Last updated: Saturday, September 19, 2015 11:57 PM

Saudi Gazette report

RIYADH — Pilgrims’ departure flights have been shifted from Sept. 26 to Sept. 27 as the 1st of Dhul Hijjah fell on Tuesday (Sept. 15) and not on Monday (Sept. 14) as announced by the Umm Al-Qura calendar.

A circular to this effect was issued to airlines by the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) on Saturday.

The circular said that airlines have to reschedule their flight operations accordingly. The grouping of pilgrims will also follow the new flight schedules, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

6 top tips for a safer Hajj

By Staff Writer | Al Arabiya News
Saturday, 19 September 2015

With the Hajj being one of most populated events in the world, anyone taking part in it has to take some precautions with regards to his health safety.

Nader Sabry, the founder of Time5, which according to its website “the world’s first health & wellness company addressing Muslim lifestyle needs through innovation” usually takes the Hajj season to publish his advice:

1. Keeping hydrated: drinking plenty of water hydrates and allows the system to repair itself.
2. Personal mats: using a personal prayer mat prevents the spread of germs from person to person.
3. Antibacterial wipes: As Hajj consists of several stages and constant movement from place to place among millions of people, keeping your hands clean is vital.
4. Mask: airborne microbes can easily spread. Wearing a mask that covers the nose and mouth lowers the risk of direct infection.
5. Eating Honey: Natural honey is filled with nutrients to keep you energized and also works as a natural antimicrobial.
6. Oregano oil: daily dosage of 2-3 drops of Oregano oil will disinfect and protect against microbes that enter directly into the respiratory system.

2 million pilgrims arrive in Mina

SUBMISSION TO GOD: Hajis offer combined prayer of Dohr and Asr at Al-Khaif Mosque in Mina.

23 September 2015

MINA: Two million Muslims from around the world arrived in the Mina valley outside the holy city of Makkah. They came by bus, car or on foot to camp in the tent city for Yaum Al-Tarwiya on Tuesday’s first leg of the annual Haj pilgrimage.

The weather conditions were particularly harsh in the day but Hajis were pleasantly surprised by light showers after Maghreb. They stayed inside their tents beseeching Allah and reciting the Holy Qur’an.

The pilgrims came chanting, “Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik” (Here I am, Allah, answering Your call). They will spend the night in 50,000 tents, in preparation for Wednesday’s standing in prayer on Mount Arafat which is the climax of the five-day ritual.

Thanks to massive safety and security arrangements, the 8-km trek by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from Makkah to Mina, an uninhabited valley enclosed by arid mountains, was free of incident.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Naif, who is chairman of the Supreme Haj Committee, congratulated Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman on the successful arrival in the Kingdom of 1.38 million pilgrims from 164 nations. The number of Haj pilgrims is fewer than last year by 5,439.

In a message addressed to King Salman, the crown prince said: “I am honored on this blessed day to express my warmest greetings and congratulations to you on the successful and safe arrival of pilgrims by air, land and sea for Haj 2015. They have arrived in the holy land in peace and security, thanks to Allah Almighty and your continuing care for all services to them which create the means of comfort and enable them to perform their Haj rituals easily and safely.”

The crown prince prayed to Allah Almighty to preserve King Salman “for this nation as a leader and leader of its renaissance, and for the continuation of the blessings of security and faith for this country.”

Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki said the movement of pilgrims from Makkah into Mina was orderly and went according to a well-executed plan.

He credited the smooth movement to extraordinary coordination among all agencies and increased awareness among Saudis and expatriates to abide by the rules and regulations. Hatem Qazi of the Haj Ministry said 20,000 buses were pressed into service to transport the pilgrims from Makkah into Mina.
Everyone had a word of praise for the excellent arrangements.

“All our pilgrims were in Mina by 9 a.m. on Tuesday,” said Indian Consul General B.S. Mubarak. “There were no hiccups.”

Doctors at local hospitals said the intense weather was taking a toll on elderly pilgrims. “Once they were inside their tents, however, they were comfortable,” said Dr. Masood Jilani, a doctor from Pakistan. “The sprinklers came on, lowering the temeprature somewhat.”

Abida Khan, a 69-year-old woman from Pakistan, was in tears when she landed in Mina. “I am here because our beloved Prophet, peace be upon him, told us to do so. His word is a command to us,” she told Arab News. “Ever since I grew up, I have dreamed of coming here for Haj. In my mind’s eye, I always saw the Holy Kaaba and Mina and Madinah. Now that I am here, I cannot believe my eyes. The dream has come true.”

Egyptian pilgrim Amani Abdullah felt like she was on top of the world. “To see all these people from around the world responding to one call and speaking in one voice to our one Creator is an indescribable feeling,” she said.

Khaled Nabeel, a Jeddah-based Syrian expat, was a little reluctant when Arab News approached him for his comments. “The only thing we Syrians are praying for is peace. We are hungry for peace. May Allah grant us and the people of the world peace,” he said.

Massive changes in Mina
bring cheer to pilgrims

23 September 2015

MINA: Mina, which comes to life only once a year in Haj, is in fact a small city. As far as the eye can see, tents cover every open space. They are neatly arranged, row after row. In the sea of white, the historic Al-Khaif Mosque stands out with its brick-red minarets.

