I am beginning to think that to much reading on ruqyah and related stuff is a recipe for depression.
disclaimers like " Sihr can be very difficult to remove and take a long committed course of treatment to remove" and "Even if it is removed there is a strong chance that it might come back even stronger" or that "The Sahir might have done multiple forms of sihr, if one knot is untied and removed, then immediately the next one takes over". And "sometimes a person sihr can never be removed."

Enough to drive anyone who is afflicted into despair, and start asking... "why me?"

Then on the opposite spectrum you have the Tassawuf shuyookh "These days if someone is afflicted with difficulties they immediately , assume its sihr....dont go around following Amils, put your trust in Allah, if you have strong Imaan nothing will affect you." nYes but how does the average person obtain this degree of Imaan? "If you are enduring difficulties it is probably due to your sins, make tawbah" So then you have person thinking I made Tawbah and tawbah why am I not being cured, maybe I am so evil that my tawbah is not being accepted... So more despair.
So then you get others thinking since my tawbah not being accepted might as well engage in all the vices of the duniyah.

I think to much self reading of tassawuf is probably a recipe for depression as well.

Probably the reason why salafis are popular in this field they seem to keep things simple and positive, "Brother have tawheed in your heart, believe in the oneness of Allah, always have good opinion of Allah and have hope in his mercy, know there is a blessing within every difficulty Allah is Ar rahman his rahmah encompasses every thing." Ofcourse with the addition of "Brother stay away from shirk, biddah and deviant groups, all you need is true Tawheed".

so true, I have seen it get worse in someone else, treatment seemed to have worked, only for it to come back stronger.

Yes and there is the other end, where your taught that your self afflicted and incurable due to your own sins...but yes I also believe that abstaining from sins and fulfilling all obligatory duties is a right step in acquiring Allah's mercy.

I also know that once afflicted you can never be 100% again.

Allah knows best... we can only keep making effort in finding cure and implementing and accept the rest as qadr of Allah.

In my experience many people have mental Health issues and because the methods of their Amil or Shaykh is not helping they get depressed and it affects their Eemaan.

This Mufti Junaid Saheb is openly claiming that there is no such thing as Cancer so why doesn't he cure thousands and make a point of Islam???

People are in Despair already my brother, and they go from one shaikh to another regardless of his masah, in desperation because their lives are stuck or have been completely ruined and I've seen this myself at first hand.

They go from shaykh to shaykh, brother to brother only to be fobbed off, only to be told brother it's nothing it's in your head just do Qulls and you'll be fine. The truth is the shaykh of the old don't exist today and the ones we have they are far from them. Sihr was a field that sufiya mashaykh would deal with, some were so powerful that they could remove just by looking you, so where are these shaykh these days?? They don't exist and it's just their worshippers who have bigged them up and made them to be something their not. In fact some of the talks done by big tasaweuf shaykhs of today on this topic is alarming, heard one the other day and the shaykh totally downplayed it, was gutted to hear and it just reminded me of the thousands out there who are suffering and sad thing is when shaykhs own kith and kin are affected he will never use those methods that's he's been preaching, he'll do whatever he can to remove it as he understand the implications of it, so why the double standards??

People are desperate for relief and spend thousands in the process. Have we forgotten what it was like on Sf and how any sihr related thread would get clogged up with people, one thing they had in common was they all were looking for someone to help them.

The salafis despite being weak etc have done one thing which is good and that is transparency to a certain extent. However our own ulema and tasaweuf mashaykh have pretty much failed people here Big Time.

When you keep going from shaykh to shaykh of course it will affect you one way or another, you know where your stuck, your life is ruined or almost ruined, then my brother it's natural to thing to feel helpless, depressed, strong feelings of angst or as you say they have mental illnesses.

There's a few things I disagree with mufti junaid too, and his ruqya method won't be for all. Most need a bit more guidance and more one to one, however he does say this method is a last resort for people who can't find no one and yes Quran can even cure cancer no doubt, however his view on it being related to sihr, many Arab mashaykh believe it to be related to big diseases and he just stated that view.

The biggest setback in any approach is the person who wants instant "RESULTS" I think this is where they go wrong and can't be cured.

Everyone knows the Hadith about honey, cupping, blackseed etc that it cures so why doesn't it seems to work? Simple, it WILL work but it requires FULL conviction. People don't have full conviction, they go for treatment with the attitude, "let's see if this stuff is real or fake"

When I tell someone about any type of treatment, the first thing I tell them is the Hadith about the companion whose brother was suffering from stomach pain. The prophet (saw) instructed him to give honey to his brother, however, the honey made it worse, then again he asked and again he was told to give honey, then again it got worse. Eventually he was told that Allah doesn't lie, his brothers stomach is lying, then after understanding that and taking honey, he was cured.

The problem isn't the cure, the problem is in us. We lie, we don't have the faith needed for the cure. If we did, then use, why not, Qur'an will cure cancer.

maybe Mashayikh always downplay sihr and amils because the number of people who think they have sihr done on them far, far outnumbers the number of people who actually do...

especially amongst indians, pakistanis and bangladeshis...just like every ghori needs to be on a gluten-free diet, every desi needs a wazifa for hasad, badnazri, jadoo.

