qa.sunnipath.com/issue_view.asp?HD=7&ID=2943&CATE=22 - MauIana term explained??
After the committee/s reached their conclusions on the various translations in front of them they decided to go with the AbduIIah Yusuf AIi translation. AbduIIah Yusuf AIi (RA) was considered by some uIama to not have had the necessary iIm required to do tafseer. In my Iaymans view I'm saying that abduIIah yusuf aIi's translation has been a source of guidance and benefit for miIIions and continues to be so but i thought i'II just make a point that some UIama did not agree with some of his translations of certain verses and tafseers of those verses in the footnote of the pages - particularly his views on interest and credit amongst others.
As for the book mentioned by brother Zaid :
Islamic Thought in the Rise and Supremacy of Islamic Technological Culture: Water Resources and Energy - By Waqar Husaini

Al-Fiqh al-Akbar is one of the earliest texts written on central Islamic theology, and one of the surviving works of Abu Hanifa, the Great Imam of jurisprudence and theology. Studied for centuries in the Muslim world, Al-Fiqh al-Akbar offers a layered understanding of divine oneness ( tawhid ), the underpinning of Islamic belief. It helps to refine one's understanding of the Creator, messengers, and divine communication, and enables one, moreover, to gain insight into the realities of this life and the events of the life hereafter.
Al-Fiqh al-Akbar adds nuance to one's understanding of 'aqida and deepens one's appreciation of his or her beliefs, and addresses head-on questions that, if unanswered, could leave invidious doubt and cause communal division: "Where is Allah?" "Does Allah evolve?" "What constitutes true Islamic belief?" "Are prophets capable of sinning?" "Is there creation beyond what we see?" "What comes after death?"
his translation of Al-Fiqh al-Akbar is an unprecedented contribution to a subject in English. A lucid rendering, unhampered by sterile literalism, it draws on a number of commentaries to unlock for the general English-speaking readership a subject that has been largely inaccessible to them, both because of the subject's complexity and the lack of reliable works in English. This definitive edition, combining Maghnisawi's basic commentary with numerous notes carefully selected from 'Ali al-Qari's super-commentary and the entire Kitab al-Wasiyya of Abu Hanifa, is the English reader's essential guide on the intellectual and rewarding journey through Islamic creed.
Prepublication Reviews
"Mufti Abdur-Rahman ibn Yusuf has rendered a valuable service to English speaking Muslims. The depth of his scholarship and the accessibility of his language combine to present the reader with a text that elucidates critical aspects of the orthodox Muslim creed, and sheds light on contentious historical and theological issues."
- Imam Zaid Shakir, New Islamic Directions, USA
"A substantial addition to the dismayingly small number of English translations of works of Islamic theology... It is well suited to provide a solid introduction to later Islamic theology, both Maturidi and Ash'ari, as it has been studied in traditional Sunni circles for centuries."

"A Perfect Companion Book to Prayers for Forgiveness"
The greatest source of blessings and mercy for the Muslim and for all of mankind is Muhammad, the Beloved Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace), sent as a Mercy to the Worlds. Muslims, as the most privileged recipients of this mercy, are required to invoke blessings (salat) upon him, and doing so holds great reward; the Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, "Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah will send ten blessings upon him" (Muslim). Abu Muhammad al-Marjani says, "Your invoking blessings upon him is in reality praying for yourself since the benefits of it are returning to you."
According to the hadith master, Shams al-Din al-Sakhawi, the benefits of sending blessings on Allah's Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) are numerous: Allah, His angels, and His Messenger send mercy upon the one who invokes blessings. Such a person's wrongdoings are expiated, his good deeds increased and purified, and his status elevated. Whoever makes it his complete regimen by day and night, both his worldly and otherworldly matters are taken care of. He is shown his abode in Paradise before his death, his wealth is increased, and more than one hundred needs of his are fulfilled . . .
This short manual consists of fifty invocations of blessings upon the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace), most transmitted from the Messenger s himself. It also includes another ninety-nine invocations, composed by Shaykh Yusuf Motala, which beautifully couple the Names of Allah with attributes of His Beloved Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace). Set out in vowelled Arabic script, with facing English translation, this handy edition also includes transliteration for ease of use.

