Jazaakumullah for compiling the list

Zoom and Google Hangout are good. I've used both
Another option is bigbluebutton though I could not get the hang of it

الحمد لله Some good suggestions, but as parents we should take some time out and teach them ourselves, maybe we too will learn something.

Do the students need to install Zoom or install an app to access the class?

Not really the right person to ask as I dont really understand technicalities and terms - I get others to install whatever i need and just use it but I'm told there is no need to install any app. It works on browser

Have been usimg it recently for my kids and it is fairly simple to use. All you need to do is download the app and then simply enter a meeting ID, which the teacher has set up. With the exception of the teacher you don't even need to register an account. Once up and running you can swipe the screen right and left. Doing so either shows the teacher on his own, you and the teacher or the teacher and every other member/pupils who are a part of the meeting.

Speaking to my brother, who's head of I.T. for a housing association, said it's probably the best video conferencing software out there. Better video quality, better audio quality and cool features such as zooming into the video of the person talking etc.

Now I havent really used it extensively myself, just set it up for the kids so can't really vouch for it, but from my limited use from it, it seems good.

السلام عليكم

You can also include Cisco Webex

  • It has a free plan.
  • During Covid-19, the free plan has no time limit. Use the code wecare2020.
  • During Covid-19, you can have up to 100 participants for free (usually 50).

والسلام

W-Salam,

The problem is that each Account can only 1 have meeting/session at a given time with Zoom or Cisco Webex. A typical Madrasa runs like this, for example

  1. 17:00 - 17:45: Tajweed for 5-7
  2. 17:00 - 17:45: Tajweed for 7-9
  3. 17:00 - 17:45: Tajweed for 9-11

The issue is to have multiple Accounts because with 1 Account, you will only be able to conduct the first class and not the other two, unless you pay !

And I need to look into paying to see if this can be fixed.

Surely each class would have their own teacher and therefore each teacher would have their own meeting, or am I missing something?

Cannot be run concurrently

So 1 Zoom Account i.e. Muadh Khan can have 1 Class running and not 2 or 3

Is this common, having 3 classes running simultaneously, by the same teacher?

Not by the same teacher but concurrent classes i.e:

  1. Tajweed (Group 1): Needs a Zoom Account
  2. Tajweed (Group 2): Needs a Zoom Account
  3. Tajweed (Group 3): Needs a Zoom Account

Run these concurrently but by 3 teachers.

So Each teacher needs their own zoom Account

I've checked all the options over the past 2 weeks or so and Madaaris do have many options but most are not capable.

After mapping out all the pros and cons, abilities of most parents and teachers I've found the following to be the most suitable:

An average class has 15 students, having all students log on to video streaming is not the best solution due to chaos, tech issues, dropped connections etc. Especially with zoom, it's too confusing to most.

I recommended one Madrasah to split the class into groups of 4 or 5 kids and then allocate a time. 20 minutes is usually sufficient.

Google hangouts seems to be the easiest to use. It supports screen sharing as well. Students should keep cameras off unless absolutely needed.

This can work as:
5pm to 5:15pm - Group 1
5:20pm to 5:45 - Group 2
5:50pm to 6:05 - Group 3
This way the students get better attention and it's easily manageable.

The kids are at home, the teachers are remote and it should be treated as such. You cannot replicate nor enact a classroom environment.. It should be treated as homeschooling and use those methods. Set daily work, upload it daily or at the start of the week on what a student needs to go through with book names or online links, get parents to confirm if the work was done, there are online solutions for this as well.

Have weekly oral tests where you can quiz from the work given in the past week over a conference call. Paper or online quiz wouldn't work because answers are available and parents can give answers to have their kids show up higher.

I wouldn't promote Facebook for many reasons. I understand it's a tool but the negatives far outweighs the positives especially with better options available.

I will send a PM to Wifaqul Ulamaa on this and if found suitable, maybe update the article. Jzk
