As salamu alaikum,

MashAllah there is a very nice section for new mUslims/dawah to non-Muslims on MS..to complement this, can brorthers and sisters please post accurate, credible statistics on Islam conversion in the West. InshAllah such a database would be brilliant for Dawah purposes. Maybe we can generate a beautiful database of powerful stats for dawah InshAllah. Th reaosn isn't so that it is like a trohpy that we go around with and boast - Allah brought them to Deen and He can take them away if He Wills - but it is to get people to contemplate "that Islam is NOT a religion of the Indians and Arabs but a Deen for the whole of mankind, and people of EVERY background ARE becoming Muslims...so maybe I should think about it" ...InshAllah.

BUT...

1. Statistics must be from a CREDIBLE AUTHENTIC source or else they will not be accepted. Thus for every stat you can get, we need a CREDIBLE source.

2. Preferably to be non-biased stsas brought by non-Muslim organisations would be very strong.

I will get the ball rolling InshAllah:

1. MORE than 14,000 white Britons have converted to Islam after becoming disillusioned with western values, according to the first authoritative study of the phenomenon.

SOURCE: TimesOnline

2. MORE than 70 Israeli citizens expected to convert to Islam this year (2006).

SOURCE: y-net News

i think may be it would be pretty difficult to obtain an accurate statistic of revert muslims, because some people become muslims through organisation, friends or through marriage so where statistics are concerned they have gone unaccounted for, it would also be a bit of a difficult task to trace each and every individual that has reverted to Islam.

i would like to add; everyone is born muslim, so when a non-muslim changes his/her religion to Islam they are not actually converting they are reverting back to the religion they were born with. just something i learnt when i asked a group of American reverts when they converted, they looked horrified at me when i used the word convert, 'we were born muslims', they said.
ALHAMDULILLAH, NOW I KNOW!

Salam Daywalker, the mods have already mentioned that. It's my fault I didn't attend to it earlier. They clearly mentioned that it's been stopped before and it'd be wrong to not stop the same thing again so don't worry, they did say the same thing as you. I should have attended to it sooner.

it would never be accurate no matter how hard someone would try because individuals are guided every second of the day...and some do not tell many they have become Muslim from another religion.....can't see it happening no matter how many sources you pull together because not all information will be accurate

(salaam)

The US charge d'affaires in Khartoum, Joseph D Stafford, resigned from his post after he converted to Islam, Sudanese local media sources said.

Stafford told the foreign ministry that his resignation was made for "personal reasons" but Sudanese sources claimed that the envoy was forced to resign after he turned to Islam.

Sources said that Stafford has recorded visits to the headquarters of Ansar al-Sunnah in Sudan and established a close relationship with a number of Sudanese clerics through these visits.

The U.S. State Department has not made any statement to confirm or deny the news on Joseph Stafford.
After his resign, Stafford published an article in the Sudan Tribune and said, "My wife and I have been very fortunate to meet so many wonderful people throughout Sudan who share a strong desire and willingness to improve their communities. We will always remember you and your compelling country, and I know you will continue your hard work for a better life, just as you say daily 'Fi Kulu Harakah Baraka' (Arabic for 'in every move there is a blessing')."

If 'revert'' is the good word to use, why in the Quran or hadiths we can't find that word?

For myself, I use the word ''convert'' because I accepted islam as my religion and I convert my life to an adult muslim life not back to a baby muslim life ... lol

Actually, no one is born Muslim. But everyone is born on the fitrah. The word "revert" just seems like a fad to me, I would stick with the word "convert".

I think 'revert' is more suitable than 'convert' as far as 'fitrat' is concerned, as every creation of Allah swt is born on 'fitrat' to be submissive to His commands, and 'Muslim' stands for one who's submissive to the commands of Allah swt. So, when a non Muslims goes back to his fitrat, he's 'revert' and not 'convert'

Mufti Abdur Rahman ibn Yusuf as well as Shaykh Riyadh ul Haqq have mentioned a little on this topic too, they also say something similar to what brother Arsalan has said. And I agree with that too.

Found the following extract of a transcript on 'revert' and 'convert' in light of a misunderstood Hadith in a lecture by Shaykh Riyadh ul Haq.

Abu Yusuf Riyadh ul Haq - Commonly Misunderstood Verses of the Quran

"Commonly, this hadith is used to prove that all people are born in the state of Islam, as Muslims, and therefore all children remain Muslims... That's incorrect. This hadith doesn't mean that every child is born a Muslim... The correct understanding of this hadith is that every child is born upon nature. And the natural state of every human being is one of clarity, purity; of being in a pristine form; of being unpolluted, unadulterated by external factors. And that natural state is conducive to a person embracing Islam. That natural state is one in which a person is inclined to the beauty and the truth of Islam, but not exactly a Muslim. As that child grows up, the external factors influence that child's nature. If the external influence is corrosive and corruptive, then that purity would be affected, and the person would be disinclined to Islam... and thus they will become followers of other faiths or of no faith."

To summarize: Fitrah means "the pristine, natural state of a human being that is conducive to belief in Islam"; it does not mean "Islam". To revert means to return to a previous state, condition, or practice, and Muslims generally understand it to mean "reverting to Islam", based on the hadith under question. However, since fitrah does not mean Islam, we can hardly call someone who decides to be a Muslim later in life a "revert".

Most of the Sahaba converted to Islam from other faiths (or no faith)... Did they call themselves "reverts"? No... They just called themselves Muslims, plain and simple.
