Salam

Is it true shaykh Abdul qadir jilani رضي الله عنه said and believe that maqam mahmud will be Allah sitting rasoolullah (saw) next to him?

I thought this was just najdi aqida. Recently saw video someone quoting shaykh Abdul qadir jilani رضي الله عنه having this belief. Sounds very off to me.

Walaikum Asalam,

While this particular issue needs to be researched, a few points to be kept in mind:

1- Abdul Qadir Jilani R.A was a Hanbali in Fiqh, and a Hanbali/Athari in Aqidah. Among those who are Hanbali/Atari in Aqidah , some did deviate from the correct Aqidah however Abdul Qadir Jilani R.A was not one of them. He is respected by Asharis, Maturidis, Atharis.

2 - Salafis/Najdis are known for attributing incorrect statements or wrongly interpreting the statements of the Ulama and Sufiya of Ahlus Sunnah, therefore it is very likely that this is what was done in the case you mentioned regarding Hazrat Jilani R.A.

3- It is believed that one book (maybe more than one book) of Hazrat Jilani R.A has been tampered with. Because it does contain opinions that one would not expect of Hazrat Jilani R.A. (so another likelihood is that Hazrat Jilani's statement is actually not his, rather it was added to his book later on)

In short, you can see that there is no reason to be worried about this. Hazrat Jilani R.A is widely respected, and this particular statement attributed to him can possibly be either of scenarios (2) and (3) I mentioned. The fact that he is held in high esteem by nearly all Ulama plus I have never heard anyone say he had incorrect beliefs. (I am pointing this out because some Ulama like Ibn Taymiyyah R.A are also held in high esteem by a large segment of Muslims however his errors are also known and pointed out. Whereas that seems to not be the case for Hazrat Jilani R.A, which alludes to the fact that his beliefs were correct).

Tbh my initial reaction was the guy who made video was misinterpreting the works of shaykh abdul qadir رضي الله عنه. He also tried to refute claim about his books being tampered. He accuses extreme sufis of saying the books are tampered with because it goes again their aqeedah.

It is not about extreme Sufism in this case, Hazrat Jilani's R.A book contains some material which really cannot be attributed to him. Can't remember what exactly. Plus the misinterpretation (by Salafis etc.) possibility is always there.
Most importantly, Ulama from Ahlus Sunnah have not criticized Hazrat Jilani R.A for any matter related to creed to the best of my knowledge, so I don't think there is a reason to worry.
One thing is for sure. Hazrat Jilani's R.A books do contain valuable teachings related to Tawheed which is a wake-up call for Barelvis and other extreme Sufis who claim to be following him. However that is unrelated to the issue we are discussing.
