Tawaf on Segway board: Opinions differ on whether it is Islamic
SIRAJ WAHAB
A combo image of screen grabs from a video clip shows a man performing Tawaf on a Segway board at the Grand Mosque in Makkah.
Published — Tuesday 1 September 2015
JEDDAH: A short video showing a pilgrim, draped in the two pieces of seamless cloth called ihram, circumambulating the Kaaba in Makkah using a Segway board, has gone viral on social media.
The well-built man is seen swooshing past fellow pilgrims on the second level of the mobile platform set up in the Grand Mosque’s open mataf section specifically for wheel-chair-bound and elderly pilgrims.
The high-tech device, which is a self-balancing battery-operated machine with no handlebars, also known as the “uberboard,” was perhaps used for the first time by a pilgrim in this manner. The video was taken by a visitor to the mosque, with the pilgrim oblivious to the fact that he was being filmed.
The video was first posted on Monday evening by British Haj Travel Limited on their Twitter handle @BHTofficial. From there, the clip went viral. It was on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and every other platform.
The clip elicited thousands of responses with everyone wondering if it was right from an Islamic point of view to circumambulate perched on this innocuous self-propelled machine.
“This is not fair. If you can walk, then you must perform Tawaf by walking; this is disrespectful,” tweeted Ahsan via @AsnSaleem. “People in pain walk to get the reward and he is just abusing it,” wrote @ibeabdul.
“It is allowed,” ruled Riyadh-based Maulana Najeeb Qasmi Sambhali, who has done his postdoctoral thesis in Hadith from a reputable university in India. He is a graduate of the world famous religious seminary Darul Uloom Deoband. “As long as the pilgrim’s feet are not covered by the contraption, it is all right. There is no problem with that. It is like doing circumambulation in a wheelchair.”
On whether an able-bodied pilgrim should use the device, Maulana Qasmi said: “Different scholars will have different opinions on this particular aspect. As far as possible, where such things can be avoided, they should be avoided.”
He said if performing Tawaf on this contraption obstructs fellow pilgrims, then the ruling would be very clear. “It must not be used. If it harms fellow pilgrims, crashes into them, or creates fear, it must not be used at all.”
To a query posed on Twitter in response to the video clip on whether Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, performed Tawaf seated on the back of a camel, Maulana Qasmi said: “This is true. The Prophet performed Tawaf on a camel and had a stick in his hand which he pointed in the direction of the Black Stone (Hajr-e-Aswad) when starting each of the seven mandatory rounds around the Holy Kaaba.”
The Segway board, known by various names such as the “leviboard,” has been a viral sensation, being used by celebrities and video personalities to showcase a new and innovative method of personal mobility. The board consists of two plates attached to a large wheel on either side, thereby allowing the user to stand on the board without falling over.
Maneuvering the board is a simple process, involving the user to simply tilt in the direction needed. The board has a limited top speed of 4 mph, costs roughly $1,000 and is powered by a rechargeable battery that holds sufficient charge for six hours of continuous usage. The maximum weight the board can support is 110 kg.

Rollin' with the Hajj homies? Fatwa calls for ban on rollerboards in Mecca

A man was pictured doing his rounds in the Kaaba on a rollerboard. (Aliexpress)

The highly unusual sight of a man circumambulating the Kaaba in Makkah’s Grand Mosque on roller shoes has sent Saudis scurrying to religious edicts and explanations to decide whether religion allows the practice.A short clip of the man performing Tawaf (walking around Kaaba) as part of the Umrah rituals went viral on the Internet.Social media users were sharply divided whether religious texts allow abled men and women to resort to roller shoes or mini skate boards to go round the Kaaba seven times as required from people performing Umrah or pilgrimage. Most users seemed shocked that the man used roller shoes, saying that if he was physically able, he should do it on foot.
And if he had health issues, he should have hired a handicap chair or a wheelchair, Saudi news site Al Marsad reported on Monday.
Poor Saudi, a blogger, said that religious scholars needed to speak out quickly on the issue.
“If they lapse into silence, then we might have new innovations and inventions that might not be within the spirit of Umrah or pilgrimage,” he posted. "I believe that this man should have walked like everybody else since he seemed to be fit enough to stand on the roller shoes and not fall,” he said.
Abdul Rahman said that he was looking forward to a religious edict to decide on the issue before it becomes overwhelming.
Ban sought
“My view is that roller shoes should not be allowed,” he said. “People usually circumambulate Kaaba and focus on their prayers and supplications to God. This man and others would be focusing rather on keeping their balance on their moving shoes. They should not be allowed,” he said.
Bu Nawwas, another blogger, said he was concerned roller shoes would soon be the fashion in the Grand Mosque.
“I believe that a ban should be imposed on such gadgets because many people would try to use them if there were no restrictions,” he said. “There are enough chairs to help the disabled,” he said.

