what if the brother is reading all this!

sister moonlight, maybe leave the questioning, make istikhara and see how your heart inclines? Also make abundant du'a for guidance and protection. May Allah ta'ala settle your heart on khayr and 'aafiyah

That's first thing I asked if he was brelwi, coz all the deen background information was like a jigsaw piece, he then said no way, Salaf saaliheen.

Is their any chance this brother is shafi'i as he claims?

Sister everything fits, it's just the deeni background that doesn't add up. Maybe I'm looking too much into it. My istikara is coming out positive because I think I'm feeling that way inclined anyway.

Lol if the brother is reading all this, he needs to come clean, or at least clear the doubts.

Ask him if he's read Reliance of the traveler and say that others have recommended it but you have your doubts. Its a top shafi book hated by salafi and read by all shafi.

If he's read it, ask him whats so good about it.

Yes you are right, I am feeling unrest for a reason, and that should be a sign in itself. Nothing fits with him or makes any sense.

Even after so much effort in identifying his deeni background I'm still clueless and something as simple as that shouldnt need to be such hardwork.

Jazakallah to all for the honest responses on here.

Sister, everyone knows Dr Zakir Naik. He openly claims to be a hanafi because of one of his statements, that is deceiving right.

Yes your right. In that case how can anyones word be taken. If people are willing to say anything for worldly gain how can we protect ourselves from such people.

Also for example if a person believes himself to be on haq with beliefs in the incorrect strain of the hanafi madhab how would we know.

Maybe he's an Azhari ? Ask him who are his scholars and who does he take his knowledge from for starters.

It is highly possible though, ask him his views on 'hijab', 'music' and most importantly the 'madhabs' then go in to the Imams and see what he has to say about them , also ask him his thoughts on the 'Jaffariyya sect' then go into the twelver Shias if you wish, you'll have to turn him around but it should give you a pretty good inclination as to who he is and what he follows and whether you should run a mile or not.

May Allah help you and make the truth crystal clear to you

It's strange that you mentioned two specific issues that threw me, he said Nikab wasn't compulsory but it was Taqwa, and he's ok listening to music, I just thought the music was a personal weakness and I didn't want to be judgemental.

As far as I'm concerned he's not marriage material, solely because I'm unable to identify his religious beliefs, and something so basic shouldnt be so difficult to identify, but I would like to know his true identity, because I'm now beginning to doubt his personal information.

He won't answer any questions regarding what he studied or who he follows, all his answers are pretty much general. It's difficult to get any specific information. Especially since mentioning to him i was hanafi.

First I wanted to confine myself to rating certain posts, but now the urge of contributing has become too big to refrain - especially since some suggestions (and maybe questions that you've asked the brother already) in my humble view are getting ridiculous. Don't become obsessed with subtle ways to find out if he's Salafi or not. Don't ask him about every difference of opinion since Sayyiduna Adam (alayhis salam). There's absolutely no need for that, if the matter is of such crucial nature to you then ask him straight forward, what is his opinion about those calling themselves Salafiyyah or call towards not following Madhhab.

If you don't want to take that route, then instead of differences of opinion look for blameworthy traits that Salafis are known for. For example calling Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari's verdicts a joke is simple disrespect towards scholars, no matter if Salafi or not at that point your Alarms should've went off already. Disrespect towards Ulama, feeling superior to Muslims with different understanding, being judgemental etc. these are traits we dislike the Salafiyyah for... look for signs of this nature instead of if the poor chap is praying 8 or 20 Rakat's Taraweeh. Wallahu 'Alam.

Sister, sometimes its ok to fib (sometimes) so just tell him you wanna come clean and you want to admit that you're actually salafi and you follow Shaykh Albani.

Learn the salafi lingo and add them to your vocabulary.

Tell him you find him and his opinion to be "Daeef" ask him for "Daleel" ask him what his "Manhaj" his. Say "wallahi"

Try it, let us now.

Do you blame her ? I don't, she has every right to ask as many questions as she wishes, marriage is not some joke or some bollywood movie where they sing song together and fall in love and live happily ever after..doesn't work like that unfortunatelt...it takes time to work on it, but before you even get involved one has to see whether they are compatible or not etc and one has to do their own due diligence which she is doing right now.

I'm not sure your aware of the damage caused by some of these marriage bandits...see thread below :
