As-salam-u-'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,
fellow Muslims, Alhamdulillah I found a shop selling a cross bow at a reasonable price of about US $100 (insha'Allah will bargain) [PKR 10000]

It has 2 arrows (not sure), a fiber glass bow with 125lb strength.

Do you think it is a reasonable price?

Additional info.: I had done some research of online markets, but as the archery stuff is rare in my city or too expensive if available, I have few options.

Jazakumullahu khairan.

My intention isn't to kill : )
Just want to try and practice the sport, and insha'Allah gain mastery over it.

I know you won't do that insha Allaah.

If you want to attain mastery, why not attain it in shooting instead? It will bring you massive reward if done with an intention of training for J!had.

Actually, buying a gun may have complications, my father said something about toy guns too. Since they are mostly used in dukayti(looting), just by showing, not even using).

Albeit, I repeat my original question.

Forgive me for meddling in your query. However I suggest you first to ask a Mufti to know whether it'll be extravagance or not.

Please insha Allaah share the opinion of Mufti sahab here.

Reasons why I'm interrupting are-

- Although mentioned in Hadith, but archery has been replaced by shooting in modern warfare, therefore mastery in it will bring no benefit in terms of fighting.

- It can't be considered as an exercise, so no benefit for health.

- If it's for hunting purpose then shooting is much more effective.

- In this age of firearms it can't be considered as a weapon for security.

Bismillahi Ta'ala,

I cannot give any advice about the science and field of archery itself, hence my response is limited to the shar'i perspective.

a. Archery will remain a sunnah. Even in the presence of phasers in future Star Trek times.
b. It is like miswak has its benefits both spiritual and physical. The physical benefits may be attained otherwise as well, but the spiritual benefits attached specifically to miswak will remain with it.
c. Another example would be knowing that you have wear something to cover your privates. A lungi is masnoon. That fa'li sunnah reward which you will get by wearing a lungi, will not be achieved by fulfiling a qawli sunnah of wearing pajama/shalwar etc.
d. Hence, learn archery, swimming, horse riding, running etc.

BTW, with the logic being used, do you think we should start learning nascar driving because riding is replaced by driving...

Also, for archery being obselete, has anyone read about the Speed Archery? Besides, keeping fire arms can be very problematic in the west, regardles of right to bear arms.

Since you are starting off, find some basic bows and practice with them. Do not make it a choice like those tennis enthusiasts who just because Wimbledon is going on get a graphite racket ... and it remains in the corner.

Rather learn the science of it.. from bottom up. Perhaps for now use the same money and get someone to teach you the basics. Keep the good intention and May Allah assist you. Ameen.
