AsalaamzWW,

Hackneys Homeless

Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "Forgiveness was granted to an unchaste woman who coming upon a dog panting and almost dead with thirst at the mouth of a well, took off her shoe and drew some water for it. On that account she was forgiven." He was asked whether people received a reward for what they did to animals and replied, "A reward is given in connection with every living creature." (Bukhari and Muslim) = If that is what was given by Allah (Most High) to this women for giving water to a dog imagine the rewards given when aiding a human who has no shelter (especially in these current freezing nights which are the coldness ever on record) and no food.

There's an opportunity available between 6:30pm and 8pm (just one and a half hours) on any of the Thursday's in March (4th, 11th, 18th or 25th) to help homeless individuals in Hackney in a 'night shelter' (a place that provides hot food and a bed for the night) in Stokenewington. If you are interested please dropan email to Hackney Masaajid Cup on [email protected] stating which date/s you are available from those mentioned above.

The role that you'd be expected to do is setting up tables, chairs and plates for the meals (no cooking/serving) and setting up the beds for that particular night - this whole 'Setting Up' process usually takes between an hour to an hour and a half.

Alhumdolillah a few individuals have already given their names though we can always do with a few more hands. It doesn't have to be all the Thursdays it can only be one evening.

Please forward this email to other locals who might be interested.

Jazakallah

bump - starts from tonight.....!

The Hackney Winter Night Shelter (HWNS) www.hwns.org.uk has been running for many years helping the most vulnerable in our local community at a time of year that is very hard for them (winter). First and foremost it provides hot food and warm overnight accommodation and in the long term it provides support for issues like drug and alcohol abuse, family breakdown, financial issues etc.

Again this year there are volunteering opportunities available from January through to March 2011 at the Shelter. Madina Masjid, Masjid e Quba, Musalla an Noor, NLMCC and Tawhid Boys School (so far) are also giving their support this year by advertising this initiative via their notice boards to get as many volunteers to help as possible.

Though there are a number of participating Churches in Hackney the one we (approx 15 volunteers incl scholars) volunteered at last march was St Paul's opposite Stokenewington Police Station

I have attached a copy of a PDF which details "Ways of Volunteering", it consists of the following areas:-
The Cooking Team, 5.00 - 9.00 pm.
The Setting-up Team, 6.30 - 8.00 pm
The Welcome Team, 8.00 - 9.30 pm.
The Overnight Team, 9.30pm - 8.00 am.
The Breakfast Team, 6.00 - 8.00 am.
The shelter closes officially at 8am.
(Please look at the file as it gives a detailed breakdown of the activities involved - obviously we won't be able to help in the prep of any haraam food nor its serving).

If you are interested please drop an email [email protected] stating which date/s you are available - most likely we will be volunteering again on all the Thursday's throughout Jan, Feb and March. If Thursdays are not practical for you please let me know as inshallah other days at other Hackney churches may be available.

Additionally this year we'd like to see if the Muslim community can provide hot food 3 times over the three months (once per month). If there's anyone or family or group of people or muslim organisation/s that can help with providing hot cooked food for approx 45 people once during the 3 months please drop me an email.

Rhythms of Life International

Aside from the above initiative 'Rhythms of Life International' - rhythmsoflife.org.uk/ - based in Dalston (a totally separate org to HNWS) are collecting sleeping bags, duvets and gloves/scarfs (or donation towards its purchase) to give out to local homeless. If anyone has any sleeping bags and/or duvets in good condition please contact them or drop me an email [email protected] and inshallah they'll try their best to collect.

Thank Allah for the blessings given to us in terms of food and shelter (amongst the countless others we take for granted). May Allah make it easy for those less fortunate and may he alleviate their hardships and sufferings.

Please forward this email to other locals who might be interested.
Jazakallah
