Important: Are you wearing pig skin?
Answered by Shaykh Abdurrahman ibn Yusuf Mangera

I bought few days ago a leather jacket made in China. Now while I was wearing it one brother told me that it was made of pig leather. Now I want to know

1) What shall I do if some body says it is made of pig and there is no way to find it out if it is true?
2) If it is really pig stuff then what is the Sharia says about it.

Assalamu alaykum
In the name of Allah the Gracious the Merciful.
1. You must determine whether the garment is made of pigskin or not. If one person does not know then ask someone who works in a leather store.
2.If you cannot be sure then it would still be better to abstain from wearing it since the Sharia has considered it essentially impure [najis al-'ayn] and cannot be purified in any way.
The following may help to determine whether it is of pigskin. However, consult an expert in a leather store if still in doubt.
And Allah knows best.
Abdurrahman Ibn Yusuf
Are You Wearing Pigskin Leather?

It is amazing that many Muslims do not know if they are actually wearing a leather jacket or a shoe or carrying a purse or any other leather product that is made of pigskin.

At many occasions I have pointed it out to folks about it. Many have listened and many have not, I keep seeing them wearing those again and again. Imagine how many mosques, centers and other holy places they may have made NAJAS. Their prayers may not have been accepted. Do you think you are one of them or will you be one on them?

Here are some tips to find what a pigskin is, what it looks like and where it is used?

Where it is Used?

General Leather Products:Heavily used in Chinese and other developing or under-developing countries.
Shoes & Joggers:Full Leather suede looking Shoes or inner linings.
Jackets:Full Leather suede looking knee long and waist long full sleeve or sleeveless jackets.
Purses:Women and men purses. Full leather or linings.
Brief Cases:Men and Women leather brief cases, usually inner linings are pigskins. But look out for rest of the leather.

Why is it Used?

Price & Availability:Pigskin is cheap and easily available in most countries. It is lighter that real suede made of Cow. Due to low price it is easier to market and sell. It was first used as liners as it is really thin and strong. Soon it was used in most products as profit margins are comparatively high.

How to recognized it?

Mostly, it looks like suede. But it is thinner. It has spots on it. Kind of depressions or little holes that never go through. It seems like some has used spikes to try to pin through it. But these spots are only on one side.

Usually, on the other side of the leather, you will see squeezed round shaped spots. These spots may not be very prominent on this side. If you look very closely at the pictures given, you will have no problem in identifying pigskin. If you are not sure, read labels or ask the store keepers. Do not ask them if these are pigskins. Let them tell you what kind of leather it is. Do not take their words.

Ask for proof.

Hard to Recognize

Hardest is to recognize the pigskin that is being used for non-suede type leather products. But with a close examination spots and holes can be detected. This type of leather needs much concentration.

Flattened leather with thin look and equal-distance spots.

Picture # 2
Very prominent Spots & Pin Holes. Suede like texture is visible.

Picture # 3
Flattened and soft looking but spots are visible.

Asslamo Allaikum Brother,

Very good question, Masha'Allah

I am assuming that you are Shaf'ae so Sertu may be necessary since in the Shaf'ae Madhab the skin of dog & pig CANNOT be purified by tanning. As a general rule if you touched heavy Najasah in the Sha'fae Madhab and it is WET then you will have to do Sertu and the opinion slightly differs if its dry. Please consult Ulama of the Shaf'ae Madhab and post the reply here as I am also intersted, if you don't have access to Shaf'ae Ulama please reply and I will post it to a Shaf'ae Mufti and put the Shaykh's reply here.

Actually I sending an email to Shaf'ae Ulama (even if you are Hanafi) because this is a good and curious question and very pertinent to us in the west.

Caution! This query is for Shaf'aees and Hanafees should consult Ulama for ruling of their own Madhab.

Q:) If a person touches PIG SKIN in the Shaf'ae Madhab, what is the purification process?

  1. If the PIG skin is wet, what is the legal status of this impurity and how is purification of the hand (or any other body part) performed?
  2. If the PIG skin is dry, what is the legal status of this impurity and how is purification of the hand (or any other body part) performed?
  3. What if the holding of the PIG skin is accidental? Does the legal status of this impurity and puriication thereafter change?

Jazakullah Khairun

I had never heard of the term "sertu" before. I thougt it may have been an error. Jazakallah to the questioner and to brother Muadh. (We are allways learning)

This is what I found out:
How does one perform "sertu" and what are the requirements?
Sertu is a purification from heavy najis. The method is to pour one mixture of water and earth, and 6 pourings of water on the affected area. One can begin with any pouring, either water or the mixture. The earth used must not be contaminated with najis substances.

Also

In what situation must sertu be performed when one comes into contact with a dog?
If both the dog and the person/ item/ area that has come into contact with each other are both dry, there is no need for sertu. Sertu must be performed if either one or both surfaces were wet when they came into contact with each other.

Very interesting reply... : - )

From Safina (Text Book of Shaf'ae Madhab):

Heavy impurity is the impurity from a dog, pig, or their offspring.

Heavy impurity becomes pure by removing it and then washing it seven times,60 one of which should be with earth.61

60 Something that becomes impure by contact and that is restricted to contamination by traces of moisture from dog or pig, whether saliva, urine or anything moist from them, or any of their dry parts that have become moist. If something dry such as the animal‟s breath or hair touches a person, it need only be removed.

61 Earth cannot be substituted with something else like soap or detergent

Fatwa on PIG impurity (ShafiFiqh):

http://www.shafiifiqh.com/?p=945

In conclusion, there are five views transmitted, and they are,

  1. The relied-upon opinion of Imam Shafi [qawl azhar] that a pig’s filth must be washed seven times, one of those being with earth.
  2. An opinion of Imam Shafi that is strong enough to practice upon [muqabil al-azhar] that it must be washed seven times and another substance, like soap, suffices.
  3. An opinion of Imam Shafi that is strong enough to practice upon [muqabil al-azhar] that it must be washed seven times and another substance, like soap, suffices in the absence of earth.
  4. A lesser opinion that another substance, like soap, suffices when using earth will cause damage. This opinion and the three before it (1, 2, 3) apply to pigs and as well dogs.
  5. An opinion of Imam Shafi that is strong enough to practice upon [muqabil al-azhar] that one washing without earth suffices. This is also the ikhtiyar of Imam Nawawi. This opinion applies to pigs only.

This is probably not known to many but as muslims i think its important we all know about this.

when a pig skin is used for something it will always leave a mark that its from pigs. The mark is three dots in a line. There are many shoes these days which are made using pig skin (probably because its cheap to make using it) .

I dont know about men shoes but i know alot of female shoes have them these days. For example in primark ive seen with my owns eyes that majority of the shoes have these three dots and not many people know about it. It quiet disgusting knowing your wearing pig skin on your feet. Mostly the sole has it and soemtimes the sides bits aswell. Heres a picture of some shoes i bought and when i came home i realised they had the three dots unfotunatly.

MashaAllah, This has been discussed many times before, but I think you have done a great job in providing the images.

I have the same converstation with my wife all the time about the shoes issue.

in fact one day we were out buying shoes for my daughter, and they were very cheap. My wife showed them to me and I put them back and explained that they were made from pig skin. Upset she was, but then she turned around and said, they are Muslim, they are buying them! So I told my wife that she should advise the ladies not to do so. It turns out they asked my wife if I was a scholar, which I'm not, so they didn't listen. We ended up buying a very similar pair for a lot more.

People assume that they just cant Pray Salah in them otherwise they can wear it.

Khair, good job.