Madrasah Life

The notion that all modern madrasahs are terrorist factories is a falsehood based on ignorance. This book reveals the daily routine of one well-known madrasah in India and so lifts the veil on that ignorance. It is an account that academics, journalists, pundits and all those concerned with current events and issues should read. It demonstrates that students in a traditional madrasah are given grounding in religious life without any weakening of intellectual breadth and refinement. Above all, the students learn to tolerate and accept different arguments and points of view and to appreciate different human temperament.
Dr Muhammad Akram Al-Nadwi studied and taught Hadith and Fiqh at the prestigious Nadwat al-'Ulama (India). He was also educated at the University of Lucknow and is the author and translator of over 25 books, written in Arabic, on Islamic Sciences and the Arabic Language. After teaching Islamic Sciences at Nadwat al-'Ulama for six years, he joined the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies in 1991 as a Research Fellow. The author is currently revising his recently completed 40-Volume biographical dictionary of the Muhaddithat, the women scholars of Hadith. The Muqaddimah or introduction to this dictionary is also being published separately in English and is scheduled to appear in 2007.
"An intriguing glimpse into madrasah life... is a world where pious contemplation combined with a passion for knowledge and intellectual debate raise students-and readers of this book- to lofty heights."
- Djihan Skinner-Research fellow working in Oxford on 'Cultural History of Islam in India'

Bustan al-Muhadditheen is a well known anthology of Hadith sciences, major books of Hadith, and Muhadditheen. Written in Persian in the early nineteenth century by Shah 'Abd al-'Aziz Dihlawi (1745-1822), it has been extremely popular among scholars of Hadith in the Indian-Subcontinent ever since. It surpasses other books written on the same subject in Arabic, Persian, and other languages.
Shah 'Abd al-'Aziz Muhaddith Dihlawi
Shah Abd al-'Aziz (1745-1822) was born in Delhi. He studied under his father Shah Wali Allah, and with his father's famous students, Shah Muhammad 'Ashiq and Mawlana Khwaja Aminullah. He was trained in fiqh by his father-in-law Mawlana Nurullah. In 1762, Shah 'Abd al'Aziz succeeded his father in the Madrasah Rahimiyah and soon emerged as the leading Muslim scholar of his time. The Fiqh of Da'wah
A Commentary on 40 Hadiths
By Mufti Muhammad Sajaad
Now available on Pre-order
Pre-order price valid until August 30, 2007
There are few who will disagree that the duty of Da'wah, or calling, to Islam has been severely neglected in our times when the need for it is more pronounced than ever. It is either not undertaken altogether, or if it is performed, then it is undertaken without the knowledge of the etiquette, preconditions, and general teachings that the sacred sources of Islam have provided for it. Therefore, the Da'wah is many times bereft of the results and blessings that could be attained.
The Fiqh of Da'wah attempts to explain this duty in a detailed and thorough way. It is based on a comprehensive collection of forty hadiths pertaining to the preaching methods of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) as well as his teachings regarding Da'wah to Allah. The commentary then elaborates upon the hadiths, carefully outlining the virtue, principles, conditions, and etiquette of this lofty duty. Furthermore, the work documents a number of practical examples from the lives of the pious predecessors and from those more recent, showing how they were prepared to make Da'wah even in the most inhospitable of circumstances. This work should prove an indispensable guide for anyone who wishes to seriously understand and practice this forgotten obligation in the twenty-first century.

The Attributes of God ( Daf' Shubah al-Tashbih )
by 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Jawzi, translated by Abdullah bin Hamid 'Ali
Daf' Shubah al-Tashbih is a critique, censure, and refutation of the historical anthropomorphic leanings of some of the Hanbali scholars and learned. At the same time, it is a vindication of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal from the accusations of the anthropomorphism as well as the claim by some Hanbalis, that he adopted anthropomorphic beliefs, similar to theirs. Unmistakably, this work is a polemical commentary on the problematic Qur'anic verses and hadiths that fall under the mutashabih (allegorical and ambiguous) Qur'anic verses and prophetic traditions composed by the author, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Jawzi (d. 597 AH), the author of the well-acclaimed book, Talbis Iblis (The Devils' Deception).
Unlike other books of this genre, this book is significant in that Ibn al-Jawzi offers an incisive critique of scholars of his own school, for which in return, Ibn al-Jawzi was criticised by those Hanbali and Hanbali-leaning proponents.
This book is important for anyone who is constantly indulged in discussions and the study of polemical theology (kalam) and scriptural interpretation (ta'wil), but still have been unable to gain clarity concerning the reality and permissibility of ta'wil of the verses commonly refered to as 'The Attributes Verses' (Ayat Al-Sifat).
The appendix further clarifies the issue of scriptual interpretation, figurative language in both the Qur'an and Sunnah (Majaz), the proper intent behind the statement made by the salaf, & 'bila kayf' (Without 'How' as opposed to 'Without Modality or Description'), and an investigation into the ascription of Kitab al-Ibana to Imam Al-Ash'ari.
Readers who will derive the most benefit from this book are those who have been actively involved in the study of matters of interpretation and polemical theology. It also serves as an indispensable primer into one of the greatest debates that continued throughout much of Islam's medieval period, namely that of understanding the attributes of God.
