Brunei is to become the first East Asian country to adopt Sharia law as the sultan confirmed the Islamic penal code on Wednesday. The move sparks broad concern over the rights of women and minorities.

Sharia law will be implemented nationwide starting Thursday.

"Today... I place my faith in and am grateful to Allah the almighty to announce that tomorrow, Thursday May 1, 2014, will see the enforcement of Sharia law phase one, to be followed by the other phases," Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah said in a speech, AFP reports.

A brave move, masha'Allah. May Allah protect them from the evil forces that will break lose on them now. I guess to expect support from other Muslim countries to counter the criticism is unfortunately in vain.

Hudood would almost be secondary to this as there are many conditions in place and ikhtilaaf on the issues. Intereestingly people like hamza karmali of sunnipath etc claim that hudood should not be implemented as it will automatically alarm the kuffar. He even used a fiqhi princople for this. I would not go that far however as what is mentioned in the quraan there can be no doubt. khair these kind of decisions would need to made by the ulema of haqq.

Brunei won't become Madina overnight so people need to give it time. The very fact that they are even discussing Shariah in this day and age of huge scrutiny is a major step forward.

Shariah law is not easy and it also means that most criminals will be pardoned because in Shariah every conceivable advantage is given to ward off punishments (by doubts).

How true I don't know but perhaps someone else can confirm Insha'Ala

I was speaking to a friend last night and he mentioned one of the first few things the Sultan will make compulsory will be :

-Salah
-Hijab
-beard ( I can't remember if this was mentioned or not )
- Islamic punishment on those that have children outside of wedlock

These things will be started of with and the rest will be implemented as well slowly slowly. On a side note I also hear the Sultan has a brother who is a bit dodgy, so lets see.

To the best of my knowledge this will be first Shaf'ae based Shariah system after centuries. Generally we have had Hanafi based law predominantly in the world.
