites.

“At the same time, they will be allowed to arrive at any port in the country which will facilitate their arrival and expand the capacity to receive more pilgrims.”

Ministers hope their decision will help toward reaching Saudi Arabia’s goal of receiving 30 million Umrah pilgrims by 2030.

In the past, pilgrims were allowed to convert their visas into a tourist visa on the condition that they were registered with a tourism program. “This is no longer a requirement,” said Al-Maddah.

He added that they would now be free to plan visits to other Saudi cities, tourist destinations, festivals and events, within the period of their visa validity.

Al-Maddah said: “We want to make it available to everyone in order to enrich the experience of the pilgrims, which is one of the goals of Vision 2030.”

He noted that the authority responsible for implementing the Cabinet’s decision would be the Interior Ministry.

Makkah successfully reduces heat
in pedestrian pathways at holy sites

The Secretariat of the Holy Capital has implemented a project to apply a heat-blocking
coating to pavement surfaces in pedestrian pathways at holy sites.

July 25, 2019

RIYADH: The Secretariat of the Holy Capital has implemented a project to apply a heat-blocking coating to pavement surfaces in pedestrian pathways at holy sites.

The first phase of the project included coating the pedestrian pathway in Mina all the way to the Jamarat facilities, a total area of about 3,500 square meters.

The director general of the holy sites and seasons, Ahmed Manshi, pointed out that the project is being implemented in cooperation with the Japanese corporation Sumitomo.

“The project aims to reduce the temperature of the pavement surface in Shaiben area, and there is a possibility to include the Jamarat facilities, and coat several pedestrian pathways at holy sites,” he said.

Manshi added that the project will help reduce the temperature by 15-20 degrees celsius, highlighting that the temperature will be recorded every 10 seconds during the season using sensors installed under the asphalt.

He explained that to measure the success of this project, surveys will be distributed to pilgrims during this year’s Hajj season.

“We have also coordinated with the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Hajj and Umrah Research to conduct a study on this experiment, recommend the possibility of expanding to other locations, and learn the most convenient sites for the secretariat to provide the service,” he said.

The project came after the completion of a network of pedestrian pathways extending from the Mount of Mercy (Jabal Al-Rahma) in Arafat to Mina, passing through Muzdalifah.

It aims to ensure the comfort, safety and security of pilgrims while they move between holy sites. The pathway has been paved using interlocking tiles, and benches are placed on both sides for pilgrims to rest.

Sunshades have also been installed to protect pilgrims from the sun, and concrete barriers have been placed to prevent vehicles from entering the pedestrian pathway. The pathway is lit using high-tech poles and LED beams, which are bright, cost-efficient when compared to ordinary lighting, and have low emissions.
