My belief and your belief matters little. What you need is to prove is the need for a "Shaykh" and if you say that its upto my beliefs then you are saying that its "optional" therefore we don't need to be looking for anyone...

What is it? Optional or Requirement? For a person who is following the Deen, in touch with Ulama etc

I hardly recall ever asking my shaykh a fiqhi ruling. Once I told him that I was persuing ghunyat ut talibeen by shaykh gilani rh and he said that I should not take fiqhi rulings from the book but refer to fiqh book for such matters.

The shaikh according to your criteria would be similar to this. What would your reaction be if he tells you not to wear jeans and shirts (you is not specific I dont know if you wear or not)

Actually the point here is not about did Islam start in 1866 India. This is a very unfair question, and it is flawed because it does not address the argument of London786.

London786's argument was sound, and it went as follows:

1. Muadh Khan has respect for Imam Rabbani, Sayyid Ahmad Shaheed, Shah Waliyullah, Shah Ismail Shaheed, Mawlana Qasim Nanotwi etc

2. All of these great Revivers (mujaddid) had a deep and profound attachment to a Shaykh, such that it can be concluded that their drive for the Khidmat of Deen was from this source.

3. Therefore, you should also respect the great need of developing a connection with a Shaykh, since such great luminaries as these also felt an insatiable need to keep the company of their Shaykh.

Therefore, as you can see from the above reasoning, the question about India and 1866 is flawed.

Furthermore, Muadh Khan was asked about the above, but a diversionary question about defining "Big Ulama" and a question about "India 1866" was brought forward. I wonder if Muadh Khan will accept the reasoning as stated above.

I cannot think of a single of the akabireen of deoband who did not have a shaykh? Please name me one from the elders. Let us take the elders of the UK and even amongst them most will have a shaykh.

Come on guys be reasonable. Lets not go into the discussion that if a shaykh is needed or not. I think everybody in this thread know that there were great ulema who didn't have any shaykh and there were great ulema who did have a shaykh. So that discussion is pretty much futile.

I think the more pressing issue is what the OP mentioned regarding the cult mentality that exists in our Ummah today. Be it following a shaykh or following a particular ulema, people are often going to the extreme that they reject other shaykh/ulema/groups that are on haqq.

I have said this before:
If a Muslim jumps up if his shaykh is criticized but doesn't bat an eyelid if another alim is criticized, then he is showing extremism.
Similarly if Deobandi only takes the effort to defend only Deobandi Akabir and does not show the same enthusiasm to defend Non-Deobandi ulema then he is an extremist.
Same for a person following a Particular Madhab and so on.


We are people who love to form their own 'exclusive clubs'. It looks so 'cool' from the outside. Unfortunately its a disease that people are unaware of.
