on first Ramadan

Kingdom is ready to welcome Ramadan

Saturday 13 June 2015

RIYADH: Imams in mosques across the Kingdom, including those in Makkah and Madinah, used Friday's sermons to welcome the holy month of Ramadan with an immense sense of piety and requested their respective congregations to strictly follow the teachings of the Holy Qur'an during the fasting month.

Ramadan is expected to begin Thursday, depending on the visibility of the crescent. Next week, the Supreme Court in Riyadh will make a call on all Muslims in the Kingdom to sight the crescent of the month of Ramadan to determine the beginning of the month.

In his sermon at a mosque in Malaz in Riyadh, an Imam described Ramadan as the month of charity and requested Muslims to help alleviate poverty from society. “Helping the less fortunate is a must during the holy month,” he stressed.

He urged the members of the congregation to cultivate the habit of fasting among their children during the holy month. He added that such habits will go a long way in the children's life since they are the future generation of the Kingdom

An imam in another mosque said that Islam allows the sick to abstain from fasting but he stressed that they have to feed the poor in compensation for their loss of fasting days.

Pregnant and feeding mothers can refrain from fasting but they have to cover up the lost days during their healthy period. "The month is an ideal opportunity for people to relinquish their bad habits and cultivate healthy behavioral patterns", the imam said.

Quoting a well-known Islamic saying, an imam at a mosque in Nasseriyah said: "A day of fasting during this holy month will keep a Muslim away from hell for 70 years."

"You must mentally prepare yourselves to perform meritorious work during the holy month of Ramadan which comes once a year," the imam.

Last week, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Naif, deputy premier and minister of interior, approved the emergency plan of General Directorate of Civil Defense for Ramadan in Makkah and Madinah, which aims to strengthen preventive measures related to the works of civil defense and maintain the safety of Umrah performers throughout the holy month.

38 medical centers to serve Ramadan visitors
Sunday, 14 June 2015 - 27 Shaban 1436

JEDDAH — Makkah Health Affairs has reported that there will be 38 medical centers open for Umrah pilgrims during Ramadan.

Makkah Haj and Umrah Director Tawfiq Abu Talib said there will be two medical centers inside the Grand Mosque.

“The first center will be located at Gate 85 on the first floor on the western side of the mosque and the second center will be located near Al-Salam Gate on the eastern side of the mosque. There will also be 36 medical centers set up outside the Grand Mosque,” said Abu Talib.

He said the centers are fully equipped with the required machinery, technology and medical and administrative staff.

“If cases need to be transferred to hospitals, the medical staff is ready to transport the patients to any hospital in Makkah.

The centers will be open 24 hours a day, every day of the week. There are separate sections for women and men,” said Abu Talib.

He said Al-Juhfah Center on the Madinah-Makkah Highway will aid pilgrims and visitors driving from Madinah to Makkah.

“We have contracted with Ajyad Hospital, King Abdulaziz Hospital, Hiraa Public Hospital, Al-Nouf Specialized Hospital, Maternity and Children's Hospital and many others.

They are all fully equipped and have enough capacity to receive pilgrims or visitors of the Grand Mosque who fall sick,” he said.

A source from Ajyad Hospital said the hospital has contracted with Makkah Health Affairs to ensure that certain medical services will be available when needed during Ramadan.

“We are ready to receive patients in our intensive care unit, emergency ward, cardiovascular diseases ward and gastronomical diseases ward.

We have dedicated an entire team of medical staff to serve visitors of the Grand Mosque. We have also carried out maintenance of our facilities in order to offer smooth and optimum medical treatment to patients during Ramadan,” said the source.

Non-Muslims urged to respect holy month

Saturday 13 June 2015

RIYADH: With Ramadan likely to start on Thursday, non-Muslims have been urged to respect the holy month and abstain from eating, drinking and smoking in public.

The Ministry of Interior issues a notice every year to ensure that those of other faiths understand and abide by the country’s laws. Failure to do so can result in legal trouble.

For Muslims, it is a month of spiritual training where they do everything they can to get closer to Allah. There is not only abstention from food and drink and marital relations during daylight hours, but also striving to help others in need.

