Mufti Zubiar Bayaat (spent a few ramdhans in SH musjid) on his Direct site has a full article on it here :-

http://www.direct.za.org/Pdfs/Fund_Raising.pdf

Below are some views from other institutions with regards to the issue :-
Mufti Taqi Usmani's websites (though not HIS opinion):-
Mufti Ebrahim Desi from AskIman:-
JamaituI UIama South Africa:-
Darul Loom Deband also hold the same view as the above when they were contacted a month or so ago.

Mufti Yasin shaikh from MuftiSays also concurs with Mufti Zubairs article.
Mufti Adam of Darul Iftaa Leicester also shares the same view as Mufti Zubair Bayaat but he advises a few guidelines if someone does want to do one :-

Walaykum Assalam Warahmatullah

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

Fundraising events and charity dinners are two separate things. If an event is organized consisting of lectures and other programmes, and an entrance fee is fixed with a view to give the proceeds in charity, then I don't see a problem with that. As far as "charity dinners" are concerned, they are better avoided in view of the many reasons explained by my dear friend Mufti Zubayr Bayyat (May Allah increase him), but I personally would not call them haram or impermissible unless there is some other reason of prohibition such as gambling.

As such, it would be better to raise funds in a manner explained by the learned Mufti, but if you did want to go ahead and have a charity fundraising dinner, then you need to be mindful of the following:

1) Make sure not to exclude the poor and needy. It would be better to have a general free for all entrance but encourage those who attend to donate according to their ability in charity.

2) Emphasize to the attendees that the food is not the return for their donations. The return for their donations will be given to them in the hereafter. The meal is only offered as a courtesy for the guests. It would be better if another event was combined, such as an Islamic lecture, along with the dinner.

3) Ensure no one is forced or pressurized into purchasing tickets.

This is not my final verdict hence please also refer the matter to other scholars, such as Mufti Taqi Usmani, for more clarification. It would be wise to proceed with the support of your local scholars and Ulama.

And Allah knows best

Wassalam

(Mufti) Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari

assalamu alaikum

ok, although this post has probably created an awareness regarding whether if one should attend these kind of events, i am extremely sorry i did post it.
because in reality, i knew mufti zubair had said 'no' to such events. however, being in a denial state (subconsciously), i wished to further rectify or maybe seek other ppls opinion.

which is wrong. mufti zubair does great bayaans in ramadhan. and here i am seeking for something against him. astagfirullah. (ive just realised!)

but jazakallah to daywalk3r who gave me those links to read up on.

Molana saleem dhorat from IDAUK also had this mufti zubair article printed in his riyadul jannah magazine in mid 2004.

Our naafs/shaytan always plays these sort of games with us. Alhumdolliah you passed. But some actaully regularly do that i.e once they are told by one scholar you cant do this they go to another and another etc till they get one who says ok. they then make elaan to everyone else that "look we have a fatwa that says its ok" what they dont say is we had to go through 10 other mufti's who all said no before we finally got one who said yes (even with dat scholar we had to twist our word a bit to get the OK).

However as mufti zubairs from SA it is sometimes better to get advice from a local relaible taqwa-bearing scholar (this also helps in our islaa as a relationship between us and our local ulama is created) but we should try sticking with the advice of that particular scholar in future on all other matters also and not ping-pong between other scholars to get the fatwa/answer we want.

jazakallah.
it really has opened my eyes to reality.
you'd just think these kind of organisations are halal as it has no free mixing, music etc. & i cant believe i got blinded by just thinking of it to be an innocent event.

there is more than meets the eye!

Innovative Ways of Fundraising - Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat Saheb DB

Hazrat Ml Salim Dhorat Saheb is discussing the issue of people wanting new ways of collecting funds for the Masjid and other charitable causes. He argues that the Deen that came 1400 years ago will remain until the Day of Qiyamah, and that the traditional way of collection, where people gave solely for the sake of Allah with no hope of return, should be maintained. He believes that the new way of collection, which involves fundraising barbecues and markets, has very little benefit and sacrifices the desire of the Ummah to spend with selflessness.

Hazrat Ml Salim Dhorat Saheb also criticizes the mixing of genders and other impermissible acts that sometimes take place during these new ways of collection. He emphasizes the importance of sticking to the ways of the Sahabah, Muhadithin, Fuqahah, Mufassireen, Zaahids, and pious people of all ages, and the need to avoid fitnahs.

He praises the old style Ulama for holding firmly to the ways of their elders and making efforts against fitnahs, which are now extinct. He argues that big seminars and conferences with modern ways may have glitter but do not last, while the old ways of the Buzrugs continue to have Barkat. He cites the examples of Ml Ilyas Rahmatullah Alaih and Ml Ashraf Ali Thanwi Rahmatullah Alaih, whose works continue to be relevant today because they stuck to the Haq, which always remains above the Baatil.
