We have many of our Brothers and Sisters who are claiming that to adopt precautions against the spread of infection is in contradiction to Islam.

In this thread Insha'Allah, we will list the actions of Sahabah (RA) when the plague (pandemic) was spread at Amwas, those disagreeing with the Sahaba (RA) must bring forth their evidence of their opposition to the actions of Sahaba (RA).

Where is Amwas?

It is likely that this is the small historical Roman town of "Emmaus Nicopolis" which lies about 23 KM from Jerusalem.

It is likely that this is the location of village of "Imwas" of the Palestinians which was destroyed by Israel and the entire Palestinian population evicted in 1948/1949, the old location of the Palestinian village is here:

What as the Plague of Imwas?

Loading Hadeeth

Imam ibn Hajar Asqalani (RA) lists the symptoms of this disease under the commentary of this Hadeeth as:

  1. Tumours
  2. Blood and Pus flow from various body parts
  3. General diseases which are communicable and cause excessive death can also be termed as "plague"

The key point to take away from this that all of these symptoms are visual i.e. you will not know when to isolate until you start showing symptoms to isolate (the patient) or be isolated.

17 AH: Sayyiduna Umar (RA) tries to rescue Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (RA):

When Sayyiduna Umar (RA) reaches Madina, he consults with the Sahabah (RA) and try to rescue Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (RA) from plague but Sayyiduna Umar (RA) knows that he won't leave the area so he writes to him that "I need to consult with you" so return back to Madina.

Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (RA) read the letter, he laughed as he knew what Sayyiduna Umar (RA) was trying to do. So he wrote back and said I am not going to leave my troops behind and I am satisfied with the decree of my Lord. The letter came back as Sayyiduna Umar (RA) read the letter, he cried and the people wept because people assumed that Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (RA) had passed away but Sayyiduna Umar (RA) said No, but he will soon.

Sayyiduna Abu Musa Al-Ashari (RA) advises Social Distancing:

Muhammad Ibn Ishaq (RA) narrates that we ourselves in the company of Sayyiduna Abu Musa Al-Ashari (RA) when he was living in Kufa. When he sat down around him he said, "O People! do not sit down and huddle here as a man has passed away in this house due to (infectious) disease and so if you leave this city there will be no harm for you. Thus return to the open areas of your (native) cities and there will be no harm for you.

And a person refrains from and takes precautions against matters which he dislikes and people believe that if a person goes out then he can be saved and if he stays he will be saved and if you are free from such superstitions then there is no harm in you venturing out.

17 AH: Sayyiduna Umar (RA) orders Muslims to change locations:

When Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (RA) refused to return to Madina (and abandon) his troops, Sayyiduna Umar (RA) wrote back and ordered the military garrison to be moved from low-lying areas to a higher ground in order to avoid the pandemic.

17 AH: Muslim Army starts to scout for a new location to avoid Infection

Sayyiduna Abu Musa Al-Ashari (RA) narrates that the Ameer Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (RA) called me when he received the letter (and the command) to move from Sayiduna Umar (RA).

Ameer Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (RA) said, "You can see our condition so leave and start looking for a suitable location and I will move behind you with the people."

Sayyiduna Abu Musa Al-Ashari (RA) came home to start preparing for the recce but witnessed that his wife had succumbed to the Plague. He then returned to Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (RA) and informed him that an accident had occurred at home to which he replied, "I think that your wife has passed away?"

Sayyiduna Abu Musa Al-Ashari (RA) replied, "Yes."

Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (RA) becomes Shaheed

Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (RA) then ordered a camel to be brought and when he placed the foot inside the stirrup iron, the attack of plague (worsened) so he said that this plague has affected me. He then took the people from there and moved to Jabiyya where people were relieved from this affliction.

Muhammad Ibn Ishaq (RA) narrates that when the Plague become intense Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (RA) stood among people and he addressed, "O People! This disease is a Mercy for you and it is the Dua of your Prophet (Sallallaho Alaihe Wassallam) for you and it is means of death (of the pious) before you. Abu Ubaidah (RA) makes Dua to Allah Ta'ala to grant him his share from it".

Then the affliction for him became intense and eventually he passed away.

He (RA) had deputed Sayyiduna Muadh Ibn Jabal (RA) upon the people before his death.

Sayyiduna Muadh Ibn Jabal (RA) and his son attain Sahahdah

Sayyiduna Muadh Ibn Jabal (RA) after assuming command stood among people and he addressed, "O People! This disease is a Mercy for you and it is the Dua of your Prophet (Sallallaho Alaihe Wassallam) for you and it is means of death (of the pious) before you. Abu Ubaidah (RA) makes Dua to Allah Ta'ala to grant the family of Muadh a share from it".

His son Abdur-Rahman (RA) became infected and passed away.

Sayyiduna Muadh Ibn Jabal (RA) then made Dua for himself and a tumour appeard on his palm.

He (RA) used to flip his hand look at the tumour and say, "I do not like any benefit in this world in lieu of you". He then passed away and deputed Sayyiduna Amr Ibn Al -Aas (RA)

Sayyiduna Amr Ibn Al-‘Aas (RA) disperses People

Sayyiduna Amr Ibn Al-‘Aas (RA), when he took over as the commander-in-chief of Muslim forces in Syria. He publicly addressed the people, “O People, this (plague) is like wild fire so go to the mountains to safeguard yourself.”

Abu Wail Hazli (RA) said, "You have lied. By Allah I was in the company of Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wassallam) when you were worse then my Donkey"

Sayyiduna Amr Ibn Al-‘Aas (RA) said, "I will not deny it but I will not stay here, either".

He and the people dispersed themselves far and wide and into the mountains until Allah Ta'ala relieved them from the pandemic.

Sayyiduna Umar (RA) approves Dispersion

When these matters reached Sayyiduna Umar (RA) he did not reject the opinion of Sayyiduna Amr Ibn Al-‘Aas (RA)

Challenge:

This thread is now open for anyone to counter the actions of Sahabah (RA) with approval from Sayyiduna Umar (RA), you should refute these:

  1. There is clear Hadeeth that those who are sick have an excuse to not come to the Masjid for congregational Salah.
  2. They took precautions against the Pandemic.
  3. They adopted physical distancing.
  4. They moved twice to get away.
  5. Then they dispersed far and wide and did not intermingle which brought an end to the Pandemic.

I now request Maulana Yasin to do his job and delete nonsensical posts which will be irrelevant.
