Asslamo Allaikum,

I am not happy with the post edit policy of MS. Sometimes a person says things which on later reflection doesn't seem right, something the original direction of discussion changes. Sometimes the tone or content may appear to cause Fitnah.

So a person should be allowed to change their mind and the Moderators shouldn't be in a position to disapprove an edit when the person who uttered those words has decided to retract or change it.

If those words were an error then Mods are propagating the error of a Muslim and complicit in propagating a Fitnah. Sorry for bringing SF into it but they edit posts, close them prematurely which gives the impression that the user has a certain position when they don’t.

I respectfully disagree with this policy and ask for it to be reconsidered.

Jazakallahu Khayran

Most edits are approved, especially when it is safer and if it is the best thing to do considering the content.

Some edits in the middle of the thread changes the responses to other posts and makes it look like they are talking nonsense or "what are they on about" feeling.

Small edits are fine and most of the time don't need authorizing.

Larger edits require both posts to be read rigorously, which means it can be time consuming and many of the times is not necessary.

Many times the original post speaks volumes and has so much truth in it, but then gets watered down, then one would think "what was the point of replying"

Khair, inshaAllah Admin can give us a better insight and guidelines for us to look into inshaAllah.

We submit to the Ameer and Mushwara so if that's what's decided in the Shura then we submit and we obey.  Our job is to bring an issue to your attention and Shura and Ameer Saheb decide and we accept the outcome.

Jazakallahu Khayran.

Assalamu Alaykum,

Abu Mohammed has covered it pretty much.

How the post edit policy came about. Initially, all posts were allowed to be edited and deleted. Deleting made it look like the person replying was talking to themselves so that was removed. However, editing caused the same issue when hundreds of posts were found to have just "..." in it when a member gets annoyed etc. So the following was deemed most appropriate:

1. Allow editing
2. Small edits go through immediately as it's usually spelling corrections
3. Larger edits go through if the edited version has more than the original (I'm sure if I implemented this though, I will check inshaAllah)
4. Edits which decreases from the original will go to pending.

Reasons include:
1. Others may have replied in which case it's too late to retract. Similar when words are spoken, it's done. Treat your posts like speech, you can't edit something you have just spoken but you can correct it after so corrections can be made as replies if needed.
2. Sometimes the original post is perfect and an edit was made under pressure from other members (this has happened)

There's more reasons which are all similarly related to the above.

What I can maybe do is display the original with the edited version under it as a button (to expand). That way there's no delay in getting the edited message across. Once approved, the original will disappear forever.

Wassalam

Maulana,

People make mistakes and will continue to do.

Its Shura decision but ultimately what you are saying is that your override our own self inspection (and corrections) and will have your sins/mistakes displayed forever.

If a person commits an error and they then realise than that should be allowed to edit/apologise/seek forgiveness (correct/amend as necessary).

This is the biggest complaint about SF on the Internet that Moderators/Administrative use their subject judgment on issues. MS is declining the right of people to edit their own words. Majority of islamic forums don't follow this policy at all becaus it creates bad blood between people.

I had an issue with Aapa UmHasan (Alimah) and I was wrong. I picked up the phone, called her husband explained the situation and apologised.  My error is still there for the whole world to see in pure daylight while I was never given a chance to explain the corrective action; so for the rest of the world it appears that I disrespected an Alimah and their judgement is clouded forever., because they can’t see the corrective action.

Not that I care but just a practical example of the impact of Moderators on people.

Whatever you decide but just trying to make the issue as clear as possible.

Certain posts are given the green light as was yesterday, a major bulk was removed, but authorized as we could see the reason behind it.

Although a good idea, in many cases this would defeat the object.

We as Muslims should always fear the consequences of our action. THINK first, then post.

I've made some silly mistakes that I regretted but clarified my position in later posts and accepted my errors. If I wished, I could abuse my powers and even edit the other posts to suite mine, but I didn't. I went along and accepted my mistake/posts and continued happily ever after.

There was once a post that mentioned "Keyboard Mufti's" that hit me hard and it made so much sense even though it wasn't meant for me.

Please can you modify this option? Please let us edit our posts and delete them ourselves, at times we need to do so, and at times we make errors, and at times mistakes in writing or understanding the things..
In this way the authorizers will get some peace of mind..
