I am old enough to remember back in the 1990s when oil reserves were discovered in the Caspian sea. Afghanistan was in chaos there was law/and disorder. So when the Taliban first emerged they the Americans were happy that a single group would be able to control most of the country and provide peace and security. For an oil pipeline to be established.

But when the Taliban started implementing Sharia the attitude of the Americans changed. In 1998 during negotiations for a Pipeline the Americans insisted the Taliban have an inclusive government ( with pro-western people of Americas choosing within government ) and suspend sharia law and follow western liberal values.

When the Taliban refused these American terms the American diplomat representing Madeleine Albright the American Secretary of State then threatened them with a message from his boss stating " you can either accept a carpet of gold or a carpet of bombs.."

When these negotiations broke down the American and western media collectively went on an anti-Taliban propaganda campaign. Which preceded the 2001 invasion and leaves us were we are today.

LONDON: Afghan soldiers trained by western forces have switched sides to fight for the Taliban, UK military sources revealed on Tuesday.

Officers in the British military, who have analyzed recent images of Taliban fighters including in the final battle for Panjshir, believe the soldiers are showing signs of using techniques employed by NATO countries based on the way they hold their weapons, the Times newspaper reported.

Identifying a “straight finger” trigger position while holding a gun, the military source said: “This is the safety training we have,” adding that if a soldier is seen carrying a gun in that way, they can “know it is our guys,” because traditional Taliban fighters hold their weapons “randomly.”

While there has been no official confirmation of British and American-trained Afghans joining Taliban ranks, experts say it is likely they would face little choice not to — due to the threat of imprisonment or execution.

“Everyone just flips sides,” the source said. “You flip sides so you know you will not get done in.”

“(The Taliban) is not the same hillbillies from the 1990s,” the source added, pointing out that they were “more westernized” than before and “had smartphones.”

The fact that the Taliban “is not killing loads of people” in the Panjshir Valley, the last remaining enclave of resistance in Afghanistan, also supports the belief that western-trained fighters are now among the country’s new rulers.

Another military source, who also saw images from the fighting in Panjshir Valley, commented on the Taliban fighters and how they held their weapons.

“The new Taliban 2.0, as they are being called, is using the finger discipline,” the source said. “An untrained force would normally hold the weapon randomly. But if your hand is behind the pistol grip and your finger is over the trigger guard, then you are not going to have a negligent discharge and no one else is going to fire it either.”

Barbara Kelemen, an intelligence analyst at Dragonfly, a specialist security intelligence firm, told the Times her firm concluded there was “reasonable probability” some Afghan troops would have joined the Taliban.

“Among reasons that would prompt some soldiers to join the Taliban are their previous ties to the group, economic incentives and even personal or family safety if they perceived defeat for government forces was likely,” she said.

However, a defense source disputed the claim and said that any “competent” force would have been trained to handle their weapons in the same way.

“We have no evidence to support reports that western-trained former Afghan Security Forces have joined the Taliban,” the source said.

US military admits it killed 10 civilians and targeted wrong vehicle in Kabul airstrike

(CNN)A United States military investigation into a deadly Kabul drone strike on a vehicle in August has found it killed 10 civilians and the driver and that the vehicle targeted was likely not a threat associated with ISIS-K, announced Gen. Frank McKenzie, the top general of US Central Command, at the Pentagon on Friday.

McKenzie told reporters that the strike was a "mistake" and offered an apology.

"This strike was taken in the earnest belief that it would prevent an imminent threat to our forces and the evacuees at the airport, but it was a mistake and I offer my sincere apology," he said.

Exclusive: In his first interview with western media, Kandahar’s enforcer promises things will be different from the brutal 1990s

Mawlawi Mohammad Shebani is officially in charge of policing morals throughout Kandahar, the Taliban heartland of southern Afghanistan.

He is newly appointed head of the provincial office for the promotion of virtue and prevention of vice, a title which strikes fear into many Afghans old enough to remember its previous incarnation under Taliban rule in the 1990s.

