Salaamualaikom,

I've seen many 'Ulama carrying pens on their front shirt pocket. Can anyone tell me the virtues of doing that? I remember reading somewhere that students of deen should carry a pen and notebook anywhere they go.

JazakAllah khair

When I read things like this, I instantly think of Maulana Saleem Nawab of Upton Lane. He will sit with a pen and scrap paper/notepad or a used envelope even if it's a Bayan by a 12 year old in Tableegh ready to take notes.

I've never come across any hard virtues for doing this but surely zeal of knowledge is a virtue in itself and since smartphones and Google has killed the essence of knowledge (Ilm) and replaced it with "information" where many cannot differentiate I think the virtues for such actions are many folds nowadays.

And yes, in Darul Uloom I once heard a guest scholar say to one student when asked for pen (who didn't have one) that a student of knowledge without a pen is like a soldier without a gun

Alhamdulilah! I looked up Maulana Saleem Nawab's (db) name on youtube and found him to be the same shaykh I've been trying to find since I first heard him years ago. JazakAllah Khair

isn't the vastcoot (waistcoat) with golden pen in the front pocket worn out of fashion? nowadays, people use their smartphones when they want to jot something down. tabligis maybe the only exception with their notepads. :)

The satisfaction that a simple notepad and pen provide, no iphone, android phone or any other phone can provide.

I presume it requires focus and concentration, to jot something down with the pen and the mind of the individual who is jotting things down is focused on what is being said, and therefore is able to internalise, and absorb the beneficial knowledge his mind, his eyes and ears are all free from distractions, and he is also able to exercise the cells in the mind and at the same time, improve his reading and writing skills and he acquires all these benefits in one go.

Whilst the one who is using modern technology is probably sitting their daydreaming about what they are gonna have for dinner. Even when they get around to listening to the recording later on, they are day dreaming about something else. So them Tablighis probably have an advantage over others.
