UK PM 'concerned' over Muslim schools row

Last updated: 08 Jun 2014

David Cameron, the UK prime minister, is "deeply concerned" about allegations that "Islamic extremists" have been plotting to take over UK schools.

Cameron made the remarks on Saturday evening, following a week of infighting between senior government ministers and months of reports that Muslim-majority schools in the city of Birmingham were being infiltrated by religious conservatives to make them adhere to a strict interpretation of Islam.

Michael Gove, UK education secretary, will present findings from the government's investigations on Monday, the same day that Ofsted, the education watchdog for England, publishes its report into the Trojan Horse controversy.

A statement from Downing Street said: "The prime minister has been deeply concerned by the allegations made about extremism and a number of Birmingham schools.

"The government has taken swift action to investigate these allegations since they emerged in late 2013. The prime minister is taking a specific interest in ensuring this serious matter is being dealt with effectively."

The statement added: "The prime minister has made clear that he expects a robust response from all relevant organisations to any findings that confirm that the safety and learning of children in our schools have been put at risk.

"The prime minister has prioritised fighting all forms of extremism, including through setting up his Extremism Taskforce in the wake of the horrific killing of Lee Rigby."

Park View Educational Trust, which runs one of the schools under scrutiny, has criticised Ofsted for its handling of the matter.

It said last Thursday that inspections of Golden Hillock were conducted in a climate created by the "Trojan Horse" letter and "unproven" allegations in media reports. "This led to unprecedented lines of enquiry from Ofsted based on proving the imposition of strict Islamic practices at Trust schools- such as segregation of boys and girls, forcing of wearing headscarves, promotion of homophobic or racist views. Golden Hillock's Ofsted report finds absolutely no evidence of these practices."

The Trojan Horse letter, discovered in March, was said to be from Muslims wanting to take control of schools in Birmingham by complaining about their leadership with accusations of forced Christian prayer and mixed physical education. (Al Jazeera)

These individuals want to keep us stupid and dumb without culture and deen, education and manners. All these cabinet ministers know the education system is seriously messed up therefore send their children to private schools but Muslims must be prevented from progressing in every way. When the principle of democracy works in favour of the muslim nation and we vote in school governors who express the views of the majority then there is a big hooha. This double standard is practiced across the board.

UK pupils 'risk radicalisation and extremism'

Last updated: 09 Jun 2014

UK school inspectors say there is a "culture of fear and intimidation'' at several British schools investigated over allegations of a plot by Muslim "extremists" to run them along strict Islamic lines.

The Ofsted education watchdog said on Monday that five of 21 schools it inspected in the city of Birmingham failed to protect pupils from the risk of "radicalisation and extremism".

A summary of the report by the chief schools inspector, Michael Wilshaw, stated: "A culture of fear and intimidation has developed. Some headteachers reported that there has been an organised campaign to target certain schools in Birmingham in order to alter their character and ethos.

"Birmingham City Council has failed to support a number of schools in their efforts to keep pupils safe from the potential risks of radicalisation and extremism.

"It has not dealt adequately with complaints from headteachers about the conduct of governors."

The inspectors recommended that authorities should "further investigate whether there has been organised infiltration and manipulation of governing bodies".

The inspections were spurred by an anonymous letter alleging a plot called "Operation Trojan Horse" by radical Muslims to infiltrate Birmingham schools.

Authorities believe the letter was a hoax, but the alleged plot inflamed tensions in Britain's second-largest city.

The Park View Educational Trust, which runs several of the schools, insisted they "do not tolerate or promote extremism".

David Cameron, the British prime minister, earlier on Monday promised a "robust response" to allegations of "Islamic extremism" in schools.

In a statement he said: "Protecting our children is one of the first duties of government and that is why the issue of alleged Islamist extremism in Birmingham schools demands a robust response." (Al Jazeera)

السلام عليكم

What about those strict Catholic schools? Aren't they 'extreme' enough for them?
Double standards.

One of the articles I read yesterday was an unbias report, stating all faith schools had an ethos of teaching according to their own understanding and beliefs....but from what I've understood these schools are not Islamic schools but mainstream government schools.

Has anyone noticed Cameron attacked Islam by the term "Islamist extremism"?

If he meant insurgency/militancy then he would use the term "terrorism", which is commonly used.

If extremism means encouraging Muslim children to follow Islamic rules properly, then Christians are practising much more extremism.

His statement MUST be condemned.

I have always wondered why the Muslims in UK never founded their own political party? It is not like that Deobandi Ulama are unfamiliar with politics especially those who are close to the circle of Ml. Husain Ahmad Madani and other political figures?

I'm not to sure as to how that would exactly work, unfortunately when our lot get a little bit of power it gets to their heads, just look at the state of mosque committees worldwide, a lot of them are in a complete mess.

Do you really think they are fit to govern and look out for the affairs of others in one way or another ?

I don't think so, but that's just my observation so far.

This post has been reported. It could be due to breaking rules or something as simple as bad use of bbcodes which breaks the page format. We will attend to this soon.

Bro Ansari muslims in the UK make up around 3-4% of the population. A political party is of no use. There are however a number of Muslim politicians across the various political parties. Mostly they are useless individuals when it comes to our national issues though some maybe useful for local issues. What is needed is a single voice for the muslim community. Currently we have all sorts of idiots representing us. The problem with this 'single voice' is that it could be used against muslims. i.e. There was some strategy of getting all masjids to do the same jumahs inline with the arab tawagheet who write the script for the imam etc. There is also the issue of the various groups not accepting a person from another group etc. All in all the situation is very complex. Our enemies are many and we are pretty weak. The media seems to be a bigger problem than the government.
