Tulayha ibn Khuwaylid (RA)

  1. Kaafir: Tulayha and his brother Ukashah belonged to the Banu Asad tribe and remained non-Muslims while everyone around them accepted Islam.
  2. Incitement against Islam: Tulayha and his brother Ukashah rallied Banu Asad and some other tribes to ambush Madina. Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) dispatched Abu Salama (RA) to quell their plans. Tulayha and his brother Ukashah didn't stop, they allied with Quraysh and decided to mount a second unsuccessful ambush upon Madina during the battle of the Trench
  3. Acceptance of Islam: All tribes around Madina subdued or bound by treaty, Tulayha enters Madina and accepts Islam along with his tribe.
  4. Apostasy and False Prophet hood: Shortly after the passing away of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) claims that he has received revelation and claims Prophet hood. Tulayha then again incites other tribes and tries to ambush Madina which Sayyiduna Abu-Bakr (RA) subdues.
  5. Incitement and Fights against Islam: Tulayha continues his efforts to raid and attack Madina and continues to build power.
  6. Defeat: Sayyiduna Khalid Ibn Walid (RA) defeats him at Buzakha (Tulayha's stronghold) but Tulayha flees to Syria to save his life.
  7. Repentance: After Muslim conquest of Syria, Tulayha gets a serious change of heart and repents to Sayyiduna Umar (RA)
  8. Under Observation: Sayyiduna Umar (RA) knowing his history bars him from any position of power.
  9. Service of Islam: Tulayha (RA) continues to serve as a foot solider and performs brilliantly under Saad Ibn Abi Waqas (RA) at Qadisiyyah and nder Hashim ibn Utbah at Jalula. The bravery, heroics and tactics of Tulayha (RA) lead to the fall of Persian empire and entry of Islam into Persia (Iran) but continues to serve without a position.
  10. Shahada (Martrydom): Fights bravely and becomes Shaheed at the Battle of Nahavand delivering a decisive blow to Sasanian Imperial army which never rises again.

His story is a shining example of repentance and course correction for the Muslim Ummah.