Iranian film on Prophet un-Islamic’

Saudi Gazette

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti has described the Iranian film Muhammad Messenger of God as un-Islamic, and said that its production is not permitted under Shariah.

“This is a Magian film and a hostile work against Islam,” Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Asheikh, who is also head of the Senior Scholars Commission and the Ifta Council, told Al-Hayat newspaper on Wednesday.

Al-Asheikh warned against showing or circulating the film, saying that it mocks and belittles the Prophet (peace be upon him).
He said the Prophet (pbuh) has special physical and moral features that should never be portrayed in film.

“The film makers are not reflecting the reality,” he said. “This is a lewd work which has no religion. It is a downright defamation of Islam.”

Al-Asheikh said those who are keen to glorify the Prophet should focus on spreading his Sunna, not showing his images.
“The film producers are not trustworthy,” he said. “Lying is the crux of their lives. They are not honest in all their matters.”
About 140 movie houses in Iran began showing the film last week.

The film’s producers say that it features the life of the Prophet.

They said it was the most expensive film in Iran’s movie history, costing about $40 million to produce.
The film’s director, Majid Majidi, said the aim of the 171-minute-long film is to reinforce Islamic unity.
The Azhar of Egypt has also denounced the film and asked for its immediate withdrawal from cinemas.
Secretary General of the Muslim World League (MWL) Abdullah Al-Turki denounced the production of the film and called for its immediate withdrawal from all movie theaters.

“The personification of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in movies or TV series is totally against Islam,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

The secretary general said that showing the Prophet in person in any art work will undermine his esteem.
Al-Turki asked the Iranian authorities to stop showing the film immediately.
The film was recently shown at Montreal movie festival.

‘Untrue’ Iranian film on Prophet roundly slammed by scholars

Grand mufti, MWL, Al-Azhar seek ban on ‘untrue’ movie
Published — Thursday 3 September 2015

Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz Abdullah Al-Asheikh

JEDDAH: Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh has slammed the Iranian-produced film entitled ‘Mohammed Messenger of God,’ saying that Islam does not allow the Prophet, peace be upon him, to be depicted in this manner.
He said the film depicts the Prophet in an “untrue light” and undermines the important role he plays in Islam. “This is a mockery of the Prophet and a degradation of his status,” he said.

Nearly 140 cinemas in Iran began showing the $40 million film, the most expensive in Iranian history, this week. According to the film’s director Majid Majidi, the aim of the 171-minute production is “to promote Islamic unity.”
Majidi said the aim of his work, the first part of a trilogy, is to reclaim the rightful image of Islam, which he said extremists have distorted.

Al-Azhar scholars denounced the film last week, demanding that the Iranian government ban it. Abdulfatah Al-Awari, dean of the faculty of theology at Al-Azhar University, said “it is not permitted under Shariah to embody the prophets.”
The Muslim World League (MWL) has also denounced the movie, which was shown last Thursday at the Montreal Film Festival in Canada, with scenes characterizing the body and figure of the Prophet (pbuh).

Abdullah bin Abdulmohsen Al-Turki, the MWL’s secretary general, said the Prophet should not be represented in this manner. Al-Turki urged Tehran to “suspend and prevent the screening of the movie” and called on Muslims to boycott it.
While Iran has denounced cartoons of the prophet like those published by French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, Shiites are generally more relaxed than Sunnis about depiction of religious figures.

