Let us thank brother Muadh Khan for this interview.

Let us make this interview a milestone for our future actions in those problems that were focussed upon in it.

Basically my interest is in applied Islam.
Islam as applied to worldly issues.
Issues beyond Faith, Prayers, Zakat, Fasting and Haj.
Issues beyong Ihsan.
When I say issues beyond Ibadah and Ihsan I do not mean that these issues are superior to Ibadah.
These are not.
Yet these issues are very important in the life of believers.

Issues related to security of Muslims the world over.
This point invariably will bring in the matters related to G!h@d in focus.
I shall give them a pass because of obvious reasons.

Then there are the issues related to earning one's livelihood, business, commerce, economy, trade, industry, finance.
Many people speak about these but we Muslims are pathetically ill-equipped to address these very crucial issues. This is really a shame for our beloved Prophet (SAW), to begin with, was a trader. This must have been our strong point through out history but look at our condition in this sector today. We are most miserable in these matters.

Then there are issues of science, technology and their applications and implications.
We do not figure at all in these sectors.

Then coming to social, cultural and political matters.
Our youth is mesmerized by the west and we have, honestly, nothing to offer them to get them back.

Our Ulama have taken the task of learning and teaching the Noble Qur'an and Hadith upon themselves and they have done a wonderful job. For this service itself they deserve our utmost respect. This must be kept in mind at all times. A religious scholar is different from a convent school teacher. An Alim is a representative of beloved Prophet (SAW) and we must remember the admonitions of Surah Hujurat when we deal with our Ulama.

But life does not stop at Faith-Prayers-Fasting-Zakat-Haj-Ihsan, as said earlier.
Thus the problem of conducting our worldly matters according to the teachings of Islam falls upon us.
By us I mean the Muslim with modern education as different from theological education of the Dar-ul-Ulooms.

This task is not easy one.
We need utmost familiarity with theology apart from expertize in our own fields.

What approach should we adopt to these problems? My guess is as good as yours. Let us ponder over it. Talk about it. Let us discuss suggestions. Let us talk to Ulama. Let us request them. Let us devise ways to tackle them.

Of course personally I am completely immersed in these thoughts.

Agreed. But today we see some Deobandi's leaning towards the Barelwi ideology, not in full, but discretely. And on the other hand, we have some who are leaning towards the Salafi. And there is a clear gap in the age difference too. The elders towards Barelwi and the youngsters towards Salafi.

I can see where and why, but I think it is because of these issues that Deoband is being given the wrong overall picture. They are being tainted with these ideas as their own and it doesn't look like its getting better. We have more youngsters following or going towards the Salafi because of the elders who have been picking up Barelwi ideas.

Alhumdulillah, we have some very good young Ulama who are going back to the classical books and avoiding doing the wrongs their teachers are doing. However, it will take time for the new generation to get back on track. (Of course, this is only an observation from the West, the state of the Indian subcontinent is something you would be more familiar with)

I haven't said ALL Deobandi Ulama, just a handful (to keep it clear :))
Just petty little issues like some methods of dhikr (as mentioned by Mufti Saheb), stuff done at graveyards etc etc. Not sticking to the actual opinions of the senior Ulama and suggesting they know/feel better.

(Don't get me wrong on the dhikr issues, I have a whole thread for of Pro's of it and evidence etc.)

can someone please explain to me why it is not enough just to follow the hanafi madhab (or whichever madhab you happen to follow)? what is the need to follow deoband if we already follow a madhab?

Good question, but who do we then go back to? For now we have two choices, Barelwi or Deobandi.

Mufti saheb said in his lecture that if you are a Hanafi, you are practically a Deobandi. But it's not the same if you are a Barelwi :)

Maaf, bhai, I pressed "dislike" on your comment. For brevity's sake only, I didn't feel like writing a proper reply. I agree with what you said, I just think you're making it out to be a bigger problem than it is. And so what if scholars from India and from the West are not totally alike? the places they live in are totally different. Ulama from back home aren't perfect, chances are if all the masajid in one's city were run by Ulama from India, non-Desis, youth and women would suffer a lot.

Forgive me, bro True Life, please.

Hazrat, it's alright... although I still believe you missed my point. I was not trying to prove one sort of elders to be better than the other & Mufti Taqi sahab (ha) does not really count as scholar from West, does he? Anyways, I did not dislike your post by the way.

Who would you take the Hanafi fiqh from if it wasn't from Deobandi Ulama? Would you use Arabian Scholars?

Would you be picking up old classical Arabic books and try to dissect the Masail from there?

What Mufti Saheb was trying to say is that their ways are the same as the rest of the correct followers of Hanafi fiqh. The difference is location and mother tongue.

this is what i thought you meant but i wanted to make sure. this point also crossed my mind too. but even many deobandi scholars are no longer reliable to accurately transmit the correct hanafi fiqh to us. examples that come to mind are the moon issue, christmas cards, mlm marketing scams, interest based banking, etc.

Mufti Saheb (HA): By the way, Maulana Obaidullah Sindhi (RA) is very popular in your Pakistan and there is a movement inspired by him but in our India people hardly know him. (Laughing) you Pakistanees like him a lot.

Which movement?
