بہتر تو یہ ہے کہ اسے مسلمان خریدلیں، پھر اسے منہدم کرکے مسجد کی تعمیر کرکے نماز شروع کریں، اور اگر ایسا ممکن نہیں ہے تو بدرجہٴ مجبوری کسی ایسے کمرہ میں جہاں حضرت عیسیٰ علیہ السلام یا حضرت مریم کی تصویر نہ ہو، یا کوئی مجسمہ اور فوٹو نہ ہو تو وہاں نماز پڑھ سکتے ہیں۔ لیکن مسجد کے لیے کوشاں بھی رہیں۔

Praying in a Church in the United States

Question:
In a city in the United States, Muslims have been given permission to offer their prayers in a church because there is no mosque nearby where they can perform their prayers. In this situation, is it permissible for Muslims to pray there or not? Please provide the answer with references so that our students can know the ruling along with its basis.

Answer No. 12948

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Fatwa: 926 = 873/B

The preferable course is that the Muslims purchase the church, then demolish it and build a mosque in its place, and thereafter begin offering prayers there.

If this is not possible, then due to necessity, they may offer prayers in a room where there are no images of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) or Mary (peace be upon her), and no statues or photographs. At the same time, they should continue striving to establish a mosque.

And Allah, the Exalted, knows best.

Bismillah hir-Rahman nir-Rahim !

(Fatwa: 1876/L=560-TL=1432) In itself there is no harm in building mosque adjacent to the Church. However, it is the matter of observation whether it is appropriate or not to build a mosque there and whether building mosque will be harmful there or not. The people of the area should themselves consider about it.

Please confirm that your issue is converting a Temple into a Masjid and not converting a Church into a Masjid?

Write and clearly state that your issue is Temple and not Church.

Actually we are going to build a mosque with name Bilal Mosque in a city of Sweden but the problem is that the place which is given by the authorities is just 20-25 feet away from the Church

Even then, the answer says:

(Fatwa: 1876/L=560-TL=1432) In itself there is no harm in building mosque adjacent to the Church. However, it is the matter of observation whether it is appropriate or not to build a mosque there and whether building mosque will be harmful there or not. The people of the area should themselves consider about it.

In present islamophobia atmosphere, the muftis from darul uloom are discouraging buying chuches. I had heard it in their bayans.

You know that, how many of the 40+ UK churches were in use.
Did that create disharmony.
While the temple being discussed is fueling islamophobia. Conditions have changed, so a new fatwah must be sought quoting the prevailing conditions.

  1. It is not mentioned in the Qur'aan and Sunnah convert a Church into a Mosque
  2. It is not the practice of Sahaba (RA) to convert a Church into a Mosque
  3. It is not permissible to convert a Church into a Mosque
  4. It is not permissible to convert an active Church into a Mosque

khulafa e rashideen and umar bin abdul azeez RA prohibited demolition of places of worship. They were experts in Quraan and Sunnah.