Mataf expansion work to complete within 10 days
Last updated: Wednesday, September 02, 2015 11:55 PM

MAKKAH – As many as 14,000 workers are racing against time round the clock to complete the third and final phase of the expansion of mataf (area for circumambulation around the Holy Kaaba) before the start of the annual pilgrimage of Haj, which is expected to begin on Sept. 21.

“Of these, 6,000 workers are engaged in tiling the upper floor of the mataf and 90 percent of the work has already been completed,” according to Sultan Al-Qurashi, director of projects management at the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques.

He said the entire expanded mataf will be open to the pilgrims by the end of Dhul Qada (Sept. 13). He said the upper mataf, with a width of 40-50 meters, has a capacity to hold around 40,000 worshippers an hour, the Saudi Press Agency reported, quoting Al-Qurashi.

“The full capacity of the expanded mataf, with 107,000 pilgrims a hour, will be utilized this Haj,” he said.
Meanwhile, the presidency has opened the finished parts of the mataf project to the pilgrims. — SG/SPA

Camel slaughter during Haj banned

A camel herder wears a mask as a precautionary measure against MERS infection in this file photo. (SPA)

ARAB NEWS
Published — Thursday 10 September 2015
MADINAH: The Ministry of Health has reiterated that the ban on slaughtering camels during Haj would remain in place, with no exceptions, because of the danger posed by Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus.
Faisal Al-Zahrani, spokesman of the ministry, said the ban covers the entire Kingdom during Eid Al-Adha. It also includes the Burmese community in Makkah, whose members traditionally sacrifice camels. They would now have to use lambs, he was quoted as saying by a local publication.
He said the Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh had issued an edict instituting the ban to protect pilgrims. The fatwa states that people can use cows or sheep.
Abdulrahman Abdulkarim, an official at the Reconciliation Council at the Mount of Ohod in Madinah, said the Burmese community collects money to buy camels every year, with people sharing the meat of the animal.
He said that he has not received any official confirmation of the ban. However, several camel merchants have stopped buying camels and purchased sheep and cows because of the MERS virus, he said.
Camels have been identified as carriers of the MERS virus, which has infected 1,225 people in the kingdom since June 2012 when tit was first discovered by scientists.
Of the total, 521 victims have died, 633 have recovered and 71 are still under treatment, including 16 new cases in the past four days.
The Ministry of Agriculture earlier said that 3.3 percent, or 7,700 out of the 233,000 camels in the Kingdom, are infected with MERS virus.

Slaughter of camels banned all over KSA

Last updated: Wednesday, September 09, 2015 8:00 PM

MADINAH — Following the ban on the slaughter of camels as sacrifice during the upcoming Haj, the Saudi government has also banned their slaughter all over the Kingdom during the Eid Al-Adha.

The Ministry of Health said the move was taken as a precautionary measure against any possible spread of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) after it has been proved beyond doubt that the camels have been the carriers of the deadly virus.

The ministry's official spokesman, Faisal Al-Zahrani, said the ban covers all areas of the Kingdom without exception.

He said the Burmese community in Makkah, Madinah and elsewhere, who are accustomed to slathering camels during the Eid Al-Adha, should this year seek other alternatives such as cattle, sheep or goats.

The spokesman said the ban on slaughtering of camels during Eid Al-Adha was based on a fatwa (religious edict) issued by the Kingdom's Grand Mufti who said the camels for sacrifice could be replaced by sheep, cattle or goats.

"We have started dismantling the random camel dens in the holy sites and along the roads between Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah," he said.

Zahrani said accordingly no camel will be allowed to enter into the holy sites during this Haj season.

Kamal Omar Abdul Karim, a member of the Burmese community in Madinah, said the Burmese used to collect money from each other to buy camels for the Eid Al-Adha.

He said each one will pay according to his financial ability and everyone will be given his or her share of meat when a camel is slaughtered.

Karim said the picture for them is not clear this year because they have not received any official intimation banning the slaughtering of camels.

"We approached the Madinah Municipality which denied receiving any official instructions about the ban on camel slaughtering," he said.

