Assalamua'laikum

I recently heard of a religious dude. One of our muslim brother approached him for help, as he was confident that he could help on that particular issue (even I know he could help). The religious dude told him that he would do istikhara and tell later. Next day the religious dude told to this needy person, I am sorry I can't help you on this.

I was like wow.. can we do istikhara and deny helping the needy ?

Bismillah.

Strange never heard of this before, I always presumed that one should help someone in need if they are able to and before helping that individual one should make their intention purely for the sake of Allah, and one should also express gratitude to Allah for giving them the Tawfiq to help someone who is in distress for it is a great blessing.

Helping Someone In Distress
By Shaykhul Hadeeth Muhammad Zakariyya

Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam has said:
"Allah Ta'ala loves the help given to people in adversity."

The point mentioned in the above Hadeeth is that Allah Ta'ala loves the help given to people in adversity. A Hadeeth says that Allah Ta'ala will show no mercy to those who do not show mercy to other people.

Another Hadeeth reports Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam as saying, "He who helps the women in their distress, or the poor, is like one who is engaged in jihaad."The narrator says he thinks that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam also added, "Like one who offers nafl salaah the whole night without slackening, and he is like one who is always fasting without break."One Hadeeth says that whoever removes any suffering of a Mu'min (believer) in this life, Allah Ta'ala will save him from the distress of the Day of Judgement; and Allah Ta'ala will grant relief, both in this life and in Aakhirah, to anyone who relieves someone's hardship. Whoever conceals the shortcomings of a Muslim in this life, Allah Ta'ala will save him from the exposure of his shortcomings both in this life and in the Aakhirah.

One Hadeeth says, "When someone fulfils the need of a Muslim brother, his reward will be like that of a person who spent his whole life in the service (worship) of Allah Ta'ala."Another Hadeeth says, "If someone places the need of a Muslim brother before a person in power, he will be helped to cross the 'siraat' (the bridge over Jahannam) when feet will slip on it."

According to a Hadeeth, there are a number of men whom Allah Ta'ala has created for the sole purpose of meeting people's needs and helping them in difficulties; those men shall have no worries on the Day of Judgement and will have nothing to fear. Another Hadeeth says that whoever helps his brother in distress, Allah Ta'ala will keep him steady and firm when even the mountains will not be able to stay firm in their places, i.e. on the Day of Qiyaamah (Doomsday). One Hadeeth says, "If someone helps a Muslim by saying a few words in his favour, or takes a few steps to help him in any manner, Allah Ta'ala bestows on him seventy three blessings, one out of which will suffice him for his well-being in this life and in the Akhirah, while the remaining seventy-two will be reserved for exalting his rank and the status on the Day of Judgement". Besides these, there are several Ahadeeth on this subject quoted by the author of Kanzul Ummaal.

A Hadeeth maintains that the Muslims, by being kind to each other, by their close relationship with each other and being merciful to one another, are like a single human body, of which when one limb suffers, all its other parts become restless and share its suffering. For example if one of the limbs get injured, all the other limbs become uneasy; if one hand gets hurt, all other limbs are restless and the whole body becomes feverish. Likewise, all the Muslims must feel disturbed over the difficulties of any one Muslim.

A Hadeeth says, "Rahman (Allah Ta'ala) shows mercy to those who are merciful to others. Be merciful to those on earth, you will have the mercy of those who are in Heaven," (which includes Allah Ta'ala and the Angels).

One Hadeeth says that the best Muslim home is the one in whch an orphan lives and gets fair treatment, while the worst home is the one in which an orphan lives and gets bad treatment. Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam has said, "Whoever in my Ummah helps someone in his need to make him happy, he makes me happy and my happiness makes Allah Ta'ala happy, and when Allah is happy He grants that person entry in Jannah."

One Hadeeth says, "When someone helps an afflicted person, he becomes entitled to seventy three grades of forgiveness, one of which is enough for his salvation; the remaining seventy two will raise his rank and positions in Aakhirah." A Hadeeth says that the whole creation is Allah's family, and from amongst mankind He likes those most whose behaviour is good towards His family. `The entire creation is Allah Ta'ala's family' is a well-known Hadeeth quoted by several Sahaabah radhiyallahu anhum.

The ulamaa have explained that, just as a man is responsible for the provision of all needs of his family, so does Allah Ta'ala provide for the whole of His creation, which, for that reason, is here called the family of Allah Ta'ala. In this regard the Muslims do not have any special status. Muslims and non-Muslims are all alike, even the animals come in the same category; every species in the creation is here included in the family of Allah Ta'ala. Whoever metes out good treatment to the whole creation will thus become the loved one of Allah Ta'ala.

