Two teachers at an Islamic school have been jailed for beating a 10-year-old boy so badly that he started losing his hair through stress.
Mohammed Siddique, 60, and his 24-year-old son Mohammed Waqar were sentenced to a year in prison after pleading guilty to wilful cruelty during lessons at Sparkbrook Islamic Centre in Birmingham.
The boy was beaten on four separate occasions with a plastic stick and also given back-handed slaps by each of the two men for "talking in the classroom" or failing to properly recite the Koran.
Photographs showed "extensive" bruising to the back of the boy's legs.
Judge Mark Wall QC said he had considered suspending the men initially but decided "it would not be right to do so", and a custodial sentence would show that such "brutality" could not be tolerated.
He said at Birmingham Crown Court: "This is not a case where you each overreacted only once to provocation, neither is it a case in which you misunderstood what constitutes proper punishment and therefore requires some guidance from probation services as to where that boundary lies.
"Added to that, there must be no mistake about the message taken from this case.
"Acts of brutality of this sort which you each indulged in, with a stick, will not be tolerated."
The violence was reported by the boy to a mentor at the school.
Surprised corporal punishment is still being used in this day and age, and also surprised this incident took place at a Jamaat e Islami centre, considering they are always preaching about education reform, modern education standards and modes of behaviour for teachers.
