We don't know when all civilizations on earth met each other. But every civilization had 7 days in a week. We don't know in history there was a consensus that let us all drop our number of days in a week and resolve to have 7 days a week.

There could have been 8,9 or 10 or any other number in a week in different civilizations. Why only 7? Who guided them?

Can I say, Allah SWT guided the mankind that it is 7 days in a week. So when civilizations met, they had this in common, all had 7 days.

Looks silly!!! but ponder upon this.

There is a mention about the counting system of the people mentioned in Surah Al Kahf (The Cave). When they were discussing how many companions were in the cave, the way the ayah is worded suggests that their counting terminated at seven, and a new count began at eight, according to Tafseer Mazhari.

My answer to this would be that Allah taught Adam (as) the names of everything! This would include days then months in my view. So I will leave that matter there.

However, here is a scholarly repsonse too

Question
If Allah swt made everything in 6 days why do we have 7 days in a week?.

Answer
Praise be to Allah.

Firstly:

We cannot be certain about anything with regard of the division of the week into seven days, or the time when this division began – was it before the creation of the heavens and the earth, or was the creation of the heavens and the earth what led to this division? The reason for that is that we have no clear evidence which states anything certain to that effect. But what is indicated by a study of calendars and the customs and reports of different nations is that the division of the week into seven days is connected to religion and taken from it, and that it has to do with reports and rulings of religion.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in Majmoo’ al-Fataawa (7/95):

Every nation that does not have a Book has no names for days of the week in their languages, rather they have names for the day, the month and the year, because that may be known on tangible and rational ways, so the nations gave them names, because expression follows visualization. But the week was only known by hearing (reports). It was not known that Allaah created the heavens and the earth and everything in between in six days then rose over the Throne except by the words of the Prophets who were enjoined to gather together on one day of the week to worship Allaah and remember the first week in which Allaah began to create the universe. In Arabic and Hebrew and the languages of those who learned from them, there are words for the days of the week, unlike the language of the Turks and others like them; there are no words for the days of the week in their language because they did not know of that so they have no words for it.

Dr. Jawaad ‘Ali says:

The month is divided into four sections, and each section is a week composed of seven days.

The idea of this division is attributed to the Babylonians, but the days of the week and their order in the manner that is known until now is a system that appeared long after them. The week (shavu’ah in Hebrew) is mentioned in the Torah, in the Book of Genesis. Based on both the Jewish Sabbath and the story of creation, the week was organized along the lines that are still prevalent today. End quote.

Al-Mufassal fi Tareekh al-‘Arab qabl al-Islam (16/96).

And Allaah knows best.

I'm a little confused by this response. What has this verse got anything to do with the number of days in a week except for the number 7?
Counting and numbering has been mentioned in multiple areas of the Quran and in particular, the Surah too.

Let me add here. This can prove that Humans started from Adam AS only, genetically many things were transferred to next generations.

And thousands of kilometers apart, civilization also had Friday as an important day.

Humans did start from Adam (as) there is no doubt about that. His prodgeny expanded and moved along the earth. Humans didn't just appear or evolve thousands of kilometers apart. So the knowledge of his creation, being sent to earth and so on would have been passed on.

JazakAllah. I see what you mean now. "Commentators" say that the early Arabs used to count up to seven digits....

However, this incident relates to a time closer to the Prophet (saw) and numbers have been mentioned in the times of the Prophets before him (saw).

For example: Numbers 8, 9 and 10 were used in times before this incident

I am not doubting what the commentators have said about the early Arabs, but I understand now why you made mention of it.

Mashallah, brother AM, I'm very impressed. You are either a hafiz, or someone who is very punctual with their daily recitations. Either way, may Allah Taala increase you in barakah.