Karim recalled that last Eid Al-Adha, the Burmese community in Madinah slaughtered 125 camels and seven cows.

"We only heard about the ban from the people but have not received anything official about it. We are waiting for the instructions to implement them," he said.

Karim said when the ban is officially communicated to them, they will set up committees to spread awareness among the community members to stop slaughtering the camels.

Meanwhile, camel traders said there was a remarkable drop in the buying of the camels and the market has become very gloomy.

They said people are now resorting to sheep and cattle for fear of the coronavirus.

Latest update from Makkah Mukarramah

We had just finished tawaf after asr
There was a huge sandstorm and then thunder, lightning, and then rain started
We went inside the new haram

Suddenly lightning struck one of the cranes
It crashed with all the steel etc, hit one of the pillars of the new haram and fell into Mataf

Some of our friends were separated from us during tawaf
They saw everything fall and were literally meters away

They saw many become shaheed in front of their eyes
In the Mataf at least a few dozen
However, on the top floor there were many casualties
One haram worker estimated at least one thousand people must have become shaheed

May Allah forgive them
May Allah have mercy on them May Allah give sabre Jameel to all families
May Allah protect the hujjaj and make the rest of Haj easy and incident free. Ameen

At least 87 people died and 201 more were injured when a crane collapsed at the Grand Mosque of Mecca ahead of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, the Saudi Interior Ministry said on Friday.

The Kingdom’s General Directorate of Civil Defense blamed the accident on severe storms, according to its official Twitter.

The governor of the Makkah region, the capital of which is Mecca, Khalid al-Faisal has ordered the launch of an investigation into the causes of the accident.

The tragedy comes ahead of the annual Hajj pilgrimage which is due later this month. Millions of Muslims from around the world will converge on the holy city between September 21-26.

Photos taken from the scene and posted on social media show bodies lying in blood on the mosque’s floor surrounded by construction rubble and metal parts of the crane.

Over 68 emergency and rescue groups are active at the scene of the accident, the Saudi Red Crescent said on Facebook.

Director General of the Civil Defense Authority, confirmed to al-Ikhbariya television that storm winds had uprooted trees and affected cranes in the area.

“All those who were wounded and the dead have been taken to hospital. There are no casualties left at the location,” he added.

7 Haj bus drivers fired over drugs

Khalid Al-Humaidi
Okaz/Saudi Gazette

MAKKAH — Seven bus drivers who were scheduled to take part in this year's Haj operations have been dismissed after testing positive for drugs.

Poison Control and Forensic Chemistry Center’s General Department Director Mohammad Miryani said the center tested drivers participating in this year’s Haj to ensure that they are free of any drugs and are in good health to drive pilgrims safely.

“We took more than 2,449 samples from drivers and repeated the tests on drivers who tested positive to ensure that there were no discrepancies in the tests.

The testing process does not take more than a few minutes and the center is sure about the results of the suspended drivers,” said Miryani.

He added they test for a variety of drugs including narcotics. “All of the suspended drivers have been replaced by the company as it is company regulation to have a substitute driver in case of any emergencies or unforeseen circumstances,” said Miryani.

He said there are three centers for testing bus drivers. “One is located in Al-Jumoum. The center will run two inspection campaigns.

The first campaign started on Aug. 16 and lasted until Sept. 11. The second campaign will start on Sept. 25 until Oct. 28,” said Miryani. The centers are equipped with the latest technology in drug testing and are run by specialists.

“There are also centers in Al-Shumaisi and Al-Nuwariyah. The centers also test drivers at their companies’ locations. The campaign was organized under the supervision of Makkah Health Directorate and the Ministry of Haj Pilgrims Transportation Directorate,” said Miryani.

Tawaf on bridge suspended for safety of pilgrims

Khalid Al-Himaidi
Okaz/Saudi GAzette

MAKKAH — The circumambulation around the Kaaba (tawaf) on the bridge which is used as a temporary circumambulation platform especially for wheelchair-bound pilgrims and the elderly, will be temporarily suspended as a result of Friday's crane collapse tragedy, according to a source at the General Presidency of the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques.