For those who are overweight and obese, the month of fasting can assist in losing those extra kilograms, which are the cause of so many chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease.

Some non-Muslim expatriates here have been known to fast, in an attempt to gain an understanding of this religious duty and achieve some spiritual enlightenment.

“I consider Ramadan as the best time for spiritual molding by controlling my worldly desires. This is the month I practice abstaining from arrogance, vanity, gossiping, backbiting, cursing, disrespecting others and the like,” expatriate Saleh Bucay told Arab News.

“I humbly appeal to our non-fasting fellow expats to be curious and cautious at the same time. As a sign of respect, they should avoid eating or drinking in front of those who are fasting, particularly in public areas.”

A Filipino worker, Neil Grajo, told Arab News that he fasted last year to lose weight, change some of his bad habits, and show some respect for his Muslim colleagues at work.

“Ramadan could be good for a country such as the Philippines where smoking and drinking alcohol is widespread, which has not only cost people money but also their lives,” Grajo said. He said bad habits and immorality cannot be changed without actual physical training.

Sa’dullah Khan, in an article entitled ‘Why Do Muslims Fast,’ stated: “Through fasting, the human being comes to grips with his carnal self, taming his physical appetites, subduing his greed and lust, and thus traversing a path which progressively elevates his consciousness from the physical to the moral and ultimately to the spiritual dimension of his being.”

KAIA to handle 20,000 pilgrims daily

Sunday 14 June 2015

JEDDAH: The holy month of Ramadan will witness the arrival of around 20,000 Umrah pilgrims daily, Khaled Al-Harbi, director of Haj and Umrah Affairs at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, has said.

“The expected number of pilgrims during Ramadan will be around 500,000, with 99 percent accuracy in flight schedules,” he was quoted by local media as saying.

According to Al-Harbi, the number of pilgrims arriving at the lounges of the airport since the beginning of the Haj and Umrah season until Thursday was 2.345 million in 13,680 flights, while those who left stood at 2.827 million in 14,562 flights.

Al-Harbi said the airport administration and the other bodies including the Passports Directorate, Ministry of Haj, Investigation Department and Saudi Customs are all ready to receive the pilgrims. "The procedure to handle the arrival arrangements of pilgrims will only take about 45 minutes instead of the previous three hours.

“The procedures start with the health ministry staff giving instructions and providing services to the pilgrims. Then the person heads to the passport area, baggage, customs department and to the unified Umrah service provider,” he said.

The total area of the Haj and Umrah lounges’ complex at King Abdulaziz Airport is 510,000 square meters. It includes the eastern pilgrims building with a space of 90,000 square meters and an open area (plaza) of 160,000 square meters, as well as area for parking of 26 aircraft with 10 mobile bridges and two operation centers, an observation tower and 18 travel portals.

The modern lounges accommodate more than 91,000 Haj and Umrah pilgrims and the departure of 84,000 passengers, 312 flights a day at a rate of 13 flights per hour.

Umrah prices take off again

June 13, 2015

Dubai: The cost of the lesser pilgrimage, Umrah, has begun to shoot up by four hundred per cent once again as Ramadan approaches.

Hundreds of people from the middle income group are complaining that their aspirations to undertake the pilgrimage are being thwarted by excessive commercialisation of the pilgrimage services by travel agents.

Adding to their woes are the new restrictions, apparently being placed by the Saudi Arabian authorities.

Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage and part of Prophet Mohammad’s (PBUH) traditions that can be performed at any time of the year, except during the days of Haj.

However, the month of Ramadan is the peak season for Umrah as millions converge at two of Islam’s holiest sites in Makkah and Madinah.

“I was looking forward to undertaking the pilgrimage along with my family during Ramadan, but at the current rates I don’t think I can afford the trip even if I travel alone. I was planning to spend the last 10 days of Ramadan in Makkah but the travel agents are not accepting my applications now; they are asking me apply only in Ramadan to ensure that I end up paying more,” said Shams Qadir, an Indian resident based in Sharjah.

