Sahih International: O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, disperse without seeking to remain for conversation. Indeed, that [behavior] was troubling the Prophet, and he is shy of [dismissing] you. But Allah is not shy of the truth. And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And it is not [conceivable or lawful] for you to harm the Messenger of Allah or to marry his wives after him, ever. Indeed, that would be in the sight of Allah an enormity.

I was wondering if this ayah would also apply by extension to the Ahlul Bhayt (RA)? I don't mean his wives, but his other family members like Fatima (RA) and Zainab's (RA) family were who were alive at the time?

Check ayah no: 55 and Also the Tafseer in Maariful Quran.
It is mentioned in Maariful Quran
that the rule is for 'guests'. And its not only applicable to the vistors of Rasoolullah (saw) but also all Muslims in General.

So, it also applied to other family members (RA)?

Hmmm, interesting.

From Ayah no: 55, what I understood was it doesn't apply to family members. Can you please refer the tafseer. Bit busy at the moment. Will post screenshots if you don't have pdf of Maariful Quran.

Sheikh Mumtaz-ul-Haq always interprets this as Sahabas (RA) being forbidden with possible exceptions.

I'm sure general visitors were accompanied by the Prophet (SAW) in his mosque.

If you read the tafseer posted above, you will notice this is not exactly a blanket prohibition. But rather it has 3 rules.
1. Entry only with permission.
2. When invited for a meal, do not arrive early.
3. After meals, do not stay back for a long time.

Also in the 55th ayah it is mentioned that it is not applicable to Fathers, Brothers, nephews, Muslim women and slave women.

Edit: I think what you mentioned is true, that the Prophet (saw) usually met visitors in the Mosque.

Wallahu alam.

Yeah, it doesn't apply to his family members as Fatima (RA) and Ali (RA) would visit Rasoolullah (SAW) regularly.

May Allah bless the Sahabas (RA) and the Ahlul Bhayt (RA).
