I had to ask regarding Mufti abdullah nana, asked from numerous sources. No reply or they didnt know him. (Then according to my research he is authentic)

what does authentic mean? are you talking about zaahiri or baatini?

someone can be a darse nizami graduate, have khilafat from a big deobandi shaykh, not go on camera and whatnot, have fist length beard and pagri....and still be an evil individual.

another person can have well-researched opinions that differ from most Ulama and still be a very pious individual.

my reply on the previous page

Quote:
To be honest in this day and age, the safest bet is when following ulema is to see whether they stick to the consensus of the ulema or not and the closest to the Quran and Sunnah.

Majority of opinion is usually the safest way to go. Be wary of ulema especially when they have lone opinions or logic that other ulema do not agree with or just merely sound good but have no basis in reality of the Shariah.

If you have doubts about someone then its best to stay away.

Allah knows best

This is what I go by personally in a nutshell.

so in short, to know some authentic scholars you need to know some authentic scholars whom you can ask..

السلام عليكم

بسم الله الرحمن اللرحيم

Criteria as checked and approved by Hazrat Mufti Ebrahim Desai sahab (db) of Askimam.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

a) It is important for every Muslim to ensure his source of Deenī knowledge is sound and reliable. The great Imām from the Tābi‘īn, Muhammad ibn Sīrīn (d. 110 H) – may Allah Ta‘ālā have mercy on him – said:

إن هذا العلم دين فانظروا عمن تأخذون دينكم

“Verily, this knowledge is religion, so be cautious of whom you take your religion from.” (Sahīh Muslim) [1]

A similar statement was narrated from the Sahābī, Abū Hurayrah (radiyAllāhu ‘anhu), and the Tābi‘ī, Qatādah (rahimahullāh). [2]

In general, the person from whom you take your religious knowledge should be someone who adheres to the Sunnah of Nabī (sallAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) in creed and conduct, and to the path of the noble Sahābah (ridwānullāhi ta‘ālā ‘alayhim ajma‘īn). Nabī (sallAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) defined the group that is on haqq (truth) from his ummah as those that hold fast to “what I and my companions are upon.” [3]

The name with which this methodology has become known is: “Ahlus Sunnah wa l-Jamā‘ah” – adherents of the Sunnah and the Group, meaning, the Sahābah.

The great Faqīh from the Tābi‘īn, Ibrāhīm al-Nakha‘ī (d. 96 H), said, in describing the practice of the scholars of his time:

كانوا إذا أتوا الرجل ليأخذوا عنه نظروا إلى سمته وإلى صلاته وإلى حاله ثم يأخذون عنه

“When they would come to a man to take (religious knowledge) from him, they analysed his conduct, his Salāh and his state, and then [if these were to standard], they took from him.” [4]

Furthermore, the person from whom you take religious knowledge should be of sound character and a person of piety. The great hadith scholar, Yahyā ibn Ma‘īn (d. 233 H), said:

آلة الحديث الصدق والشهرة والطلب وترك البدع واجتناب الكبائر

“The apparatus of hadith (and religious knowledge) is integrity, recognition (amongst the scholars), pursuit (of Deenī knowledge), abandonment of bid‘ahs and avoidance of major sins.” [5]

Some of the criteria we advise you to look for in order to assess whether a particular person should be regarded as a trustworthy and accepted scholar from whom to take knowledge of Deen are the following:

- He does not violate the laws of Sharī‘ah. For example, he does not attend events in which there is intermingling of sexes, he does not cut his beard short, he does not listen to music, he does not keep pictures of living things etc.

- He is a graduate of a reputable and accepted institute of Shar‘ī studies.

- He adheres to one of the four mazhabs of fiqh, namely, the mazhabs of Imam Abu Hanīfah, Imam Malik, Imam al-Shāfi‘ī and Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal.

- He has sound positions in ‘Aqīdah that are in accordance with what has been established by the scholars of Ahlus Sunnah, like Imam al-Tahāwī, Imam al-Nasafī and others.

- He is not a person of bid‘ah. That is, he does not hold any baseless religious beliefs, nor does he engage in any practical innovation in religion.

- He is recognised and approved by the ‘ulamā’ of Ahlus Sunnah wa l-Jamā‘ah, and those ‘ulamā’ who are moderate and known for their taqwā.

ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيكُم وَرَحمَةُٱللَّهِ وَ بَرَكَاتُه

I am confused on the point of innovation. Some people may do new things but state that we are doing this with believing it to be a Sunnah, what should one think of such people?

This might not be the bench mark, but it can be helpful in determining authenticity.
I mean that Hazrat Hakeem Akhtar RhA was sahihul Aqeeda, muttbi Sunnah and Kamil Waliullah, so a person who studied under him, covered sulook under him and is holding his Khilafah, major chances are that he will be authentic. Moulana Hakeem Akhtar RhA trusted him and gave him khilafah, so for a layman who don't have much hold on Quran and Hadees, should also trust him.

Nowadays it has become very easy. We don't need to judge the authenticity of each and every individual. Because
1. If you want some fatwa, you can ask institutions instead of individuals such as banori town, darul uloom karachi, darul uloom deoband etc.
2. If you want to listen to some bayans you can listen Mufti Taqis sahib db, Moulana Triq Jameel, Mufti Tariq Mas'ud and many others whose authenticity is well known without any doubt.
3. If you want to do your islah, you can do bai'at with someone very authentic like Sheikh Zulfiqar bd, Mufti Taqi db and many others. The key point here is that if many scholars head towards a Sheikh/Peer, this is enough for his authenticity. By this formula, many doubtful personalities like Sheikh akram awan, etc will be filtered out.

So if a person wants to stay safe, it is very easy for him. But if someone is always looking for adventures, then there is no cure for him.

Each to their own brother, but certainly not the bench mark I would use or for me.

Look at the likes of Maulana Ibrahim Mogra, a bury graduate who studied under top Ulema. Something surely went wrong there ....

The safety in this day and age is to stick with the consensus of the ulema, we live in funny/weird times and this is probably the safest way to go about things.

They have a mixture of erroneous beliefs, however it will vary between its scholars/graduates as to whether they hold those opinions or not, here's some issues to name on top of my head

1) Pro- modernism
2)music
3)hijab
4) Jafariyah being a fifth sect of Islam
5) beard

List goes on....

However not all scholars who have studied there turn out like this.