Its officers served as the brutal enforcers of the group’s extreme interpretation of Islam, whipping men into mosques to pray, policing beard length, smashing radios and televisions and attacking or detaining women who tried to work, went out without a male guardian or showed their faces in public.

Now it is back, and in the first western media interview with an official from the organisation, Shebani detailed its structure and how it will police Afghan behaviour, and revealed the pocket handbook meant to guide the work of his men.

He described a network fully integrated into the Taliban police force, with ties to mosques and madrassas, and formal rules of operation, which have been made public.

“The difference is we didn’t have a specific book of principles. There was just the mujahideen without a written code,” he said of the 1990s.

He promised his men would focus on persuasion not violence. But the guidelines he shared with the Observer, drawn up into a dense booklet about the size of a smartphone, approved the use of force against the most recalcitrant offenders.

It describes a multistep process of handling offenders, first educating them, then pressuring them to change their behaviour. If they are still recalcitrant, force may be an option, according to the booklet, published last year when the Taliban were building up the network inside their insurgency, and in the pockets of rural Afghanistan they controlled at the time.

“Fourth step, if still the person continues (the offending behaviour), and this can cause a lot of problems, then you can stop him with your hands,” the guidelines said.

It also included rules redolent of the harshest aspects of Taliban rule in the 1990s, including a requirement that women leave the home only if they are accompanied by a male guardian, compulsory prayer and stipulations on beard length for men.

Shebani sat down for the interview before his new boss, cleric and now minister Mohamad Khalid, took over the Kabul building that had housed the ministry of women’s affairs. He is operating from the ministry of Haj and religious affairs complex, near Kandahar airport.

“Some people think we are extremist, but we are not like that. Islam is a religion of moderation, not too much and not too little, everything just right,” he said. “Media channels are publishing negative things about us, please spread the reality to the world.”

The leadership is apparently aware of how the organisation is perceived internationally; when they handed out an English language list of new cabinet appointments earlier this month, the vice and virtue ministry was the only one not translated.

UN says Taliban asked to address GA meeting, names UN ambassador

The United Nations says the Taliban, Afghanistan's new rulers since last month, have challenged the credentials of Afghanistan’s former U.N. ambassador and are asking to speak at the U.N. General Assembly’s high-level meeting of world leaders that began Tuesday.

The question now facing U.N. officials comes about a month after the Taliban swept to power as the U.S. prepared to withdraw from Afghanistan at the end of August. The Taliban stunned the world by taking territory with surprising speed and little resistance from the U.S.-trained Afghan military. The western-backed government collapsed.

U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Secretary-General Antonio Guterres received a communication on Sept. 15 from the currently accredited Afghan Ambassador, Ghulam Isaczai, with the list of Afghanistan’s delegation for the assembly’s 76th annual session.

Five days later, Guterres received another communication with the letterhead “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” signed by “Ameer Khan Muttaqi” as “Minister of Foreign Affairs,” requesting to participate in the U.N. gathering of world leaders.

Muttaqi said in the letter that former Afghan president Ashraf Ghani was “ousted” as of Aug. 15 and that countries across the world “no longer recognize him as president,” and therefore Isaczai no longer represents Afghanistan, Dujarric said.

In cases of disputes over seats at the United Nations, the General Assembly’s nine-member Credentials Committee must meet to make a decision. Both letters have been sent to the committee, Dujarric said.

“No meeting of the credentials committee has been scheduled so far,” U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said.

Afghanistan is scheduled to give the last speech on the final day of the high-level meeting on Sept. 27.

Problem with this is its become apparent the leadership is saying one thing and the enforcers are doing something else. Much of the street enforcers are uneducated with limited knowledge of social interactions and the world.

Afghanistan’s deadliest earthquake in 20 years kills 1,000 and injures 1,500 people in the provinces of Paktika and Khost.

The situation is horrific. This is the last thing Afghanistan needed. They were already facing one of worst humanitarian crises in modern history and now this.

The problem is a lot of these areas and Afghanistan in general lies on a faultline. Most of the areas hit by the quake are mountainous regions and people live on the sides of the mountains or in the valleys which makes them especially vulnerable to landslides that come as a result of earthquakes.
