Maulana Ubaidullah Sindhi RH was in exile for 25-30 years. He traveled to Russia and met communist thinkers and leaders. He returned to Deoband an old man. All the townspeople gathered at the train station when they heard that Maulana had returned. A tall man with white hair and a white beard, wearing no head covering, stepped out of the train. People greeted Maulana and escorted him to the madrasa. A rumor went round town that Maulana had become insane. We were young students then, so we went to hear what Maulana had to say. When we heard his views, we said that if Maulana has not become insane, he is certainly close to it.
At the majlis after Asar prayer, Maulana repeatedly urged us to join the British Armed Forces. He said, "Some of you should study at the madrasa, and the rest of you should join the British Armed Forces." We explained to Maulana that Mufti Kifayatullah Dehlavi forbids this. Maulana Sindhi RH said, "Listen to what Mufti Kifayatullah tells you, and also listen to what I tell you." We told Maulana that Jamiat Ulama also forbids us from joining the British Armed Forces, and Maulana again told us, "Obey the Jamiat and also listen to my advice." He predicted in the 1940s, "I am seeing that in the near future, all of the Islamic nations will come under military rule." Maulana RH said, "Islam will only be allowed to flourish in Islamic naitons to the extent that you are able send religious minded youth into these positions of power."
This advice of Maulana RH was the reason people labeled Maulana insane on his return to Deoband.
