Yet we aren't "earnest enough" so we will probably have to do a detour through Jahannum and enter Jannah with a tan.

I don't think you will find any narration on this and you have the details of the ulama who verify hadith anyway.

People in Jannah will be able to identify those who have come from Jahannum as they will be tanned. Allah protect us and save us from the hell-fire. Ameen.
