Maulana Mohammad Shafi Usmani rah. the founder of Darul Uloom Karachi, studied at Darul Uloom Deoband. Amongst his ustaads, most of his time was spent with the illustrious Hazrat Miya Asghar Hussain rah. Maulana Shafi sahab once narrated an incident of his ustaad which highlights the akhlaq of the elders of Deoband.

Maulana mentions that whenever they went through a particular lane, there was a house which when they crossed, Hazrat would remove his shoes and carry them in his hands and after some distance he would wear them again.

Whenever maulana asked him the reason for it he would tell him to leave the topic. One day, hazrat himself called maulana Shafi Usmani sahab and said that the house we cross on that particular lane is the house of a prostitute.

When she was young and beautiful, people used to flock that place and there was always someone coming and going there. Over a period of time as she grew old the visitors to her place also lessened to the extent that now no one goes there. But out of hope, this woman still beautifies herself and waits for her customers.

A thought comes to my mind that when crossing her house, if she hears the sound of my shoes than her hopes will be raised and she will eagerly await her customer. But than when she finds no one her hopes will be dashed and her heart will be broken.
Miya Shafi , what right do we have to break the heart of even a prostitute ?How can I hurt even her feelings? That’s why I always remove my shoes when I cross that house so that no sound of my footsteps be heard.

Mufti Mohammad Shafi sahab rah. once commented that Hazrat Maulana Asghar Hussain sahab rah. was a teacher of the highest calibre. His akhlaaq was moulded in the sunnah of nabi alayhi salam and completely in tune with those of sahaba kiraam radhiallahu anhum.

His house was made of mud and every year during the rainy season, it became necessary to re-plaster it. Much time and effort went in repairing it. Once Maulana Shafi sahab rah. asked him to build a brick house and save himself the inconvenience of annually repairing his mud-house.

The reply he gave indicates the level of sympathy these pious elders had for the people and their akhlaaq that shone through their actions. Hazrat said: “All my neighbours are very poor and have mud-houses. If I have to build a brick house, it may distress them because they are not affluent enough to be able to build brick houses. How can i than bring myself to have a brick house built ?

Hazrat Shaikhul Hadith Maulana Zakariya rah. once mentioned, " I have never seen anyone so obedient to the command of his elders as i have seen Hazrat Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani rah.

Shaikhul Hind Maulana Mahmood Hasan rah was very old and sick when he was imprisoned in malta. Hazrat Hussain Ahmad Madani rah had himself imprisoned for the service of his shaikh. In prison, Hazrat shaikhul Hind rah.was unable to use cold water for wudhu being sick and old. Hazrat Madani rah. would fill a pot of water and hold it to his stomach the entire night to warm it and then would present it at the time of tahajjud for hazrat to use as there was no hot water available in prison.

On his return from prison, Hazrat Shaikhul Hind rah. once broke down in tears and said to his wife " I guarantee you that if we had our own son he would not have served me as Maulana Hussain Ahmad has done."