A seven-day Umrah trip by bus during the off season costs around Dh1,000 per head, including the costs of visa, two-way bus fare and shared room accommodation in Makkah and Madinah. A similar trip now costs around Dh2,000 and, by the second half of Ramadan, it is expected to cost around Dh4,000 to Dh5,000.

Government of Saudi Arabia issues the Umrah visas free of cost but an aspiring pilgrim has to process the application through approved agents who charge around Dh350 to Dh400 during non-Ramadan season.

But to the pilgrims’ dismay, the travel agents have now stopped offering visa-only services, obliging people to purchase packages that include visa, hotel accommodation and travel fare. To top that the visa duration has also been slashed to 15 days.

“We have stopped accepting visa-only applications, because we don’t get the approvals from the Saudi authorities. It is a prerequisite that every pilgrim entering Saudi Arabia on Umrah visa has his or her prearranged accommodation and return tickets, without which we cannot process the applications,” an agent at Sharjah Airport Travel Agency (SATA) told Gulf News.

Understandably, the new requirements have not gone down well with many pilgrims who like to drive to Makkah and make their own arrangements for accommodation.

“The travel agents are forcing people to pay for four-star hotel rooms when actually I can arrange a decent room for myself at an affordable rate. Also, they are not issuing visas to those who want to go on their own because they want to make more money through sale of bus and air tickets. This is blatant exploitation and there is nobody to put a check on these people,” said another aspiring pilgrim.

According to sources, around 150,000 Umrah pilgrims travel from UAE every year, half of them during Ramadan.

There are around 35 approved Umrah travel agents in Dubai and Sharjah and around 12 agents in Abu Dhabi, in addition to dozens of sub-agents.

Each agency has a limited quota of visas that they can process during the peak season that begins a month before Ramadan and lasts till the end of Ramadan and, according to pilgrims, the agents hoard visas to create artificial demand before selling the travel documents at exorbitant rates during Ramadan.

A statement from the company said the amount of water pumped to Makkah daily during the summer averaged 543,000 cubic meters, of which 540,000 cubic meters is from the Shuaiba plant, in addition to 3,000 cubic meters drawn from wells of the Wadi Malkan Project earmarked to meet the growing demand for water by Umrah pilgrims.

The statement said the company has been filling all water tanks in Makkah, with a total storage capacity of about 1.4 million cubic meters. This includes the one million cubic meter tank in Moaisem, the new desalination tanks, and 24 other tanks.

NWC's Abdullah Hassanain indicated that the daily production capacity of the filling station in Kudaee will be increased by 50,000 cubic meters; Al-Kaaki by 45,000 cubic meters; 25,000 cubic meters at Moaisem station; and 3,000 cubic meters at the Arafat supply station in addition to deploying more water trucks at filling stations.

He said the operating plan included the preparation and maintenance of operating and maintenance centers of water networks and environmental services. Its eight centers employ 68 teams operating in all districts of the city.

The company provides all requirements of the field teams, including advanced communication systems to ensure the speedy identification and prompt action in cases of breakdowns. They also clean the major and branch supply networks across the city. There are 215 vehicles to deliver their services to all districts, he said.

Hot, long Ramadan this year

Temperature could reach 50 degrees
in many areas in the Kingdom

Monday, 15 June 2015 - 28 Shaban 1436

JEDDAH — Temperatures during the holy month of  Ramadan this year could reach 50 degrees Celsius in many areas in the Kingdom, according to the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME).

Ramadan this year will also be of long duration, PME said in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency on Sunday.

This year summer solstice, the longest day of the year, will fall on Sunday (Ramadan 4), according to the Umm Al-Qura calendar.

The day in Makkah will be 13-hour-27-minute-long, in Madinah 13-hour-41-minute-long, in Riyadh 13-hour-42-minute-long and in Dammam 13-hour-49-minute-long, according to a PME center report.

Sight Ramadan crescent tomorrow

The Supreme Court has called on all Muslims in the Kingdom to sight the crescent of the blessed month of Ramadan on Tuesday evening.

