The real estate market around the Haram Mosque in the Saudi City ofMecca (Makkah) has experienced a 50 per cent surge compared to lastyear, according to local industry expert Bandar Al-Homaidah.

TheHaram Mosque (Al-Masjid al-H?aram) is the largest mosque in the world.It surrounds the Kaaba, the place which Muslims turn towards whileoffering daily prayer and is considered to be the holiest place onearth by Muslims.

Mr Al-Homaidah, a member of the Real EstateCommittee in the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), toldthe Arab News there would be a residential crisis in the city due tothe construction of infrastructure including circular roads and the newexpansion scheme of the Haram Mosque courtyard.

The courtyard expansion will involve the demolition of around 1,000 properties comprising 4,000 residential units.

"Theproperties to be demolished are within 400 meters in the Al-EzzahStreet toward the Jabal Kaaba in the north western direction of theHaram Mosque," explained Abdullah Ibrahim Al-Saggat, chairman of theproperty assessment committee in the Makkah region.

BandarAl-Homaidah, member of the real estate committee in the chamber, added:"While the new expansion would accommodate several thousands ofpilgrims, it will also raise the rent demand by 20 per cent compared tolast year."

It was said that the available residential plots inthe city would not be able to accommodate 75 per cent of the displacedby the project.

New expansion can hold 250,000 more worshipers at Haram Mosque
Makkah - Dhul Hijjah 29, 1428/ January 07, 2008 - The planned expansion projects in the northern and northwestern courtyards of the Haram Mosque in Makkah will increase the capacity of these courtyards to at least 250,000 worshipers and the total capacity of the holy mosque to 750,000. Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz has approved a plan for the expansion of the Haram Mosque's northern and northwestern courtyards, Prince Miteb, minister of municipal and rural affairs, announced on Saturday. The project also includes construction of pedestrian tunnels and a service station. The royal approval covers expropriation of real estate on the northern and northwestern sides of the mosque, covering an area of 300 square meters.
The king's directive for further expansion of the Haram Mosque is aimed at improving the services being offered to the Haj and Umrah pilgrims whose numbers register remarkable increase with every passing of the year. Buildings in an area of 300 square meters area would be demolished to make way for the expansion. The market price per square meter of real estate required for the new expansion project is estimated at SR250,000, according to real estate sources. The total value of compensation to owners of 1000 properties to be expropriated is estimated at SR6 billion, Osama Farghali, a real estate expert, said.
Farghali gave the following estimates per square meter: SR50,000 for the interior properties. SR100,000 for real estate overlooking the main streets in Tal'at Al-Falaq District. SR250,000 for land overlooking the Grand Mosque. Farghali said development of the central area surrounding the Grand Mosque, particularly outside the first and second ring roads, has driven land prices up. During the recent Haj, rental rate for pilgrim accommodations was as high as SR1600 for places outside the third ring road while it was SR2500 within the sphere of the second ring road.
Last year, King Abdullah had approved various projects worth SR 10 billion to further expand the facilities and improve services for pilgrims at the Haram Mosque. The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques has been supervising implementation of these projects, of which the most important ones are the expansion of Masaie (the track between Safa and Marwah), and construction of a 14-meter wide, 70-meter long pedestrian bridge across the courtyard of the Grand Mosque. The second and last phase of the expansion of Masaie is being implemented by the Bin Laden Company.

Honestly speaking, the beauty, uniqueness and essence of Madeenah no longer exists in the modern state of the art Madinah. The alleys, markets and the love there was when I first went is now aggression and complaints about the most minor things. I mean litterally, "The AC is too loud", "The only way you'll get there is by pushing, it's gotta be done" (no it doesn't).. Anyway this is about the building, I don't understand how the government can allow the most vile beggars to lurk outside Masjid an Nabawi and plan such things. It's just a personal view.

The Images looks nice...but i don't really think this is what is needed........ is it necessary?....can the money not be used for other things.......This may just add to the problems there!

I would request Saudi Government to stop all this disturbance of the Haram site, and leave it in orignal form. The Muslim throughbout the 1400 years history has used the same site with the orignal inner feelings.

Modernization is doing nothing good, when the people cannot have the feelings of the actual happenings at the prophet Mohammad (SAW) time and the advent of Islam period.

There is plenty of news with daily updates regarding the Expansion and much much more here www.muftisays.com/forums/27-sharing-portal/5907-makkah-ne...

The current work being done is much needed, the ummah is also growing rapidly.

The expansion itself may not be so necessary, but the current Mataf work and the total reconstruction is much needed. Please see news thread regarding this.