Helping and supporting those in distress is a trait that is encouraged by Islam and a noble characteristic that is an implication of sincere brotherhood and chivalry.

The life and manners of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) present the finest example for every aspect of our life, especially in helping and supporting those in need or distress. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was known for this noble characteristic, even before receiving the divine message. When he received the revelation for the first time he went back to Khadeejah may Allaah be pleased with her and told her about what had happened to him, he added: “I feared that something might happen to me.” Khadeejah may Allaah be pleased with her said, “Never! By Allaah, Allaah will never fail you as you maintain the ties of kinship, speak the truth, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously, and assist deserving, calamity-afflicted people.”

Thus Khadeejah may Allaah be pleased with her deduced that Allaah would protect the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) because of his good deeds, including his keenness to help the distressed, as, after all, a person reaps what he sows.

In Islam, relieving others of their distress is considered a duty for those who can do so and a good deed towards which people should race. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Allaah helps whoever helps his brother.”` His words have become an axiom for Muslims.

Moreover the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) commanded Muslims to assist those in need and distress. When he forbade his Companions from sitting on roads unless they observed the rights of the road, he explained that these rights included helping those in distress and guiding the lost: Imaam Ahmad may Allaah have mercy upon him narrated on the authority of Al-Baraa’ ibn ‘Aazib may Allaah be pleased with him that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) passed by some people while they were sitting on the road and said to them: “If you have to sit there then guide the lost, return greetings and support the oppressed.”

Helping those in distress is a rewardable charity. In a Hadeeth on the authority of Abu Moosa Al-Ash‘ari may Allaah be pleased with him the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Giving charity is an obligation upon every Muslim.” He was asked, “O Messenger of Allaah, what about the one who does not find something to give?”' He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Let him work with his hands and give in charity.” He was asked, “What if he still does not find anything to give?” He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) replied: “Then let him assist those in need and in distress…”

A person who asks for help may be oppressed, helpless or distressed, and in all cases helping him and fulfilling his need is relief for his suffering. In return, Allaah The Almighty promises to relieve the distress of those who relieve others on the Day of Resurrection. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “If a person relieves a Muslim of his trouble, Allaah will relieve him of his troubles on the Day of Resurrection.”

I‘tikaaf, or ritual seclusion in the mosque, is a great act of worship and its reward is also great as a Muslim leaves everything behind for it and dedicates himself to worshipping Allaah The Almighty. However, the reward of the person who fulfills the need of others is greater than the one who performs I’tikaaf. In this regard, the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “It is better for the one who moves to fulfill his brother’s need to do so than to make I’tikaaf for ten years.”

Al-Hasan may Allaah be pleased with him once ordered Thaabit Al-Bunaani may Allaah have mercy upon him to go and fulfill the need of a certain man. Thaabit may Allaah have mercy upon him said, “But I am in the state of I’tikaaf.” Al-Hasan may Allaah be pleased with him said to him, “O foolish man! Do you not know that fulfilling the need of your brother is better for you than making I’tikaaf?”

Helping those in distress and fulfilling people’s needs indicates strong faith and sincere brotherhood. The chivalrous and magnanimous cannot endure seeing anyone in distress, and without any hesitation or delay they hurry to assist the distressed, voluntarily seeking the reward of Allaah The Almighty. Moosa (Moses) may Allaah exalt his mention the magnanimous and noble prophet of Allaah, escaped from the oppression of Pharaoh. He was tired and exhausted when he reached the well of Madyan, and there he found a crowd of men watering their flocks. He also found two women there who were waiting for the men to finish so that they could water their flocks too. Once he knew their need, he did not wait for them to ask him for help, rather he took the initiative and watered them for them. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):
And when he came to the well of Madyan, he found there a crowd of people watering [their flocks], and he found aside from them two women driving back [their flocks]. He said, “What is your circumstance?” They said, “We do not water until the shepherds dispatch [their flocks]; and our father is an old man.” So he watered [their flocks] for them; then he went back to the shade and said, “My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need.”
[Quran 28:23, 24]

This is the attitude of the chivalrous - they never hesitate when it comes to helping others and relieving the distressed.

Finally, helping those in need and supporting those in distress is a way of thanking and praising Allaah The Almighty for His blessings, and this causes the blessings of Allaah The Almighty to continue and increase, as the more blessings a person is granted, the more people need his help. Therefore, if a person praises Allaah The Almighty for His blessings, they will last and, vice versa.

We seek refuge with Allaah The Almighty against the cessation of His blessings, and may His blessings and peace be upon His Messenger sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) his family, his Companions and those who follow him.
