as you may be aware i am currently listening to shaykh yasir qadhi (ha) seerah as well as recently watched the omar series ( i wont recommend to know who already heard/read his biography or are strictly against depictions of sahaba) and find myself between two emotions which are causing me pain. half of me is filled with pride and happiness knowing what the sahaba and early muslims acheived and yet i feel bitterness and grieve seeing our situation today and that i myself cant do anything either to help or change. how do i deal with this feeling without feeling despair and depressed. few thousand poor ill equipped uncultured men conqured and brought light and justice to the world yet 1.7 billion cant even defend our masaajid, honour our messenger and our womenfolk. i consider myself guilty of this too. iv even stopped watching the news as it just depresses me and i thought listening to seerah and seeing and reading stories of the salaf would cheer me up but instead it makes me feel even more depressed as i end up comparing our times to theirs.
what can i do to get rid of this feeling
A believer lives between hope and fear.
That is his rightful place.
His palace.
(For the record he is inclusive of both she and he.)
A believer is ever hopeful.
He is also afraid.
His hope is in the boundless Mercy of Allah swt.
His fear is because of his own failings.
A believer never becomes assured of salvation - that will will be excessive hope.
That is not a believer's quarter.
A believer may fall into despair.
That is merely his sickness.
It is not his quarter.
And then Allah swt said, "Does it mean that We shall not test you just because you say you believe?"
Allah swt further said that he tested earlier people to such limits that eev the Prophet's among them cried, "Where is Allah's help?"
And Allah's help is near.
That Allah's help is near should be more of an assurance to us then even the laws of science, including Physics.
So let us not despait for we shall be the winners, if we are true believers.
This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
