Asslamo Allaikum Brother,
As an American I had to put up with this for many years and the article which you have posted has been on our site for many years:
http://www.central-mosque.com/fiqh/khutar.htm
However, if this is the situation which you find yourself in (or anyone else) then I suggest that you thoroughly discuss the matter with the Ulama of Hanafi Madhab in absolute detail.
There are some details in this matter which should be discussed as things are not as cut and dry as the Fatwa of our beloved and respected Shaykh (Mufti) Taqi Usmani (HA).
NEVERTHELESS, the Sunnah is to deliver Khutbah in Arabic and there is no disagreement amongst Ulama on the matter (Hanafees, Malikees, Shaf'aees or Hanbalees OR even Salafees) and I personally HATE Non-Arabic Khutbahs.
The million dollar question is "Is Arabic a condition for the Khutbah in the Hanafi Madhab?" And "What comprises Khutbah according to Hanafi Madhab?"
Here is a short refutation with a Salafi brother (at work) and me on the matter for your interest.
Salafi: Why do you give Khutbahs in Arabic when most people don't understand Arabic?
Muadh Khan: There is no evidence from the Sunnah or Salaf of delivering Khutbah in Non-Arabic. Sahaba (RA) conquered Roman and Persian areas and they or the Taba'een (RA) or Taba-Taba'een (RA) never delivered Khutbah in native languages.
Salafi: But Khubah should be delivered in local language so people understand.
Muadh Khan: I know nothing but the words of Allah (SWT), Rasool (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) and Salaf (RA) so bring me evidence, your logic and understanding DOES NOT impress me and nor is it Hujja for me in Islam!
Salafi: Do you have any evidence to say that Khutbah cannot be given in Non-Arabic?
Muadh Khan: Are you sure that you want to take the conversation in that direction?
Salafi: Yes, where is your evidence that Khutbah cannot be given in Non-Arabic?
Muadh Khan: Here is the verse about Khutbah:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِنْ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَذَرُوا الْبَيْعَ ذَلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
[62:9] O you who believe, when the call for Salah (prayer) is proclaimed on Friday, hasten for the remembrance of Allah, and leave off business. That is much better for you, if you but know.
There is no disagreement amongst the Scholars that Dhikr here is meant to be Khutbah and it is a condition for Friday prayer to be valid.
I don't know any evidence from Qur'aan & Sunnah which instructs Dhikr can be done in a language other then Arabic!
If you want to FLIP the methodology of Islam and ask a cheeky question "What is the evidence of prohibition of giving Khutbah in Non-Arabic?
Then I also reply with to you with a cheeky question, "What is the evidence that the Birthday of Rasool-ullah (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) cannot be celebrated?"
Why do you adopt the issue of "no evidence in case of Mawlid" but ask me to give you evidence of prohibition on the issue of "Non-Arabic Khutbah?"
Isn't this double-standards? :- )
Muadh Khan: Heads you loose! Tails your loose! Unless and until you bring evidence from Qur'aan and Sunnah and the Salaf (RA) we will take the superior method of following the Sunnah and deliver the Khutbah in Arabic!
Jazakullah Khairun
Asslamo Allaikum Brother,
Khutbah is Dhik'r of Allah (SWT) and not solely for learning. The problem is occuring because:
The Sunnah is to have a "short Khutbah" in Arabic and for men to be regular in the Mosques and in contact with Ulama on a regular basis and learn on a continual basis.
Women to also be in contact with Ulama and learn on a continual basis.
In the West many Christians visit the Church on a "Sunday" and weekly Sermon is their ONLY means of getting "religion" and this is obviously in contradiction to Islam which is 24x7 with the Masjid being the focal point of a Muslims' life.
So having a "Non-Arabic" Khutbah is masking problems in our communities and people come to Friday to get their "FIX".
Consider the incident of this young Sahabi (RA) woman who memorised a Chapter of the Qur'aan by listening, alone.
http://www.daruliftabirmingham.co.uk/Quran/Surah%20Qaaf.htm
Umm Bisham hint Haritha b. Nu'man (RA) said: Our oven and that of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) was one for two years, or for one year or for a part of a year; and I learnt" Qaf. By the Glorious Qur'an" from no other source than the tongue of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) who used to recite it every Friday on the pulpit when he delivered the sermon to the people. (Muslim)
All of this points to an Arabic Khutbah.
Asslamo Allaikum,
I am not sure if their Jummuah is invalid according to Hanafi Madhab.
Allah (SWT) knows best.
Asslamo Allaikum,
That doesn't mean that the Friday prayer is invalid. Please ask and consult the Scholars again.
Jazakullah Khairun
OK, brother.
Jazakullah Khairun
This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
Please wait...