The Supreme Court requested that whoever sees the crescent with naked eyes or binoculars should report to the nearest court and register his testimony, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Sunday.

However a Saudi astronomer expects that the first day of the fasting month will be Thursday (June 18).

Mulhim Mohammed Hindi, a researcher at King Abdulaziz University’s faculty of astronomical and space sciences, told Al-Riyadh Arabic daily that the Ramadan moon this year will be born at 5.05 p.m. local time Tuesday, June 16, and disappear before sunset the same day.

“There is no possibility of the crescent being sighted anywhere in the Kingdom on Tuesday,” he said.

Hindi said the moon will go down 13 minutes before sunset in the eastern regions and nine minutes in the western areas.

He said in this case the month of Shaban will be 30 days, making Thursday the first day of Ramadan.

‘Makkah is the real paradise on earth’

Monday 15 June 2015

JEDDAH: A visiting Indian journalist has described Makkah as the “real Paradise on earth.”

Masoom Moradabadi, a well-known and respected Urdu language editor from India, recently performed Umrah along with his wife and 300 other pilgrims of different nationalities. Their 10-day trip was organized by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance following an invitation issued by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman.

“It was a divine call. I was in Srinagar (Kashmir), which Moghul Emperor Babar had described as paradise on earth. But the call I received from the Saudi Embassy in Delhi, was an invitation to visit the real paradise on earth — the Holy Kaaba in Makkah’s Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah,” he said. He had previously visited Makkah, but said this time it was more exciting. “I was in a delegation that included Islamic scholars from other countries, including Pakistan, Nepal, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.”

He said praying Fajr in the Prophet’s Mosque was a beautiful experience. “Since we were part of the official delegation, we had the opportunity to visit some historic sites, which showed that the Saudi government has taken care to preserve these places as part of their cultural heritage.”

He said he was pleasantly surprised by the efforts of the King Fahd Qur’an Printing Complex to translate the holy book into 63 languages, which was aimed at propagating the message of Islam across the world.

“The visit to Quba Mosque, the adjacent museum of Madinah history and graves of the Martyrs of Uhud was spiritually exhilarating.”

He was also impressed with the skilled work done to prepare the Kiswa, the cover of the Kaaba, with Qur’anic verses in gold thread.

The group was also taken to see the construction taking place at the Grand Mosque. “Personally supervised by King Salman, the project, when completed by 2020, will accommodate nearly 5 million pilgrims during the Haj. This work has been undertaken keeping in mind the growing numbers of pilgrims for Umrah and Haj.”

“It is not only a physical expansion of the Grand Mosque, but has an equal emphasis on extending facilities for pilgrims, and to ensure an orderly flow of visitors, who throng the holy place every moment of the day and night.”

The visit gave the delegation the opportunity to meet imams of the two holy mosques Khaled Al-Ghamdi and Ali Al-Huzaifi. He said they both emphasized the need to propagate the real message of Islam, “as a religion of peace, tranquility and universal brotherhood.”

He said the imams slammed those trying to slander the religion, and highlighted their concern over growing differences between religious groups in some countries. “They expressed their anguish over the conspiracy to defame Saudi Arabia,” he said.

Steep hike in prices of
Umrah packages from Riyadh

Monday 15 June 2015

RIYADH: Travel operators have raised the rate of Riyadh’s Umrah package to SR180 from the current SR90 per pilgrim for the Ramadan season.

The five-day package, which would cover the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, will commence on Monday, they said.

This year, the peak season coincides with the summer holidays and a large number of vacationers, including Saudis, are expected for Umrah.

The package includes a return fare by a luxury coach and accommodation. An additional SR50 will be charged if the pilgrim wants to stay in a star hotel.
The pilgrimage will cover Madinah and Makkah, but those wishing to go only to Makkah from Riyadh and back, can do so. However, the cost will be the same, that is SR180, the operators said.

A travel operator said the weekend package to Makkah and Madinah starts from Riyadh at 4 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and ends on Friday and Saturday midnight respectively. “Each family will get a large room while a bachelor will share a room with three pilgrims. Children aged under 12 years will be charged half the fare.”

