I’m not sure if racism is the right word here, but whatever it’s called has always existed. I’m from a very mixed background so never really fit into any specific category but was always bemused when asked which village or district in India I was from. Sadly I found racism worst within the Muslim community than the non Muslim. It’s not enough to be just a practising Muslim, you will be labelled as Sufi, tabliqi, hanafi, brelwi, etc etc the list is endless. Depending on whatever category you fall under that’s how your treated.

Allah سبحانه وتعالى says
Show mercy to mankind

Not show mercy to just Muslims.

If your white it’s a problem, if your black it’s a problem, not being the right type of culture or Muslim is a problem. The beauty of our deen is that we can communicate directly to our creator we don’t need a go between like in Hinduism. Being acceptable in the eyes of people is irrelevant what matters is our relationship with Allah.

In reality no one is superior to another in gender, race, status, culture etc. We are all equal in the eyes of Allah.

Freeing yourself from being a part of anything specific gives you the freedom to make choices where otherwise you would be restricted. Alhamdulillah

Sad story!

Using labels for racism purposes is one thing and using labels for declaring association with certain sets of beliefs is another thing.

If labels are that bad then why use the label Hanafi? Why not just use simple "Muslim". And I would go one step further "What's the need of using even that label"? Why not just use simple "Human"? (Pardon me for saying that and I hope members here will understand my point without issuing fatwa against me) This is a very important question.

Once a hadith rejector was debating us and asking why do we call ourselves Muslim? He said there are Christian Muslims, Jew Muslims and Muslim Muslims. Hence he would call himself submitter.

So don't worry such nutty views also exist in this world.

I am not saying that we should not use the label given by Allah to us. However, I am making another point and I hope you are understanding what I am trying to say.

The idea is to be specific. We are Human, Muslim, Hanafi, Sunni and so on. It doesn't take any of that away from us, instead it is specific.

So my question to you is: "Is it January, Friday or the 18th"?

And I say I am Muslim, Sunni, Hanafi and Deobandi.

If you are ok with all other labels then what's the problem with the last one?

These labels are a compulsion of history and will stay, like it or not :)

Jews are called ‘Jews’ even in Quran and Nasara are called ‘Nasara’.There is no escape from names/identity and there is no escape from terminologies.

Deoband is indeed a geographical location, the Madrsa of deoband does not exist in ‘Lahoot-La makan’ but on this planet earth in a city/village called deoband. It’s Ideology resides in the minds of those scholars who tend to agree with that school of thought.

The school of thought existed even before deoband Madrassah. All the good people had the same aqeeda even before it was named Deobandi school of thought. It comprised of Tauheed e khalis, ittiba e Sunna, taqleed, tasawwuf and purity of aqeeda. In the context of subcontinent they followed Hanafi Fiqha and defended it but considered all the four Fiqhi schools correct. Most probably it turned into a ‘group like structure’ when challenged by others regarding some of their aqaed, hence the existence of ‘Barelvi’ made them ‘Deobandi’ just like the existence of ‘night’ differentiates ‘day’...

Otherwise it is the same good old Ahle sunnat wal jamaat, nothing new...

You tell me brother, what was all the fuss about? :)

For me it was a matter of making a point that should be understood from the elders point of view.

I totally agree and you elaborated my "it" statement in detail very well. This is what I believe and this is what I mean when I say Deoband. Oh my Allah! Online communication is very very difficult and sometimes people become as strange as Sherlock Holmes' adventures.

People take simple and clear to understand statements out of context and then create another "Alif Laila Story" out of it. Sometimes, it seems, there are too many philosophers in this forum.

Jazak Allah for your detailed explanation.

Yes but as I asked, is it January, Friday or the 18th?

So if you are Deobandi, which type?

Or shall we call it a day and stick to the topic :)
