I knew this Imam since 2 years and he is an Alim and good khatib mashaAllah. He had lot of free time after salah and I felt he could be made little busy. I offered him to work in a small business unit of ours and he happily agreed as I offered him a reasonable salary as per market trends.
He once told me that how masjid committee members try to suppress them and treat them as they are servants. He said, he sometimes feel like to leave the job of Imam but do it for the sake of Allah and salary he gets there as he doesnt have other sources of income.
Meanwhile I noticed that after starting to work with us, his speeches during khutbah have become more intense and bold. Previously he used to speak in compromising tone without hurting anyone and right now, he is talking without fear of anyone.
I just got to think, should imam's have other jobs so that they can work for Islam fearlessly ?
They should be given reasonable salary and they shouldn't be pressured in any way. (I know it's an ideal situation and can only happen under khilafah).
On the other hand, yes Imams and scholars should do their own business so that they are financially stable and can set an example for demonstrating that how to do business the sunnah way.
It's a fact that under Islamic rule Imams and Ulema were supported by the state and they enjoyed a very respectable and honorable position in the Muslim society. However, under secular rule their status is being degraded. And re establishing the system of khilafah isn't easy and the majority of this ummah isn't ready to sacrifice. Only a few are ready to sacrifice and they are doing so already.

In this country it is reported that most of the imams, the muazzin, the khadims are blind or handicapped/disability. They won't fit into the society so they have taken up these jobs.
In taraweeh they recite one Ayah per rakat...... Arrahmaan... Then go to ruku... allamal Quran... go to ruku.....
When islam becomes burden, they won't abuse islam, they abuse scholars who posses islamic knowledge.
This country carries the legacy of Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mubarak, Imam A'mash, Imam sufiyan thauri RA etc.
This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