Another travel agent said a five-day package to Makkah and Madinah, including travel and accommodation, will cost a pilgrim SR250 for a two- day stay in a three-star hotel in Madinah and another two-day lodging in a similar hotel in Makkah. The journey begins on Monday and ends on Friday. The pilgrims would leave Makkah after Juma prayers so that they reach Riyadh around midnight. Pilgrims are given an option to choose a five-star facility for an additional payment .

There are nearly 300 Umrah travel operators in the capital, but they are largely concentrated in the city center of Batha.

During the journey, coaches stop over at three points, for Magrib and Isha prayers and dinner, and at Meeqat in Taif for allowing the pilgrims to wear the ihram.

The local hotels in Madinah in liaison with tour operators have arranged tours to historical sites for those pilgrims who come to Madinah to visit the Prophet’s Mosque.

The places of interests in Madinah include Quba Mosque — the first mosque built by the Holy Prophet, Qiblatain Mosque where the Qibla was shifted from Baitul Muqadas (Al-Aqsa Mosque) to Holy Kaaba when the Prophet (peace be upon him) was conducting prayers and the graveyard on the foothills of Mount Uhud where Islamic fighters were martyred in the battle were buried.

The Meeqat points include Dhu’l-Hulayfah (9km from Madinah), Juhfah (190km to the northwest of Makkah), Qarn Al-Manazil (90km) to the east of Makkah, Dhat Irq (85km toward the northeast side of Makkah) and Yalamlam (50km to the southeast of Makkah).

Mosques prepared for Ramadan

Tuesday 16 June 2015

RIYADH: On a directive from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance, extensive arrangements are being made in all mosques to accommodate the additional rush of worshippers during the holy month of Ramadan.

The Supreme Court on Sunday called on Muslims across the Kingdom to look for the Ramadan crescent on Tuesday, as it will decide the first day of the fasting month. Anyone who sights the crescent with the naked eye should register his testimony with the nearest court or report it to a competent authority, the court said.

The department of mosques, which functions under the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance, directed imams and muezzins of all mosques in the Kingdom to ensure an adequate supply of power and water during the holy month to cater to the increased number of Muslims, who will visit the mosques for Taraweeh which follows the regular Isha prayer.

“We are making every effort to provide worshippers a conducive environment to offer their prayers with serenity and sanctity at the mosque,” the imam said, adding that loudspeakers outside mosque premises will not be used during Taraweeh prayers according to government instructions.

The imam said that Isha prayers will be conducted approximately two hours after breakfast followed by Taraweeh prayers without a break from 8:45 p.m.
Midnight prayers, (Qiyamul Lail) will be conducted from the 20th day of Ramadan till the end of the holy month. These prayers will begin at 1 a.m. for a duration of one hour.

Tents will also be constructed adjacent to mosques to enable worshippers to break their fast at sunset. Arrangements have been made for all those who come for Maghreb prayers during Ramadan to have their breakfast at these tents.

Loudspeaker ban for Taraweeh prayers

Tuesday 16 June 2015

MAKKAH: The Ministry of Islamic Affairs in Makkah has ordered mosques in Makkah not to use outside loudspeakers during Taraweeh prayers in Ramadan.

Mosques would only be allowed to use outside speakers if they do not disturb worshippers at other mosques in the city. There are about 45 mosques that would have Taraweeh prayers in the holy city, said Talal Al-Aqail, spokesman of the ministry.

In a statement issued recently, Al-Aqail said that imams should not accept any donations for iftar meals unless they are approved by the ministry, bought at reputable and licensed eateries, and overseen by them and other mosque officials.

Al-Aqail said the ministry has also drawn up a plan to ensure it has daily reports on the performance of officials at mosques. This information would also be used to monitor maintenance of the places of worship.

Imams have been told not to leave their posts during Ramadan unless necessary. If they are forced to do so, they must appoint someone to take over their responsibilities, Al-Aqail said.

He said mosques have been furnished with carpets and Qur’an copies. The ministry has also assigned people who have memorized the Qur’an to lead the night prayers, he said.