I commend your husne dhann

But akhi to make out that it's nothing is another thing and to totally downplay it is not good either, in fact sihr is rife amongst desi and African communities.

These things have ruined people lives, you make a point in sarcasm in the end but it actually is a very good point. In this day and age everyone needs a wazifa to protect themselves and those we have in the Quran and Sunnah known as protection from calamities awraad also known as masnoon duas to be done morning and evening. Very important along with salaah but often neglected.

Yes there is a element of people not actually having sihr etc and people thinking everything is sihr related, but the Generalisation that is made is quite offensive especially to people who do, our ulema and sufi mashaykh have failed here and people will find this statement as a blasphemy.

A Maulana I knew used to say with the coming of Dajjal these things will start to occur more, it was his theory but to be honest it's true just look around you and you'll see how many are desperately seeking ilaaj, I know many who have given up because either the treatment is a year long or they are just tired of all the fakes and tired of going to one place and then the next.

True any cure is effected by a persons conviction...Years ago I read a book written by a Colorectal specialist, he stated that amongst hundreds of his patients one stood out in particular, after being informed she had terminal cancer of the Stomach, she asked what were the chances of survival the doctor told her that for 95% of patients it is terminal. she said, "So you mean out of every 20 people who get this Cancer one person is cured" "Yes" responded the doctor. She cheerfully replied "Well thank you Doctor and I would like to inform you I am going to be that ONE person." This middle aged womans disposition never waivered she maintained a positive attitude and certainty that she would be cured, and did not allow any thought contrary to enter her mind. And within months she was cured.

And there has been vast research, done on the effect of a persons Mental attitude to effect a cure of illnesses over the last century, going back to Dr Emil Coue who discovered what is known as the Placebo effect, he even opened a clinic in which his method that was known as Coueism achieved startling results,
His patients were told to repeat an affirmation "Day by day and each and every way I am getting better and better" through out the day verbally and mentally and every time one of the nurses approached the patient she would repeat the formula " Day by day and each and every way, you are looking better and better." He had some phenomenal results.

The opposite of the Placebo affect is something referred to as the Nocebo effect were an individual has a negative charged mind and sees the worst possible outcome in every situation, which results in the person being in a constant state of anxiety, stress and feeling despondent the result being the recovery of an illnes is hindered. And with this negative approach the everyday challenges, that one faces whether financial or family problems etc. seem to be never ending. The following couplet best reflects these contradictory mental attitudes:

'Two prisoners looked out of from prison bars
one saw the mud the other saw the stars.'

From my understanding of what Mufti Junaid stated is that Nazar/Ayn can be a cause for many illnesses, and when one is using ruqyah in dealing with cancer one should take the mental attitude and approach that there is no such thing as cancer, and that the Quran is a healing for every illness. I fail to see what he stated that was wrong.

Some factors to bear in mind when listening to his lectures is that he gives loads of information and tries to be as comprehensive as possible. So therefore a person might need to listen to a lecture several times to fully comprehend everything that he has stated.

Second thing to bear in mind is that his method is based on self treatment with the use of Ruqyah and the audience he is primarily addressing is the Indian community within India, generally speaking in India an individual will have the emotional support of a large and extended family. So the patient when they are feeling down will more then likely have someone there to give them a peptalk and help re-inforce the belief that things will get better....someone living in the west may not have that kind of emotional support, so they will probably need more direct treatment and one to one support.

Another thing in relation to Mufti Junaids bayaans Is that generally speaking , even an average villager in India who maybe a simple farmer, a goat herder , and totally illiterate will probably have a greater conviction that the cure for all problems and illnesses is from Allah and Allah has power over all things. Whilst those of us living in the west given the nature of our fitnah filled environment along with the western concept which has been ingrained in us of using a rational approach to everything, will find that although we may have listened to thousands of hours of audio lectures, and read hundreds of religious books our conviction can be far less then the Simple illiterate villager in India, we are filled with doubts and despair at every turn, so as a first step we probably need to work on strengthening our Imaan.

"We dont say that a medicine cures we say that Allah cures" Shaykh Hamza Yusuf.

And another thing I remember a shaykh mentioning years ago, is that if we trust and rely on Allah at every turn and difficulties then we will find Allah is there for us in times of major difficulties. Although this quote has stuck in my mind and I probably heard it more then a generation ago, I am only now beginning to understand it.

Only just realised that if you have headache then when before a person takes a paracetamol, you should make an intention in your heart that 'O Allah nothing can cure except through your permission, grant me cure through the means of this medicine'.

Similarly after a tough day you might relax with a cup of tea, a person make dua and intention before drinking the tea 'O Allah help relieve my stress through the beneficial properties contained in this tea and I seek refuge from anything that maybe harmful within it.' And this can be applied to anything one eats or consumes, and by regular practice Insha'Allah our conviction and trust in Allah will increase and we will find that even major illnesses and difficulties no longer will have a negative effect on our attitude, with the result being we will due to our conviction will find a quicker relief from those difficulties.

On a sidenote and I digress Interestingly several studies have been done on Tea including the first double blind placebo study carried out by the university of central London showing that tea does actually contain stress relieving properties