The mosque is the center of activity here in Mina. Pilgrims come from their far-off tents to pray inside the majestic mosque. Once in the mosque, pilgrims are a picture of piety and contemplation. Massive airconditioning units keep the vast mosque cool, pleasant and comfortable.

Thanks to a mild drizzle, the weather was bearable on Monday evening with a cool breeze blowing across the valley. Tuesday was a different story. By 8 in the morning, it had become hot and around midday everyone felt the heat. For those not under cover, the sun was scorching. Many pilgrims, therefore, tried to escape the midday heat within the Al-Khaif Mosque.

Like everything else in Mina, this famous mosque has undergone many changes. There are now several entrances for women and more than 100,000 worshippers can be accommodated in the mosque for each of the five daily prayers.

From photos in old books, one can see the great change that both the mosque and Mina itself have experienced in the last 100 years.

Mina is where the pilgrims spend the most time during the five-day pilgrimage. Although it has an area of six million square meters, only four million square meters can be used as the rest of the terrain is mountainous.

In the last several years, the Saudi government has implemented a number of vital projects in Mina costing billions of riyals. The projects include state-of-the-art expressways, tunnels, flyovers, an exclusive train network, the massive Jamrat complex, water tanks and electricity plants.

There are now more than 50,000 fire-proof tents which can house up to two million pilgrims. The fire-proof tent project was implemented in the aftermath of a terrible fire on the first day of Haj in 1997; it claimed the lives of some 300 pilgrims and destroyed 70,000 tents.

Each new tent, made of fiber-glass coated with Teflon, has a heat-sensitive water sprinkler which is linked to an alarm system and electric lighting.
Thousands of desert air-conditioners, automatic water sprinklers, fire extinguishers and fire detectors have been installed to make the journey comfortable for pilgrims. Iron bars with a total weight of 10,000 tons were used to steady the tents.

The tents can withstand strong winds and the sewage system has been constructed so as to remove rain water from the area.

“The Saudi government deserves our praise for the excellent infrastructural developments at the holy sites,” said Mohammed Akram Balochi, from Pakistan.

He said he would spend the night in Al-Khaif Mosque itself. “I will stay busy reciting verses from the Holy Qur’an and then take a nap in the mosque itself. After all, this is the mosque that has been host to millions of pious Muslims in the last 1,400 years.”

High temperatures challenge pilgrims
in Mina, Arafat

23 September 2015

MINA: High temperatures in Mina forced most pilgrims to stay inside their tents on Tuesday, the 8th day of Dul Hijjah. Most pilgrims prefer to leave Mina on this day preparing to spend the 9th day of this month in Arafat.

The General Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) forecast that temperature will be 42°C in Mina and 45°C in Makkah on Tuesday, while the temperatures will exceed 44°C in Arafat on Wednesday.

Spokesman of PME Hussain Al-Qahtani advised pilgrims to avoid walking long distances in the afternoon at the holy sites because of the high temperatures at this time.

Speaking to Arab News, he said: "Haj season for this year comes in September. It is known that the temperature in most regions of the Kingdom, especially in the Makkah region, is high. Haj season in the next years will be in mid-summer."

Meanwhile, a doctor at the emergency department at Minah Al-Jesser Hospital told Arab News that the hospital received one case of sunstroke in a pilgrim who came to Mina from Makkah by foot on Tuesday morning.

"We expect to receive more cases of sunstroke especially among old pilgrims in the coming hours due to the high temperatures at the holy sites. All health centers at the holy cites have been mobilized to deal with these kinds of cases,” he added.

“I think that we will suffer from high temperatures in Arafat on Wednesday. However, it could be great if we ask Allah for blessing,” Abu Hamza, a Saudi pilgrim, told Arab News.

“I am performing Haj for the first time. I was insistent on performing Haj this year before the high temperatures reach 50°C in the next years as Haj will come in summer,” Ahmed Abdul Rahman, a Sudanese pilgrim said. “The high temperatures at the holy sites is the main reason my friends in Makkah advised me to postpone my Haj plans. I think that I would have to wait for six years at least to perform Haj with lower temperatures,” Saeed Hamed, a Yemeni expatriate living in Jeddah said.

Hajj: At least 310 dead in Mina stampede

By Staff Writer | Al Arabiya News
Thursday, 24 September 2015
Saudi Arabia’s civil defense says that at least 310 pilgrims have died while 450 others were injured when a stampede broke out in the tent city of Mina, reported Al Arabiya News.

Rescue operations are currently under way, the service said on Twitter, after the stampede in Mina near Mecca, where hundreds of thousands of pilgrims were taking part in the 'stoning of the devil', last major rite of the Hajj pilgrimage.

Al Arabiya News Channel’s correspondent Abdulrahman Al-Osaimi reporting from Mina emergency hospital said the stampede happened at the entrance of the Jamarat bridge near Street 204, not inside of the area where the stoning pillars are.

“The injured have been distributed to four other hospitals in the Mina area. Some of the injured have been evacuated by helicopters to hospitals in Makkah city,” our reporter said.

The civil defense team also said that their teams on the ground are leading pilgrims to safer routes away from the stampede through alternate routes and that rescue operations are still underway.
