In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh

Texas is the second largest state in America and Houston is the fourth largest city. On Friday, the 26th of August 2017 around 10 PM, Harvey made landfall as a category 4 hurricane off the coast of mainland Texas near Corpus Christi. Within hours, the hurricane was downgraded to category 2 and then further downgraded to category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph (150 kph).

The greatest danger of Harvey was associated rainfall and flooding. In Southeast Houston, as of 30th of August, a weather station has registered more than 51 inches of rain from Tropical Storm Harvey. This is the greatest amount of rain recorded from a single tropical storm or hurricane in the continental United States. It is more than 4 feet of rain. This is almost the same amount of rainfall Houston gets in a year.

I was reading the comments under the news story concerning the pastor who did not open his church to hurricane victims. Many non Muslims were saying don't worry the mosques are open, and that Muslims are nice people. Even though we should not be opening our masjids to help those in need just to give Islam a good name and to be portrayed in a good light in the media, it definitely did give people a good impression of Islam and Muslims.

Hurricane Harvey: Texas' biggest church 'closes doors' during Hurricane Harvey but Mosques still open

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/hurricane-harve...

A megachurch in Houston closed its doors in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, which has caused catastrophic flooding and forced thousands to leave their homes.

An announcement on Facebook said Pastor Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church had shut due to the storm and asked people to pray for those affected.

“Lakewood Church is inaccessible due to severe flooding! We want to help make sure you are safe,” the post read.