The two-story bridge is 12 meters wide and is 34 meters above the ground. “The General Presidency and the expansion project construction company have decided to suspend tawaf on the bridge for the safety of pilgrims,” said the source.

The bridge was built as a temporary mataaf (the area where Haj and Umrah pilgrims circle the Kaaba during the tawaf ritual) route until the expansion of the main mataaf is completed.

The construction on the main mataaf has reduced the total accommodation capacity of pilgrims by almost half. The bridge accommodates 35,000 pilgrims an hour.

A hundred doors lead to the Prophet’s Mosque

Saudi Gazette report

MADINAH — The Prophet's Mosque in Madinah is the second holiest place of worship in Islam. Even though a pilgrimage to the mosque is not a religious obligation on Muslims, millions of them from all over the world who come to perform Haj or Umrah in Makkah annually visit Madinah to pay homage to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and pray at his mosque.

The Saudi government mobilizes vast resources to serve the pilgrims and ensure their comfort throughout the year, but the influx of worshippers peaks during the Haj season.

Al-Madinah newspaper met Sheikh Abdulwahid Al-Hattab, public relations and media manager at the Presidency of the Prophet’s Mosque Affairs, to get an idea about the enormous arrangements being made to receive the pilgrims.

“The presidency utilized all its human and technical resources to provide the best and most efficient services to the guests of God so that they can worship in an atmosphere of peace and serenity," Hattab said.

"Our efforts are part of a bigger picture. The entire country under the able guidance of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman has mobilized to serve the guests of God in Makkah and Madinah.”

Hattab said about 5,000 employees — both men and women — has been working day and night to implement the operational plan in the Prophet’s Mosque for the current 1436 Haj season.

He said the volume of visitors is so huge that they enter the Prophet's Mosque through100 doors and the operational plan contains arrangements to welcome the worshippers at all the gates.

Hattab said the operational plan, prepared with the support and supervision of Madinah Emir Prince Faisal Bin Salman, focuses on four major aspects.

They include the preparation of the mosque and its facilities; optimizing all services in the mosque, including the opening of all doors and overseeing the access of worshippers; maintaining cleanliness and refurbishing the prayer areas; and managing the lighting, audio systems and air-conditioning, in addition to providing chilled Zamzam water for worshippers in all parts of the mosques and its courtyards.

"We have also prepared a plan to regulate the flow of incoming and outgoing visitors. Emergency medical help is on call and ushers inside the mosque complex provide assistance to pilgrims who lose their way," Hattab said.

"We have set standards for guiding the visitors. All employees and volunteers have been trained to talk to the visitors politely and with goodwill."

He said an audio-visual library is available with lots of books by prominent scholars to help those seeking religious guidance.

In addition to books, the library has an advanced computer network where the visitors can easily search digital copies of the books, he added.

Hattab said the presidency did not ignore the special requirements of women while preparing its operational plan for the season. Detailed instructions have been given out to look after the welfare of female worshippers.

Hattab said the presidency printed 1 million copies of leaflets in various languages for distribution among pilgrims to teach them the etiquettes of visiting the Prophet (pbuh) and his mosque.

"We also printed 400,000 copies in Arabic, English and Urdu to guide visitors about the correct way of greeting the Prophet (pbuh) and his companions and the rules of Haj and Umrah.

We’ve a dedicated team of students to answer any questions the pilgrims may have and guide them throughout their worship either in person or through the hot lines," he said.

Hattab said 250 giant umbrellas automatically spread open over the courtyards of the mosque when the weather gets hot. There are 436 fans spraying mist to cool the air and protect the visitors from dehydration.

The presidency also maintains the toilets and facilities for ablution with a dedicated team of 11,000 workers and supervisors. About 300 ablution points have been readied outdoors.

Hattab said this is the third year since the presidency has launched its campaign titled "Serving pilgrims is our pride."

“We use the campaign to promote distribution of booklets and gifts among the pilgrims. It is our responsibility as the residents of Madinah to make the visitors feel welcome in the Prophet's City," Hattab said. "Serving pilgrims with kindness, generosity and care is a tradition that we must maintain with high standards."
