Influential religious scholar and former senator Maulana Samiul Haq has been assassinated at his residence in Rawalpindi, his son has confirmed.

Maulana Hamidul Haq said his father was stabbed to death while he was resting in his room.

"His driver Haqqani had gone out. On his return, he saw that Maulana Sami was lying in his bed in a pool of blood. He was no longer alive," Hamid said while talking to Geo News.

The news of his death comes at a sensitive time, with religio-political parties out on the streets protesting the Supreme Court's acquittal of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman, in a blasphemy case.

According to Hamid, Maulana Sami was unable to take part in the protest that was underway against Bibi's acquittal due to road blockades and had returned home.

"He was stabbed multiple times," he said. Maulana Sami's driver/gunman had left the room for approximately 15 minutes when he was stabbed.

Sami's body is being shifted to District Headquarters Hospital, TV reports said.

Maulana Sami, said to be around 83 years old, was the head of the Darul Uloom Haqqania seminary in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Akora Khattak.

He was member of the Senate of Pakistan from 1985 to 1991 and again from 1991 to 1997.

He had been aligned with the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf for the July 25, 2018 election.

Prime Minister Imran Khan's party had sought to work closely with him to implement various reforms and mainstream madrassah education.

Last month, a high-level delegation from Afghanistan had called on Maulana Sami, known as the "Father of the Taliban", at Darul Uloom Haqqania and urged him to play a role in resolving the Afghan issue.

The delegation had appealed to the JUI-S chief to play the role of a mediator between different groups of Taliban as they considered him [Maulana Sami] their elder. The delegation members assured him that they would accept his decision for reconciliation in Afghanistan.

Maulana Sami had told them that the Afghan issue was very complicated and its resolution was not an easy task for him. However, he had said he wished to see a logical end to the Afghan issue and an end to bloodshed in the country.

Just recently Maulana had called for punishing the CJP Saqib Nisar according to law for his blasphemous decision regarding Aasia. He also said that he had warned Imran Khan that his government would meet the same fate for reversing Aasia's sentence which Nawaz Sharif's government had met after hastening Mumtaz Qadri's death sentence to please foreign powers.

The timing of his assassination should not be lost on anyone.

I think it's time Pakistan went to civil war and toppled the corrupt and decadent politicians and military who are serving masters other than Allah and Prophet SAW.

قاتل ذلیل تو آخرت میں ذلیل ہوںگے ہی لیکن اللہ تعالی نے اس عمر میں ان کی قسمت میں شہادت لکھی تھی۔

You my want to wait for a few days to find out what was the real reason behind the martyardem of Moulana ra,may be it was related to some issue not connected to the recent turmoil in Pakistan,who knows ?

Anyways, don't worry, the Pakistanis of today are in no state to even harbor thoughts of standing up for themselves, so there will be no righteous bloodshed. For now.

Obviously I can't read your mind so I will take the word 'civil war' by its meaning,one should be careful in choosing the words while expressing himself.

Powerful west,more dependence on Kuffar and more disunity amongst Muslims.We ended up being more at loss.We lost most of the very limited capabilities we had,our holy rebel warriors killed more innocent Muslims than they killed kafirs,our countries ended up being banana states,the infighting thus started continues till today and the ultimate result is that we are left without even the slightest potential to resist,even if we want to...

Every movement for ‘change’ is supposed to be for the good,not for the bad..

Why try to tread the path which has proved itself to be destructive for the Ummah ?
